“Nice family campground”
Reviewed 7 May 2013

I am a single mother who has been camping with my 3 daughters for 12 yrs now at least twice a year for a week at a time...we have always had a great time..we camp in tents and the lots are huge unless you get along the sides or in the back...we have never had. Now that my daughters are older there really isnt much for them to do..maybe they should put some things in for the teenagers to do. Most of the staff and seasonals are friendly and helpful..we will continue camping there unless they raise the prices

We recently took a RV trip to Niagara Falls with another couple. Along the way we stayed 2 nights at Shalamar on the Lake Campground. Granted we are novices, with a rented RV, but it wasn't bad at all.

We didn't spend a lot of time at the campground. What's around Shalamar is what you should see. Niagara-on-the-Lake is a very special place. It's beautiful. We did the wine tours, walked the town. Niagara Falls is unbelievable. The restaurants are wonderful. Shops are great. The casinos are fun. Lots to do for all ages.

The staff at Shalamar was friendly, the hookups were easy (15 amp with sewer and water), it's right between Niagara-on-the-Lake and Niagara Falls. The campsite does have big shade trees. It was easy to get to. Campsite has staff at the entrance gate 24 hours.

It was the only RV campground near both Niagara-on-the-Lake and Niagara Falls. Location, location, location. As another reviewer said, it's not very private. If your looking for true "camping" or camping with a wilderness feel, this isn't it. If your tent camping, don't expect this to be a pristine wilderness experience -- it's a RV campground for goodness sake. But again, we weren't here for the campground, but the sites nearby.

Yes, there are "seasonal campers", maybe locals, but that wasn't a problem at all. Had to pay a pound for a shower, but oh well. Also, had to pay the deposit, but we got it back. Also, it is near wineries and yes they shoot "cannons" to scare away the birds (not booming cannons, but more like shots). But again, it wasn't a problem for us. Never woke us up. Hey, it's in wine country. When in Rome do as the Romans.

Lots of bad reviews for the Shalamar, but we thought it was fine.

Camped with our 4 and 7 yr old and we all had a blast. Camped on a 15amp site with water and sewer in a motor home. What made the trip..........honestly our trailers and family. Shalamar is an okay to good campground. The sites are not private if that is what you are looking for but the older sites do have big trees and our site was a good size. (Parallell parked a 30' motor home on the site) It felt like we had a big front yard when parked the way we did but the tenters behind us I bet felt like a little house beside an apartment building with no privacy. The huge very clean pool was great and really a big draw for us. With a depth of 4'6" at its deepest in the middle, great fun, refreshing and a short walk to our site and back. Snack bar well.......the fries were good. Typical chip truck menu and it passed. The sanck shace and well everything else meeds massive updating!!! The playground is asking for a lawsuit, as much of it looked very unsafe for any age child. The "center stage" where a few good acts can be heard on the weekend really needs some investment and TLC. Same really with much of the other buldings around the grounds. We did not use the washroom (spoiled us, private washroom in the motorhome) so i cannot grade them but the key deposit of $20 still stands. Another key to this place is its proximaty to Niagara on the Lake. About a 30-45minute bike ride along great scenic trails. All in all, we will be back but besides the pool, it is not the amenities that make it for us. If anyone from the campground happens to read this........time to upgrade to keep the regulars and get new regulars.

We are an extended family from Denmark travelling with three kids under 7 years of age and two retirees. We have visited this camping site twice now while visiting the Falls and Niagara Parks in general, and we are extremely pleased and satisfied with the camping ground and the people there (working as well as 'residents'). If you talk to them, they will talk to you - no problem - and they are very friendly, polite and always ready to help.

The site is very good for the children, as there are many play things on the playground, and the pool is perfect for children. The only thing I could wish for is a bit of shade around the playground - we have had extremely good weather during both our visits, and it can be just a bit too much in full sun on the playground, but this is a minor thing.

During summer, there are many activities for both children and adults, and the shop has just about all you can possible need in an emergency. Of course, it is a little expensive compared to a large shop in town, but in Denmark, this is the rule, and it is no surprise. Those small shops cannot buy in bulk, and thus they have to get their supplies at a much higher price than the supermarkets.

A family has complained on this site about the claim made by the camping site that you could walk to a winery in about only 20 minutes. The familiy says this is a lie, but I know for a fact, that this is true. Driving back from Niagara on the Lake, we stopped at a Ice Winery, and I decided to walk the rest of the way back to the camping site with my daughter of 7 years and my mother of 66 years. We had the most beautiful and calm walk back, and it only took about 15-20 minutes.

The washrooms were worn, but very clean and not smelly. The deposit for the key is quite understandable, since it does cost both time and money to replace a lost key. I don't care, as long as I get my money back, when I return the key.

Of course, the noise from the cannons may be a bit annoying, but this camping site is not situated in a city, and in the rural areas you must expect farming noises.

The camping site is beautifully placed and not pricy at all. The short distance to the Falls (less than 30 minutes) is perfect, and Niagara on the Lake is very close by as well.
If you want to see the sites, but you don't want all the fuzz of the nights in the Niagara Falls hotel area, you should really give this camping site a shot.

A good trick is to rent a trailer, where you can cook some of your own meals, either inside or on the gas barbecue outside. It is less expensive, and it is very relaxing.

went to shalamar twice within a month, the first time it was ok,, i was shocked that we had to pay 20 deposit for the washroom, never heard of that before, campsites were ok, typical campground, pool was beautiful, the store very very expensive so don't forget anything when packing or your going to have pay big time , it's close to the border so it worked for us, and we decided to go back the second time,, and last time!!!.. the cannon noise was driving us crazy, it was going on within the late hours of the night and start again early morning, not impressed, we could have stayed at the falls for less than what we paid for those sites, we used three sites should be some sort of discount , if you have a visitor drop by the part for a couple of hours advise them ahead its going to cost, we had two people come by for a couple of hours and it cost 24.00.. we won't go back again,, sorry.. love the pool but thats about it!!

If you tent, keep driving. The postage-stamp sized tenting lots are along the back of the campground and many are highly exposed to the sun. That's bearable but every five minutes (literally!) during daylight hours simulated shotgun sounds are heard from the neighbouring orchard. These blast are designed to keep birds/critters away but they start at around 6 am. Not amusing.
This is mainly an old folks park with a large percentage of seasonal campers. Tenters are seen as transients and get treated as such. No one talks to you unless you're going above 5 kph through the park and then there's a chorus of "slow down" or "go slower" like 10 kph is too speedy.
As another reviewer said, the washrooms were reasonably clean but the urinals were down in the men's washroom for most of the August long weekend.
The staff was mostly friendly and the regular night-time patrols provide a measure of safety. The pool is large but we didn't use it. We just cycled along the Niagara Parkway and tried to spend as little time there as possible.
We will never camp at Shalamar again.

The park was small with some great facilities - clean bathroom (you need a key and deposit $20), clean pool, great convenience store with Wi-fi access. It is actually nice to go for a walk outside of the campground by pear and peach orchard or grape vines. There is a farmers market around the corner as well. They had good music at night and entertainment for the crowd.

The camping ground was clean and relatively quiet but there were canon sound thought the time we were there. I believe these are air canon to scare the birds away. Poor privacy as it seem like park that was divided for camping and RVs.

The gate staff was friendly and accommodating.

When we entered the there was a fire ban and we were concerned how we are going to cook the food as we didn't bring propane or bbq. The fire ban was lifted… they sell firewood on site ($11.50) bit pricy and they also have a snack bar (hot dog, hamburger, ice cream etc.).

It was family friendly campsite and alcohol was allowed. Since it had some permanent trailers there it seem much like a community/resort area.

we made an expereince out of it but mostly will not return.

Room Tip: if you are using a tent stay around the camp site, if you chose the middle you'll have no privac...
