Based on previous reviews, we stayed here over a long weekend and completely enjoyed the experience. The hotel staff was informative on where to eat, what to see, etc. Our room was "L" shaped, not very large but very quiet and comfortable and had a nice size bathroom. We had free WiFi access and our car barely left the lot as we were within walking distance to EVERYTHING. Yes, the Festival theatre is a 20 minute walk from the hotel, however it is along the river and could not be a more beautiful way to go to and from the theatre. But everything else such as the restaurants and shops were right up the hill from the hotel. I definately would stay here again.

The Parlour combines historic charm with the amenities you expect at a reliable chain like Best Western. But there is nothing cookie cutter or chain-like about it. The exterior of the hotel is brick and looks like an historic pub with rooms above it. But in the renovation they also managed to fit in at least one banquet/conference room, and a business center and gym on the lower level. The restaurant is very popular with people who aren't staying at the hotel, which is a good sign of its appeal. We ate there twice, once from the fine dining menu (pea soup with truffle oil and goat cheese crouton, grilled salmon with carrot coulis) and once from the informal side (burgers and fish and chips). Both were very good.

Our room was in the older, but renovated, part of the hotel. Both the check in clerk and the guy who helped with our bags seemed excited that we had Room 207, which turned out to be a little suite, with the bedroom and small living room divided by a double sided fireplace. Unfortunately the fireplace could not be turned completely off and had a small pilot light burning at all time that warmed up the room, which had to be countered with the air conditioning. Since the air conditioner was in the living room, that space became almost too cold to sit in when the bedroom was at a comfortable temperature. Another quirky feature of the room, to me, was that there was a sliding class window/door between the bathtub and the bedroom. A shower curtain could be drawn for privacy, but that didn't block the light, so if one person was sleeping the other could not turn on the light in the bathroom. Seems like a design flaw! But the room was very clean, the bed was great, everything was in good repair, and you could tell that the hotel was trying hard to supply all the things people might want or expect, such as robes, hair dryer, a fridge in the room, wine glasses (the liquor store is right across the street, btw), and nice toiletries. There was very little space for setting down luggage or one's own bathroom items. It was an adorable room but not a very practical one. Nonetheless, we would stay there again, but try to get a more conventional laid out room, at least in the summer, when there is no need for a fireplace. A big plus for us was free and easy to use wireless internet.

As for location vis a vis the Shakespeare festival, The Parlour is just a block or so south of the Avon theater. We walked to the other theaters as well, but be warned it is probably a 25 minute walk to the Festival theater. The hotel location is good for restaurants and downtown shopping. There is also an appealing looking spa right next door (the exterior is blah brick, but the inside was welcoming and fragrant!).

"Best Western" properties have never impressed us much, especially in the U.S., but we received a welcome surprise at the BW Parlour in Stratford Ontario, which is traditionally lacking in upscale hotel accommodations.
We paid $179 CAN to stay in Room 204.

The good stuff:
- excellent room with upscale furnishings, flat screen TV (although not a High-Definition picture), nice single-cup coffee brewer with operating instructions!!!
- wired internet was reasonably fast and free.
- great bed, very quiet surroundings.
- excellent pub and restaurant on main floor (we ate there and it was very good quality, with excellent service from staff - a recurring theme)
- convenient elevators and parking
- CLEAN!
- very accommodating staff from the front desk experience all the way through checkout and everything in-between. This is no accident....must be a great training program and good staff/management relations at this place.

Opportunities for improvement

- parking was unavailable when we checked in since there was an event occurring in the conference room and the lot was packed. The lot was fine later that evening and the next day though so this might have been an anomaly.
- wireless internet was slow (less than 1 MB/sec.)
All in all, we were impressed by this place and will likely stay again, even without theatre tickets since there is much of interest just in the area surrounding this hotel.

Our lovely room was greatly appreciated as we were in most of our first evening and welcomed other couples that came the next day. We were all so impressed with the decor. The room was kept up exceptionally well by the maid. I would love to have the whereabouts of where to purchase a chair like the one in our room.

I have stayed here twice now and plan on returning whenever in the Ontario area. This historic hotel is plush with great style and brand new everything. The rooms are quaint and freshly remodeled, with large beds Victorian style furniture and lamps, ceramic tile bathrooms that are spacious and warm, large showers, great internet that is easy to use and has no problems.

A great place, and in the off season, or winter months, it is only 99.00 CND per night! Quite a deal for what you get.

Now the second best part of this hotel that just puts it over the top in my opinion is the fantastic Irish Pub and restaurant that is located on the first floor of the hotel. Over 10 great beers on tap including some great Irish brews like Kilkenny, Harps, Guinness, a couple of local brews and some others like Moosehead, Molson, and Bud. The food also was wonderful.

All in all, a top notch business hotel with everything you need and a lot that you don't!

We stayed here for one night in order to see a play at the Festival Theatre. The hotel is attached to an old pub. Part of the building is quite old, and the rest is new, but constructed to look old in order to match the original building.

Our room was beautiful. It had a very high ceiling, and elegant furnishings. Our daughter was thrilled to find several old books on a shelf, which kept her busy reading. The bathroom was huge, with a large, oval-shaped jacuzzi tub. There were lots of toiletries provided as well. Instead of the standard 4-cup coffee maker, there was a very interesting coffeemaker that looked like it could make several types of coffee, although we didn't get a chance to try it out. The beds were cushy and comfortable.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. We didn't eat in the pub, but it smelled good! There is a business centre in the basement, with lots of privacy.

We would defintely stay here again.
