“A must see by the Rideau Canal!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 August 2014

The arboretum is has a unique location- Dow's lake, The Ornamental Gardens are all at walking distances. It runs along the Rideau Canal with the beautiful bike paths. I visit there frequently. But the one in last fall was memorable. If you want to experience the fall colours come here. Needless to say, you can easily spend a couple hours in admiring the environment and strolling along the paths.

“Beautiful trees”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 August 2014

We had our wedding photos, engagement photos and photos of our young daughter taken at the farm. It's a beautiful place for a stroll or bike ride along the water with so many large trees.

“A jewel in the urban landscape”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 July 2014

Think towering trees, shaded rock gardens, rows of lilac trees, peony, rose, daylily-iris, and perennial flower beds, a milking barn, sheep, and patchwork fields of research crops and you`ll have a snapshot of the Central Experimental Farm. A national historic site, the Farm offers a quiet oasis in the midst of Ottawa`s urban landscape. We often walk through the Arboretum, which features over 2,000 trees and shrubs scattered over 86 acres. In the Arboretum there is a lookout from where you can catch a glimpse of boats sailing on Dows Lake, a series of working locks along the Rideau River, and the campus of Carleton University. The spectacular flower gardens - a delight for gardener and non-gardener alike - cover 8 acres. Weekdays from May to October you will usually encounter a group of volunteers from the Friends of the Central Experimental Farm helping to maintain the gardens. The volunteers, mostly retired Ottawans who love gardening or have a long, personal connection to the Farm and who work under supervision of Farm staff, are vital to helping preserve the Ornamental Gardens. Although my husband and I find it a great destination for a solo walk, it`s also popular with families, and is a perennial favourite for wedding photograph. We often take out-of-town guests to the Farm, who are always amazed to find such a lovely spot in the middle of the city. The Agriculture Museum features many family-oriented activities which introduce children to Farm animals and various facets of Farm life. Admission to the Arboretum and Ornamental Gardens is free. There is a fee or parking and for admission to the Museum.

“Worth visiting at any time of the year”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2014

The arboretum extends from the Federal Experimental Farm to the Rideau river and is bisected by the Prince of Wales Drive that runs north south. A very large area of all types of trees set in parkland.

The Federal Experimental Farm extends over hundreds of acres of fields used for trialling crops etc; the area for animal research and husbandry is relatively small and comprises around four large buildings and some paddocks. There are cattle, horses, pigs, sheep and goats from various imported and native breeds who are looked after very well. There is plenty of information about each animal and the staff lead school groups. There is an entry fee you and car parking is free. Educational and enjoyable.

“Nice place on a hot day”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 July 2014

The Arboretum is across the road from Experimentall flower gardens. I hate to admit to a bit of ignorance!!! My wife and I walked across the street and wandered around this parkland setting looking for the arboretum building. Only after reading a few signs on trees did we realize that the whole area was the arboretum!!!
There are at least 2 parking areas. One of the parking lots overlooks Dow Lake. This is a nice quiet, cool place to wander around on a hot summer day
