“Home from Home at the Annex Garden B&B”
Reviewed 3 November 2013

I very recently spent a week at this wonderful B&B and have nothing but praise for it and the owner Roberta. Before I begin my review let me say that the dogs mentioned in previous articles are the most unobtrusive dogs I have ever met, so don't let the presence of dogs deter you from choosing this beautiful accommodation. One scarcely sees the dogs. They never come into the rooms and unless one is deadly allergic to the presence of dogs it is a pleasure to watch them. They sit in their corner, are small pugs and are quite amusing.

I stayed for 4 nights in the apartment on the third floor and for 3 nights in the apartment on the lower level. Both these apartments are very comfortable, clean and offer a peaceful atmosphere, rare to find in Toronto accommodations. Situated in the Annex, Annex Garden is less than half a block from College St. where one immediately finds TTC Streetcars. The U of Toronto Athletic Bldg and Robarts Library are a ten minute walk away, Little Italy is up the St. and Harbord and Bloor Sts. can be reached with a few minutes walk up the street. Kensington Market and Chinatown are right around the corner.

The apartments are equipped with everything one needs to make simple or elaborate meals in modern kitchens. There are laundry facilities in the upper apartment and right outside the door in the lower one. I did not sample the breakfasts but if they are anything like the rest of the services here I am certain they are delicious.

The bathrooms are modern, spacious, clean, with soap, shampoo, conditioner, plenty of towels and a heated towel rack, as well as nice deep tubs. The bedrooms have plenty of dresser and closet space, as well warm bathrobes. The apartments are moreover equipped with a desk and the WiFi reception is excellent.

Roberta is an informative and accessible host, full of good ideas. This amazing Victorian B&B with its modern amenities is one of the most welcoming and comfortable place I have ever stayed at. I shall definitely come back here on my next visit to Toronto.

Room Tip: Every room is comfortable and has something different to offer.

Just returned from a short break staying at this wonderful B&B located near the heart of Toronto. Beautifully decorated, spotlessly clean and comfortable this B&B meets every travellers need for a place to stay when away from home. The owner is a generous host who made us feel really welcome. Breakfast was delicious with lovely coffee. Thank you, we look forward to staying with you again.

As a frequenter of B and Bs, I have pretty high standards, and the Annex Garden is by far one of the best I've ever stayed in. The property is beautiful- a lovingly restored and maintained home in a great Toronto neighborhood. I have little tolerance for teddy bears and doilies, and there was nary a bear nor antimacassar in sight. What there was was a large room with beautiful furnishings, a Keurig coffee maker (!!!) a small fridge to keep my wine cold, and the appropriate glasses and implements of destruction with which to enjoy my wine (and cheese), not to mention a private deck on which to enjoy said repast.

That said, if you do not like dogs, or are allergic to them, this is not the place for you, as two of your hosts are adorable pugs, who like to warm the feet of guests during breakfast (which is healthy and delicious). The human hostess is wonderful, too!

The neighborhood is great, too. My husband and I walked everywhere. And when we got tired of walking, we had no trouble taking the street car. In fact, two line stop in close proximity to the property. There are also some really good restaurants right near by.

So if you like comfort, pug dogs, and a spotlessly clean environment, stay here!

Room Tip: The King room has a private deck attached.

We stayed in the Kings room. This room has its own private balcony. The breakfasts were wonderful.

This place is centrally located, and only a 5 minutes walk to the street car. We enjoyed our stay here.

Make sure you rent a small car, unless you are comfortable parking in tight space.

My companion and I were looking for a central location for a couple of nights in Toronto - somewhere near restaurants and downtown. We couldn't have been happier than to find the Annex. It's a central location - a pleasant walk to downtown and other popular areas. The house is a meticulously maintained Victorian in a quiet neighborhood with wonderful eateries and shopping nearby. Roberta is a wonderful hostess, knowledgable about the area and attractions. We stayed in the second floor room with a very comfy king bed, fireplace, fridge and coffemaker, desk and private patio. The bathroom was the most modern and well appointed I've ever seen in an older home - even a towel warmer ! Very tasty breakfast and Roberta was kind enough to prepare a "take out" breakfast for us on the second day as we had an early flight to catch at the airport. Only complaint is that we didn't plan to stay for more than 2 nights - I would have loved a longer time to linger. We'll be back.

Room Tip: For elegance, quiet and privacy, the king room on the second floor was perfect.

We recently spent three nights in Toronto and at the recommendation of a friend decided to base ourselves in the vibrant Annex neighbourhood, leading us to find the Annex Garden Bed and Breakfast. Located just a few minutes' walk from the restaurants and shops of Little Italy / College Street, Roberta's beautiful home is a haven of peace and comfort in the middle of a big city.

She made us feel very welcome - and as other reviewers have commented, provided wonderful breakfasts each morning, lots of fresh fruit, yoghurts as well as freshly brewed coffee and other cooked treats from her kitchen - the pecan waffles were a highlight.

We had the Queen room on the top floor, which featured a spacious bedroom and very modern and well appointed en suite bathroom (with heated towel rails), plenty of space for clothes storage; and tea and coffee making facilities just outside our door. The room was beautifully air conditioned and had its own iron and ironing board, a bonus when you are on a long trip.

We have stayed in many B&Bs over the years and this was one of the best we can remember in an inner urban location anywhere in the world, and excellent value for money. All the other guests we met seemed relaxed, comfortable and pleased to be staying here too.

The downstairs dining and sitting rooms, in common with the house as a whole, have been beuatifully renovated and decorated. It really was a pleasure to be a guest in this lovely home. Would definitely visit again when in Toronto.

Thanks Roberta for your hospitality.

Room Tip: The Queen Room is excellent if you have no issues with going up two flights of stairs. Other rooms...

We greatly enjoyed our stay at Annex Garden B&B. The historic house is very beautiful and tastefully decorated. The room including the bathroom was perfect and the breakfasts excellent. Roberta made us as well as other guests most welcome. We can highly recommend her B&B!

The location is very central and within walking distance to Kensington Markets. A streetcar stop is right around the corner.
