Another must see in Ottawa. This time we were lucky in that there was a full show with canons, and various bands.

I was out for a morning walk on a short Saturday visit to Ottawa and happened upon a crowd gathering around the large grassed parade ground in front of the Parliament Buildings. Luckily my curiosity led me to investigate and at 10:00 am the Changing of the Guard ceremony began with the entrance of a superbly uniformed and disciplined band of bagpipers. They were soon followed by a much larger marching brass band and several large groups of soldiers in spectacular scarlet uniforms and large fur hats. The bands and soldiers marched down the field and formed up in ranks, then the bands played several tunes. The exchange of guards took place, the bands and soldiers formed up again and marched out of the grounds while the bands played and they exited down the city streets. This all took approximately 45 minutes. Very impressive display and it helps that I also love pipe bands.

This event is very exciting at the beginning and the end when the Ceremonial Guard marches in. There is a marching band and bagpipes. The long and somewhat boring part is the middle section as the troops are "inspected". We enjoyed being on the east side of the lawn for the ceremony because we had a great view as the guard marched in and out. If your feet get tired, consider sitting on the Parliament steps.

Very cool to witness. Amazing how the guards can stand so still in the heat of summer. Historical and very much a cool sight to see.

We missed the Buckingham Palace England guard changing ceremony in England so we decided to watch the Canadian version in Ottawa. We enjoyed seeing this brief traditional ceremony and parade which added to the beauty of the location at the magnificent Parliament buildings. We had great views but you have to arrive early if you want to get free tickets to tour Parliament and also see the changing ceremony too. Interesting cultural attraction for kids, particularly since we don't have this in U.S.and the marching band with bagpipes is a treat.
