Arrival: Pleasant enough desk staff, but gave little information about the hotel.
Room: There were no staff at the desk, possibly in the hotel, from 8:00 pm to 8:00 am.

The room had a queen size bed, dilapidated furniture and less than 12 inches between the bed and the walls, and the bed and the dresser at the end. It had no headboard. The view from the window was a crumbling brick wall about 2-3 feet way. There was little room to move, let alone get changed comfortably. The walls were rotten as was the ceiling. There were gaps between the floor and walls the. window frame was rotten and coming away from the wall.
However, the worst feature was the bathroom: There was urine around the toilet from previous guests, the floor tiles were cracked and damaged. The sink and bath taps were difficult to turn off, and the sink was slow to drain. The sink and bath drains were rusty. In the morning we advised the desk staff about the urine in the bathroom. She said "Sorry, I'll let housekeeping know." and frankly, it felt insincere.

We decided to stay here after booking tickets for Mother Courage (a great, thought provoking show.) The room was booked through Expedia. The price was quite reasonable for a room in Stratford at this time of the year. The location of this place is great. It is one block from the main shopping district.

I agree with some of the other reviews. It is 'maze-like" but it is an old building and not a modern hotel. The lobby was updated. We were greeted promptly and the staff was very professional and courteous. The beds were quite comfortable but the room itself needed work. The paint was peeling off of one of the walls and the carpet and furnishings were old. The cleanliness was just adequate. One of my biggest "must haves" are faucets that provide warm water. This place had individual hot and cold spigots so you'd have to cup your hands under the cold then the hot one so that you would not burn yourself.

Hopefully they will continue the renovation into the rooms themselves, fix the walls, replace the old carpet and furnishings. They also need to work with their cleaning staff to scrub down the bathrooms and clean the grout so that the room are unquestionably clean.

When you read the Web site you expect to stay in on if 34 classically styles rooms. This is the start of the lies. We arrived and our room keys were in a mail box with all the other guest keys. No staff working at 8pm. Just take the right keys and go to your room. Walk in and bam.... Disgusting. Water damaged room filthy dirty. Stained walls furniture. Seriously the most disgusting room I have ever be given. Thermostat duct taped off. Filthy. This hotel is zero stars.... Never stay here.

The marketing says just renovated. Beautiful lobby but that's where it stops. Halls are dark, dingy, with stained ceilings and fluorescent light. Our room was at the end of a maze and absolutely the worst. Old soap left in the bathtub. Bugs on the floor. The room pictures at the top of these reviews say it all. Despite the great location, Just stay someplace else.

We booked a single night on expedia.ca and paid about $100 plus $9 for parking to attend the Stratford festival. The hotel's recent renovations mainly appear to be the addition of an elevator and paint. The rooms have a 1950's feel to them; the bathroom fixtures and tile would be comfortable in your grandmother's house. A thermostat in the room was covered in duct tape but the HVAC unit worked fine. The bed was a little soft but comfortable. In-room coffee/tea service is provided. There is a restaurant next door which we did not try but we did go to 'Features' (Waterloo St) for a great breakfast, Pazzo's Pizzeria (also excellent) and The Church for a group lunch (very disappointing). Main likes for the Albert St. Inn: superb central location, friendly/helpful front desk staff; and good value. Main dislikes: dated bathroom, no WiFi in room (does not reach beyond lobby), some street noise and drapes did not block light in the morning.

Room Tip: Poor-fitting drapes (did not block morning light) may not be a problem in every room. Check first.

The only real positive thing to say about the Albert Street Inn was the proximity to the party we were attending the one night we stayed over. There isn't anything that can be done about the age of the hotel, so perhaps the creaky floors, tiny bathrooms, archaic plumbing and paper thin walls are to be expected, but the lack of any staff after 8:00 PM seemed poor given the amount charged. It was only a one night stay and it served its purpose, but if I come to Stratford again, I will definitely stay somewhere else.

It's NOT ritzy with endless amenities (no room-service, Wi-Fi, wet bars, etc.). It IS a decent, clean, place to get a comfortable night's sleep at a reasonable rate after a long day at the festival. It’s an old building, with all the quirks of one. I found it quaint, perhaps even charming, for my 3 night stay.

I read the reviews but gave it shot anyway. Don't be tempted by the "great location" tags--yes, it's great, but everything in Stratford is an easy walk from just about anywhere. I kept my expectations in check and was pleasantly surprised. Desk staff were friendly and helpful. At check-in, you get a front-door key, since the desk isn’t manned after 8:00 pm. Odd, since all the night shows begin at 8:00 pm. It didn’t pose a problem--just remember your key! I reserved parking for my stay (there are 8 spots, so reserve when booking). They only give out as many dash-slips as they have spots, so in theory, you’re guaranteed a spot. Since I didn’t move my car, this wasn’t an issue. However, one night (from my room overlooking the lot), I did witness someone (presumably with a slip) resort to moving a dumpster because all spots were taken. So beware.

I had a room on the 2nd-and-a-half floor--very quirky. This means another 8 or so stairs up from the 2nd floor--with no elevator access, so beware if stairs pose a problem. Everything creeks or rattles. You will hear everything from neighbouring rooms, hallways, and even out on the street. Décor was from another time period and pretty much resembled the pictures on this site. The room was clean, and adequately furnished: clean carpet, queen bed but no headboard (comfortable mattress, clean sheets & slight but harmless stains on comforter), desk, easy chair, and small tube-TV. Windows don't open. I didn't need the window A/C but it's poorly sealed and will be drafty in winter. Darkening curtains worked well. The little closet had hangers from dry cleaners and department stores. The tiny bathroom was clean, but uncomfortable. The sink had hot/cold taps on either end, and while the water was warm, the showerhead was installed so low, I had to squat to wet my hair (and I'm not tall). Towels were plentiful but pitifully cheap. Housekeeping did a fine job cleaning and replacing towels daily.

The adjoining restaurant "Let them Eat Cake" is a good place for breakfast. Your patience will be tried, but the staff is friendly and the food great. Hotel guests save 10%.

I needed a clean, reasonable place to sleep, not much else, and the Inn met my needs well. I might try a different place next time, but would stay here again without hesitation. It may not be for everyone--I’d recommend it to solo travellers and couples, but not to families, the elderly, or people with special needs.

Room Tip: If stairs are a problem, be sure to ask for a floor with direct elevator access. Some rooms require...
