“Would Look Elsewhere on Next Trip”
Reviewed 15 August 2010

The note in the hotel room read “The hotel is a designated Heritage Building and as such has definite character and quirks.” The “character and quirks” would be fine if we had paid half the price. However, for our triple room we paid over $200.00 with the taxes and this room is not worth anywhere near that. While we realize this is “in-season,” the hotel’s lack of space and modern facilities were a disappointment. In reading other reviews, I would tend to believe that some of the other rooms in the hotel must be much nicer than ours. It should also be noted that while in the downtown area and very close to the Avon Theatre, the hotel was a good mile walk to the Festival Theatre. The breakfast at Joe’s Diner across the street was a delight.

A gem in the heart of Stratford - walking distance to all thre Theatres. (Festival, Avon & Tom Patterson) minutes from picturesque Avon River & it's swans-surrounded by interesting restaurants. Rooms have old world charm but enough modern conveniences to be comfortable. As a female travelling alone, the deadlock bolt system made me feel very safe. Friendly helpful staff - Have already recommended the hotel to family & friends & will be back myself

Desk staff couldn't be nicer or more helpful. The location is perfect - so close to the Avon theatre, shopping and dining. Free parking too. Breakfast voucher for the diner next door is an unexpected treat. But our "suite" was shabby, and at times, not even adequate. No one mans the desk between 9 pm and 9 am, so when the toilet overflowed and the air conditioning broke, there was nothing to do but wait until morning. (Ordinarily, the air might not have been a problem, but Ontario was experiencing an unusually bad heat wave.) Room doors are thin and don't completely close, so from your bed you hear every sound from the corridor outside. Everything in Stratford is expensive during high season, but for $159/night, I expected to be able to shower without wearing shoes.

Thank you for your comments. I am glad you were happy with the staff, service and our many amenities. Our Guests find our location convenient, as we are close to the Avon Theatre, Studio Theatre, world class restaurants and specialty shopping. As well, we are a 15-20 minute walk to the Festival Theatre via the picturesque Avon River.

We are truly sorry for any concerns over the unfortunate timing of fixture maintenance. Like so many other small inn’s, our 12 room heritage hotel has limited desk hours. Our rates are comparably one of the lowest in the downtown core, and our desk hours are a way to keep our rates down. Should a guest need assistance after desk hours, guest key cards are furnished with emergency numbers for just such circumstances.

Thank you again for your comment and we look forward to seeing you in the future.

My husband and I recently spent our anniversary, July 1st at this hotel. After looking at on-line reviews I specifically chose this hotel because of its old-world charm. It's more than 130 years old with very pleasant and comfortable updates. Centrally-located within walking distance to the waterfront, threatres, shops and restaurants. Our stay included an air-conditioned suite which included breakfast at a restaurant down the street. We also had a golf package which was a great value. We wanted to stay another night but the hotel was all booked up. Suzanne at the front desk found us another hotel at a comprable price with breakfast at the last minute and provided us with many great tips and things to do, making reservations for dinner and dessert the next day when we were no longer her guests. She showed us how to get a free city parking pass and her cheerful and accommodating service made us feel very much at home. Old-world charm at a great price even in high season.

We came to Stratford to see several plays at the Shakespeare Festival. The Stratford Hotel is excellently located within a short walk of the downtown shopping district and all of the festival theatres. The staff of the hotel was very well informed about the city and the festival activities. The allowance for breakfast at a nearby restaurant provided a meal which was very filling and of excellent quality. We will definitely plan on staying at the Stratford Hotel for next year's visit to the festival.

I am always on the lookout for inexpensive places to stay in Stratford, Ontario, while the Stratford Festival is on. I prefer to put my money into theatre tickets rather than accommodation. This year I tried the Stratford Hotel, which is in a very interesting old building, and the price was right (about $80 for the pre-summer season). I was able to walk to the Tom Patterson and Avon Theatres (you could walk to the Festival if you wanted, about 15-20 minutes) and leave my car at the hotel. Apparently during the summer months they also serve breakfast in a basement breakfast room - this was not available when I was there as the full theatre season was not underway. For convenience and price, I would stay there again. Note: as the building is old, the floors do creak, but this just added to the atmosphere!

The hotel's website gives a pretty accurate impression of its accommodations and amenities. As in many Victorian Inns there is the usual proliferation of decorative pillows ( which end up tossed on the floor) but there is also a small refrigerator and an effective air conditioner which effectively masks any street noise. It is charmingly furnished.
The dead-bolt key arrangement makes certain that guests do not lock themselves out (important when there is nobody on duty at night, though emergency numbers are furnished). It would be good to have in-room coffee makers but the breakfast voucher bought a nice fresh meal in the nearby diner .
The staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. Taxis were ordered, airport rides reserved, excellent suggestions made for nearby dining. Suggestions for how the rooms might be improved were welcomed.
