“Basic hotel, great location, friendly staff”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 July 2014

We recently stayed here to go see a play at Stratford. I had read some of the negative reviews but the location was too good to pass.
Glad I did. It is not fancy or recently updated .
The room is not large but had a bed, bathroom, tv AC. It was clean.
I would stay here again. We parked the car, which is a $9.00 charge. If you want a spot I suggest you call ahead, and ask them to hold on for you as they only and 8 or 9 spots. We did this and there was no problem.
We then walked to restaurants, shops and the theatre.
Staff was friendly and helpful. The little restaurant was great for breakfast.

Room Tip: We were in a king room, 211. It was fine. I think there were bigger rooms but it suited our needs.

Goodness! Such a terrible title. We stayed at the "otherwise pretty darn OK" Albert St. Inn during the bumpy change in ownership. Of course, it was during the fire alarm that we learned of the change. The employees leave at 8:00pm (we were told this at check-in). "What could go wrong?" we thought smugly. Things got a little dicey when, during the fire alarm, we called the Emergency Number posted clearly at Reception. The number connected us to the former owner. The real owner/staff showed up 2 hours later (the alarm keeps going off until a key that only the owner has is used to turn it off). No smoke, no fire, but if you have mobility issues, repeat to yourself "there is no elevator service in event of a fire." Oh, and the phones in the rooms don't work (you find this out only by reading the small notice left UNDER the phone that the phone system was fried by a lightening strike). If you aren't killed in your room, it is comforting to note the great location.

Room Tip: Some rooms are on "half-floors" meaning they cannot be accessed by an elevator. Take the...

Arrival: Pleasant enough desk staff, but gave little information about the hotel.
Room: There were no staff at the desk, possibly in the hotel, from 8:00 pm to 8:00 am.

The room had a queen size bed, dilapidated furniture and less than 12 inches between the bed and the walls, and the bed and the dresser at the end. It had no headboard. The view from the window was a crumbling brick wall about 2-3 feet way. There was little room to move, let alone get changed comfortably. The walls were rotten as was the ceiling. There were gaps between the floor and walls the. window frame was rotten and coming away from the wall.
However, the worst feature was the bathroom: There was urine around the toilet from previous guests, the floor tiles were cracked and damaged. The sink and bath taps were difficult to turn off, and the sink was slow to drain. The sink and bath drains were rusty. In the morning we advised the desk staff about the urine in the bathroom. She said "Sorry, I'll let housekeeping know." and frankly, it felt insincere.

We decided to stay here after booking tickets for Mother Courage (a great, thought provoking show.) The room was booked through Expedia. The price was quite reasonable for a room in Stratford at this time of the year. The location of this place is great. It is one block from the main shopping district.

I agree with some of the other reviews. It is 'maze-like" but it is an old building and not a modern hotel. The lobby was updated. We were greeted promptly and the staff was very professional and courteous. The beds were quite comfortable but the room itself needed work. The paint was peeling off of one of the walls and the carpet and furnishings were old. The cleanliness was just adequate. One of my biggest "must haves" are faucets that provide warm water. This place had individual hot and cold spigots so you'd have to cup your hands under the cold then the hot one so that you would not burn yourself.

Hopefully they will continue the renovation into the rooms themselves, fix the walls, replace the old carpet and furnishings. They also need to work with their cleaning staff to scrub down the bathrooms and clean the grout so that the room are unquestionably clean.

When you read the Web site you expect to stay in on if 34 classically styles rooms. This is the start of the lies. We arrived and our room keys were in a mail box with all the other guest keys. No staff working at 8pm. Just take the right keys and go to your room. Walk in and bam.... Disgusting. Water damaged room filthy dirty. Stained walls furniture. Seriously the most disgusting room I have ever be given. Thermostat duct taped off. Filthy. This hotel is zero stars.... Never stay here.

The marketing says just renovated. Beautiful lobby but that's where it stops. Halls are dark, dingy, with stained ceilings and fluorescent light. Our room was at the end of a maze and absolutely the worst. Old soap left in the bathtub. Bugs on the floor. The room pictures at the top of these reviews say it all. Despite the great location, Just stay someplace else.

We booked a single night on expedia.ca and paid about $100 plus $9 for parking to attend the Stratford festival. The hotel's recent renovations mainly appear to be the addition of an elevator and paint. The rooms have a 1950's feel to them; the bathroom fixtures and tile would be comfortable in your grandmother's house. A thermostat in the room was covered in duct tape but the HVAC unit worked fine. The bed was a little soft but comfortable. In-room coffee/tea service is provided. There is a restaurant next door which we did not try but we did go to 'Features' (Waterloo St) for a great breakfast, Pazzo's Pizzeria (also excellent) and The Church for a group lunch (very disappointing). Main likes for the Albert St. Inn: superb central location, friendly/helpful front desk staff; and good value. Main dislikes: dated bathroom, no WiFi in room (does not reach beyond lobby), some street noise and drapes did not block light in the morning.

Room Tip: Poor-fitting drapes (did not block morning light) may not be a problem in every room. Check first.
