“Wonderful weekend in Stratford at the Stewart House Inn”
Reviewed 20 June 2008

We just got back from a Father's Day weekend stay at the Stewart House Inn in Stratford, and what a treat it was! We were greeted by Marc, our affable and gracious host, along with his beloved doggies, Essex and York. Marc made us feel right at home, showing us the main rooms, and helping with our luggage up to the cozy Carolina Suite. He offered suggestions for dining, how to obtain last minute tickets for the theater, gave directions on how to walk to the city center .... he was a knowledgeable and friendly host!
The property has air conditioning, and beautiful grounds, with a heated, salt water pool. They have an automatic coffee machine that is capable of producing just about any kind of coffee drink you would want - latte, espresso, macchiato .... and there are always cookies, cake and fruit out for the late night nibbles. Service at breakfast is outstanding, with visually pleasing presentation of the food, and delicious offerings, such as asparagus quiche, peameal bacon and fruit. Oh yes, I almost forgot the coffee and tea service in the morning, delivered directly to your room by use of the butlers' buttons in each suite, with Marc responding with your morning beverage, accompanied by your cream, sugar, milk, whatever you requested when you first arrived. I would highly recommend that Trip Advisor members book their next stay in Stratford at this outstanding B&B!

What a great property - and what a great proprietor. Marc is clearly at the top of the small property/B&B game - just the right touches to make for an outstanding weekend away. Great food, great room, beautiful common areas - truly nothing to complain about (other than the weather... but then if Marc could control that he probably would be doing something else for a living...).

We've stayed in many properties - large and small - in many parts of the world and I'd put Stewart House Inn in the top echelon. Thanks again to Marc, his wife and sister for a great stay.

We seriously thought about selling our apt in NYC and never leaving! We spent a wintery evening at the Inn for our anniversary, and Marc, Lynn, Mary could not have been more gracious and welcoming. When after a very long drive from Chicago we got there to discover all the restaurants in town closed for Boxing Day, they threw open the fridge and made us a delightful anniversary dinner. The atmosphere is charming (they take holiday decorating seriously!), service impecable, and overall, we couldn't recommend it more highly.

We are Stratford theater junkies, having attended the Festival regularly since the late 1970's. Where we have stayed was, for me, always trumped by arranging a preferred theater schedule and reserving our dining choices. Our accommodations needed to be "comfortable" but I desired little more. The pampering that we have received at the Stewart House during the past three summers has altered all that and where we stay has become an integral, anticipated and treasured part of our annual Stratford experience. Our stays at the Stewart House are generally a full week long giving the Inn and its staff every opportunity to show its warts. Remarkably, there simply are none. This place is simply perfect!

Marc Armstrong (and spouse Lynn Logie) are delightful hosts from the time that one makes "first contact" through the warm sendoff at the end of your visit. No effort at assuring your comfort and facilitating your stay goes unvisited. There is nothing that they will not assist with. The Inn's property is spacious, truly "private," wonderfully landscaped and immaculate throughout. Each of the Inn's rooms has its own unique charms and all have been completely renovated and refurnished during the three seasons of Marc's ownership. The pool area (which was under-utilized under the Inn's previous management) is now a wonderful and welcoming area for relaxation, rest, recovery and, on most of the days of our stays, a fabulous breakfast prepared by Marc's sister and resident chef Mary. (The breakfast is always fabulous--it's just indoors when necessary!) Other family members include the resident "kids" at the Inn, schnauzers York and Essex. They are delightful friends who make your stay even more welcoming, particularly if you volunteer some treats every now and then. (This year, we attended their birthday party poolside and, I should note, Marc encourages all guests to use the area for picnic dining and/or evening libations.) Rounding out the crew, wonderful and warm breakfast and room servicing are provided by Aimee and Brenda and even, at times, by Marc's nephews John and Tom.

If all this makes the Stewart House sound like an extended family operation where the guests are brought into the fold during their stay, that it truly is. Conversation flows freely between guests and all of the staff, and one of the treats of the week is always chatting and sharing a glass of wine with Marc. I particularly enjoy the silver tray in-room coffee (and warm scone) service prior to breakfast (and, if you like, your coffee delivery can be accompanied by two "accent" dogs as well) and returning to our room after our evening play to a turned down bed with the Inn's bathrobe spread out in wait, some Perrier, fruit, candy and, a welcoming note, weather forecast and...who knows what else? Nothing surprises me any more. Any time during the day, (or night), there is access to coffee and various coffee/tea drinks from an automatic machine and there are always Mary's wonderful cookies (especially the ginger!) or other "munchies" in well located "public" spaces.

I could go on (and on) but the bottom line is that the Stewart House Inn is a remarkable place. I have never stayed at a more accomodating, friendly, pampering, luxurious, relaxed or relaxing small hotel, B@B or Inn. I can't imagine that such a place even exists!

My daughter and I make an annual trip to Stratford each summer to see some plays. We had stayed in the same B & B for about the past five years and decided to try something new. After an internet search, we found The Stewart House. We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay.

The proprietor, Marc Armstrong, could not have been more helpful. He spent quite awhile with me on the phone when I booked our stay, going over our likes and dislikes and suggesting restaurants we might enjoy while we were visiting. He made dinner reservations for us well in advance of our arrival, making sure that he worked around our theatre commitments.

My daughter and I usually try to stay in a room with two beds or at least a king bed. Marc did not have any accomodations available that fit that description, so he very graciously reserved two rooms for us for the price of one.

The Inn is located a few blocks away from the bustling downtown area. The neighborhood is quiet and lined with stately old homes. We loved the beauty of the area. Car and pedestrian traffic was minimal. All but the heartiest of theatre goers would want to drive to their theatre destination, rather than walk, as it would be a bit of a hike to walk from even the Avon after an evening performance.

The Inn is beautifully appointed. It is clear that it is well cared for and the owners take great pride in it. The rooms all looked like they were newly decorated, each room having a unique theme which was perfectly articulated and the common rooms having an elegant, yet inviting, atmosphere.

Breakfasts were delicious and the staff tried very hard to accomodate dietary and taste preferences. We enjoyed eating out by the pool on the days when the weather permitted. Beverages and snacks were available throughout the day. We also loved ringing the buzzer in our rooms for early morning beverage service which was delivered to us before we went down to breakfast each day.

The grounds of the Stewart House Inn are lovely and very private. There was no street noise. We relaxed by the pool and took a very refreshing swim. It is not often that you find a B & B that has a pool and a lovely patio surrounding it. For two swimmers, that was a huge plus.

Marc was very helpful at the end of our visit also. We wanted to take a side trip on our way back home to visit Bayfield and Goderich. He printed off several versions of the routes we could take off Mapquest for us.

Last, but not least, we have to mention two staff members of the Stewart House who provide quiet, yet indispensable, service. They are York and Essex, two miniature Schnauzers. Missing our own two dogs whom we had to leave at home, we were delighted to be greeted by these friendly and well-behaved hoteliers. It made the Inn all the more friendly and inviting.

We will certainly return to the Stewart House Inn again and again and can't wait for summer, 2008.

I just finished my third stay of a week at the Stewart House Inn in Stratford, Ontario. It is a perfect B&B--informal, yet elegant. The owner and his staff go to great lengths to make sure you enjoy both the Inn itself and the town and theater. The accommodations are excellent in every way. The leisurely breakfasts get the day off to a perfect start. The location is a plus: close enough to walk to the theaters and many of the fine restaurants in town, yet in a very quiet residential neighborhood on spacious and beautiful grounds. I have tried to think what the owner and staff could do to make the experience even better. I simply can think of nothing; they think of it first and act on it.

I visited Stewart House last year when it first opened and was absolutely thrilled with the gem I had uncovered in Stratford! I made a special trip to Stratford this year JUST to have the pleasure of staying there again and I was, of course, not disappointed. Staying at Stewart House is just a delightful experience from beginning to end -- from Marc (the owner)'s family-like welcome to the beautifully designed rooms to Mary's superb cooking (we are vegans and she went to such trouble to accomodate us!) to the sophisticated, but relaxed atmosphere. All the rooms are equally lovely and decorated in a distinct style. The saltwater pool is a delight. Their DVD and CD collection a fab bonus.

Stewart House is definitely one of the BEST B&B's around...period.
