We came here this fall to check out the biking trails. Not only were the trails great, but we loved the lodge. I don't think they get much business outside of the winter season, but once people start discovering the trails for hiking and biking, that will change. We were the only people staying there at the time and the main lodge was closed, but the owner gave us a tour. We stayed in the Peter Kalm chalet and it was very nice and clean. I would love to come back in the winter!

Molly and I have had our eyes focused on the other end of Lake Superior for quite a while. This year we finally had the opportunity to visit Stokely Creek Lodge and ski the Wabos Loppet for the first time. We could not have asked for a more perfect time. The cross-country ski trails were a Winter Wonderland of freshly groomed new snow, and the staff always had a smile on their face. The food was good and plentiful, and you are also allowed to bring your own wine to Stokely.

Although you can stay at the lodge and "keep to yourself". The emphasis at Stokely is fellowship. Tables can be reserved for meals, but most people enjoy meeting new friends, and your experience will be enhanced if you are open to mingling. Jamie, the manager, even played his guitar one night and led almost 20 of us in a sing-a-long (it helps to like classic music from the 60's, 70's and 80's). Quiet time starts at 10 pm in the lodge, which is a good thing as everyone is tired from skiing and snowshoeing. Quite time was never abused by any guests.

The highlight of our trip was the Wabos Loppet. The focus on this 25 km ski event is fellowship, not racing. The Algoma Central Railroad takes you 45 miles north out of Sault St. Marie where one stops in the middle on nowhere for the ski back to Stokely. The lodge provides a bus to the train station. My only loppet advice is don't even think about trying to use your skate skis. This is a classic only event. The trail is narrow, and for the first 15 km you will not have a skate deck. Make sure you enjoy the tea and oranges both a Norm's Cabin, and at the creek aide station. Here is a animated musical slide show I made of the Loppet.

Room Tip: We stayed in the lodge, not one of the cabins. The rooms were small and clean, but you will need to share a bathroom with other guests. We enjoyed the fact that we could always walk upstairs to our room, but some guests might enjoy the privacy of a cabin.

We visited Stokely regularly for 10 years with our children until 2006 when our grandchildren arrived. This time we introduced it to our friends. Both couples were impressed with the quality of the XC-skiing and the friendliness of the resort and the guests. The post New Year crowd were all of an age but so are we. We are planning to be back next year.

Room Tip: The lodge rooms don't have ensuite bathrooms but are very convenient to diningroom and the 24 hour beverage counter.

Stokely Creek is not only a great place to ski, it's a great place to relax, to eat, and to meet interesting people. There are about 120 km of ski trails of all skill levels over varied terrain and beautiful countryside. Even with a lot of people staying at the Lodge, once you get out on the trails you're likely not to see anyone for hours on end. There are also about 20 km of snowshoe trails, which provide a quiet and challenging way to see the area. You can both ski and snowshoe to the platform on King Mountain for a spectacular view of the Lake Superior, Michigan, and northwest Ontario. Truly breathtaking.

The Lodge is charming and comfortable. I found the staff to be exceptionally helpful, friendly and ready to provide assistance whenever I needed it. I had one minor issue with my room my first night, and they immediately upgraded me to another room at the same price. The owners are gregarious and hospitable. The first day, the owner offered to take me out on a tour for a couple hours, and then took a small group of us up on the snowshoe trails on my second day. One of the best things about Stokely is the communal atmosphere, so it's very different than just staying in a hotel or at a resort. You make friends around the fire, over wine and cheese, and at meals. The food is good and plentiful, and it's great to come in off the trails and have an abundance of hot food waiting for you.

This was my first visit. Nearly everyone I'd met there had been there before, and many had been coming every year for decades. Stokely clearly has a faithful following, and now having been there, I'm sure I'll be going back!

Room Tip: The Lodge rooms are the most convenient, as they are in the same building as the dining room, sitting rooms, rec room, and saunas. There area a number of detached cabins at varying walking distances from the Lodge, offering a variety of price options.

We last cross country skied at Stokely Creek years ago, when it had different owners. We loved it then for the great scenery, beautiful trails, friendly staff, and excellent food. Now it's even better because they've gotten new bedding and put more art in bedrooms and common rooms. There's now a clubhouse where lodging guests meet each evening for appetizers.

They've added new trails, warming huts, and snowshoe trails and rentals. If you've never snowshoed before, start out on the creekside trail that borders a winding, burbling stream. After burning off calories outdoors, you can relax in one of two co-ed saunas. You can also book a regular or hot stones massage.

Staying in the main lodge has the advantage of being in the same building as the dining room, community rooms, rec room, and one sauna. The disadvantage is that it can be a bit noisier than if you stay in one of the chalets.
