“Average place to stay”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 November 2011

This is not my first experience with Fairmont Hotels and with all the respect that i have for this chane, i have to say that it was not what i was expecting from a chain like this.

I stayed at this resort the first week of november/11 , my stay in general was fine, The place looks nice from outside (its all a Castle/Chateau) as its names describe it. Very well located with magnificent views.

I found the Lobby small compare to other Fairmonts which can get a little bit tight during the check in and check out process. Rooms are very spacious , clean as usual but, the one that i was assigned is close by the meeting rooms on an upper floor. haven said that , apparently they were holding that saturday night a wedding party or a kind of even that Disco music was very loud after 10pm disturbing my stay. it did not last the whole night ,but the music bass was strong. Also the sink was clogged and of course you never expect that at a Hotel of this caliber. I didn't focused on those things since i was willing to optimize my stay no matter what and i did not want to make a case of these things.

Resuming, very centrally located, withing walking distance from the Parliament Hill (just 5 min), about 8 minutes walk from the Alexandra bridge , shopping center just across the street, local marked place , clubs, pubs , etc. It is a good place to stay when visiting Ottawa for your first time.

Hope this review helps you out to make up your mind.

First let me start by saying, I love the exterior look of this hotel and was excited at the thought of staying here again..it's been years....but sadly so far...not so good for me...the room is tired...not that clean..and cleaning staff are stressed out squabbling with each other out in the halls...I could look past that but ordered rooms service put on hold for several minutes...and then asking what kind of herbal teas they had....clearly the attendant has no idea what constitutes an herbal tea...and after an hour + called back to find out where my order was...total confusion...had no idea if my order was even coming and went to bed...decided I better call one last time..and the lady said yes your order is one the way up with some truffles as an apology..By this time it was 9:40 and I said please dont bother..I am going to bed...if the order was on my way up ther person should have been at my door by then..

Next day 7:30 and dry cleaning not in my room...had to call to find out where it was...yes they brought it up..but I wonder if I would not have called what would have happened...

Dear General Manager....please be aware of what is going on in your property...you have problems...one does not expect this at a Fairmont Hotel...

The Chateau Laurier is located in the heart of Ottawa....everything you want to visit is within walking distance. The Parliament buildings the market place etc..if you want to visit the capital of Canada with class, and with your family or on a romantic interlude.. and no worries then this is the place!

The hotel itself is in the Fairmont chain therefore has a high standard of which this hotel does not disappoint. The building itself is historic and that feeling seeps wonderfully through. The feel is British Canadian and totally amazing right down to the last stone. You know from the first step in that you are in a special place...and your room will complete that historic feel. Depending what side of the hotel you are in... you will also hear the hourly chimes from the parliament buildings which are actuallly soothing and so special! Welcome to Canada! you are that close.

The service is acceptable. The rooms are exceptionnaly clean...and the decor is historic and romantic. The service desk was helpfull as I had a problem with connecting to internet and they resolved asap.

The breakfast can be included in your price (highly recommend)...the buffet is great with an excellent selection so I would recommend this option. The chef who does your omellets etc. is amazing and a sincere touch. He made our day :)..hopefully he'll be there if you visit

The evening resto itself is excellent but is expensive. We totally enjoyed our meal and it was 5 star.. however we chose to walk to other great restaurants within minutes walk on other nites mainly because of the price and because there was so much happening outside.

This is a perfect hotel if you are a tourist and don't want to go wrong. Its also the perfect hotel for romance!

This is THE hotel in Ottawa. If you want to visit Canada's capital and are not sure where to go, then go here...you will be very happy with your choice.

I have stayed in almost all the Fairmont across the country and I must say that this one was a bit of a disappointment. The rooms are not all that clean and feel musty and dusty.
The food is fine but not good enough for the price and the reputation of the establishment...

If you ever decide to go to Ottawa for the Remembrance Day ceremonies then this would be the only hotel you would consider staying at - especially since the Canadian War Memorial is right across the street! If you were going to see the Parliament Buildings of Canada you again couldn't pick a better hotel - they are truly right next door!

That however would not be the only reason you would want to stay in this hotel. To start with the hotel is about to celebrate it's 100Th year next year. Built between 1909 and 1912 as a luxury hotel it still holds up exceptionally well today.

The hotel itself is one of the most impressive buildings in Ottawa - and considering it it next door to the Parliament buildings of Canada this is no small feat! Just driving up to this building makes you think about days gone by when hotels were beautiful and only the very fortunate of society would get to stay in a hotel like this one.

To be sure staying here is not a cheap date, if you are looking for a cheap date then one of the more modern chain hotels would be where you should stay. However, the cost is more than worth it if you want to stay in a hotel that is beautiful, reeks of history and dare I say charm!
Right from the time you walk in you will be impressed, the lobby is beautiful with lots of cozy seating areas, the architecture is beautiful and clearly the hotel has been well cared for. In fact the entire hotel is like that - beautiful and well maintained.

The room that we stayed in was a Fairmont King Standard - and was nicely appointed - big screen TV, couch/coffee table seating area, desk and very comfortable bed - nothing to complain about unless you wanted to get picky about decor (which was fine) or something else personal taste related. Most importantly it was clean and bright!

The bathroom was more than serviceable BUT the lighting was less then serviceable - especially for women who wish to put on makeup. I am told that an extra mirror (of the type that is on a telescoping arm) would be a great addition. I suspect it was a throwback to earlier days in having the soap dishes jutting out from wall in the shower BUT we both hit them while taking a shower - twice! So even though the bathrooms have been clearly updated they need a "freshening" to better lighting and less obtrusive soap dishes.

The service that we experienced was what you would expect of a first class hotel - everyone we dealt with was professional, helpful and friendly - whether or not they were in a position to be tipped. You expect good service when you go to any hotel - sadly you don't always get it - but you most certainly do here!

As a general rule I do not eat in hotels - I generally find that the food is overpriced and mediocre. This is NOT the case with the restaurant (Wilfreds) - so much so I will review it separately.

Would we stay there again? Absolutely in fact we are going back in the winter to skate on the Rideau Canal - the hotel is again perfectly situated at the start of the worlds longest skating rink - we look forward to both the skating and staying at this hotel again and have no problem recommending it - some things are worth the price of admission - this was definitely one of them for my money!

Room Tip: It really doesn't matter about the view - you can pay extra for a room with a view but given whe...

Thank you so much for posting your comments regarding your Fairmont Château Laurier experience, especially as it relates to Remembrance Day.

This is a unique location and we are truly honoured to have hundreds of Veterans choose to spend their afternoon in the Hotel following the ceremony, which takes place in front of Ottawa’s castle.

We look forward to welcoming you during the upcoming winter season as you have noted in your comments.

Sincerely,

Stayed here recently on business. Service from the time you check in is always outstanding. The hotel is adjacent to the Byward market and down the hill from Pariament. They just don't build them like this anymore. From the grand lobby, to the architectural details in the ceiling, to the classic overall design, its always a pleasure to stay here. Although the rooms and some of the common areas are in the need of a refresh, the rooms have been upgraded with flat screen tv's and ipod ready bedside radios. Sit in Zoe's for a drink or a meal, you just never know who will come walking in. Great ambience.
