“Comfortable ambiance and lovely service.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 June 2014

My partner and I had a very enjoyable dinner here on a Saturday evening with great service. Each staff member we encountered was pleasant and not at all pretentious. In fact, they were incredibly accommodating and sweet natured. The courses were well paced, and the food was creative and delicious. They even "topped up" my glass of wine. I didn't know that was a thing! But, surely, I enjoyed it.

Katie300600,

Thank you for your review. Our service staff works hard to welcome guests with charm and without pretension. Being a theatre town we recognize the importance of creating a dinner for our guests while being cognizant of their other commitments and we are glad that you found the pacing appropriate. We are glad that you enjoyed our new model of wine service - one that allows the guest to try the wine before they commit to an entire glass. We also often stagger the pouring of the glass so that white wines remain cold and red wines can be appreciated for their bouquet...without ever letting the glass go empty of course! We look forward to welcoming you back to the prune on your next visit to Stratford.

Regards,

Prune Management Team

“Bravo!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 June 2014 via mobile

I have been critical of The Prune in previous posts, mainly due to service but rarely the food. Last night's experience puts all doubts to rest that The Prune is back. The new menu and pricing were well received. We had the asparagus soup and roasted beet salad as starts and black cod and albacore tuna as mains. We finished with dark chocolate ice cream with berries and local cheeses. The timing of the service was flawless and friendly and we enjoyed a conversation with Joel, the front of the house manager. "Grandma's rolls" and the butter tarts with sea salt finale were scrumptious. What a great value for the price. We will be back!

Kevin T,

Thank you for your comments, they reassure us that the changes we have committed to are having a positive impact on our guest's experience. We are very proud of the menu our kitchen team has created and think that our pricing structure is reflective while providing excellent value. "Grandma's rolls" and the butter tarts are often devoured without inhibition by both our guests and staff alike! We at the Prune are committed to maintaining high standards in both food and service and look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit to Stratford.

Many Thanks,

“Just plain weird and way overpriced!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 June 2014

We ate here one night after seeing a matinee (King Lear - fantastic) with some friends. On the plus side - my poached salmon was delicious and the aspargus soup tasty. My husband enjoyed his steak (although presented in sliced up way) but found his beet salad 'odd' - on a skewer. The servers were very attentive and nice and at one point we had one attendant to each of us - a bit too much of a 'good' thing.

Having described the positives, all four of us were very disappointed in the portion size, the price (two dishes for fifty dollars a person and the portions were truly - as noted by other reviewers - TINY) - and there was a general weirdness to the menu. The 'chef' is obviously trying to impress with outlandish combinations and wording on the menu - example: our friend chose ice-cream which actually came with sweet peas! My husband who loves chocolate ordered the only chocolate item which was chocolate ice cream dipped in hard dark chocolate (so far okay) and then embellished with beer froth and some yucky fruity kind of jam - really? How about just some good old fashioned creamy first class ice cream and perhaps a biscotti? Or is that just too 'pedestrian' for this pompous menu?!!!

If you enjoy indulging a chef in his/her artistic fantasies at the expense of portion and taste - if you are adventurous in the land of weird and wacky combos - where the waiter has to spend ten minutes explaining everything - then you will love The Prune. And you will certainly pay for the privilege. If you are looking for a delicious and fulfilling elegant - yet with a touch of 'normal' meal, then perhaps you should try elsewhere.

“Good to Visit an Old Friend after an Extended Absence”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 June 2014

After not eating at The Prune for about five years my wife and I ate there this past week with another couple. It's better than we remember it. The kitchen is fantastic, but what was greatly improved was the front of the house. On other visits the service, while professional, came with a bit of an attitude. Not now. From the moment you enter you are treated as guests by people who not only know food and how to present it, but enjoy what they're doing and that so adds to the experience.

We highly recommend The Prune as wonderful place to dine either before or after the theatre. It's an elegant, but informal, evening with people who know how to operate a very good restaurant.

“fabulous dining”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 June 2014

a lost reservation didn't upset me too much as I was given a very nice table looking out over the garden. Menu choices were enticing, I had already perused the menu from their web site before making my selection of this establishment. Although for the most part I was content, what I was a little dismayed with was the quality of service from one waiter, was it because I was a lone woman ? I tipped handsomely regardless. Bathroom is in the basement. I would consider a return visit.
