I'll lead with why I’m giving the Eaton Chelsea just 3 stars. Every time I walked into the lobby, there were at least 75 people milling around yelling. The time didn't matter. It could be late at night or early in the morning. I shouldn't count it against the hotel, but I won't stay there again. It was just too big.
There were several elevator areas depending on which floor you were going to, and that boggled my mind right off. I had to find the “green elevators”. Usually a pack of people were waiting to get on the elevator (and there were 3 actual elevators in each area).
I had to wade through people to get to the concierge. I had to wade through people to get to the elevator. I had to wade through people to go get breakfast. The dining area, though large enough, was a mob scene, so I either ordered room service or brought it upstairs.
Next time I go to Toronto, I’ll go further north – probably on the University of Toronto campus or quieter areas like that.
If you like being where the action is, The Eaton Chelsea is your hotel. I want to be adjacent to the action in case I feel inclined to be involved in the action (which is unusual). I don’t like being in the middle of it.
You wouldn’t know that the hotel was that action-packed from the outside, because it’s a little bit removed from the shopping district (within walking distance). But once you walked through the revolving doors it was very loud and busy.
Otherwise, the service was great – everyone answered every question I posed to them: the desk clerk, the concierge, the bellhop, the gift shop clerk… didn’t matter.
The room was clean and nice. My room looked out onto one of the other towers of the hotel, so I didn’t have much of a view. However, my favorite feature was the King size bed. It was soft enough to make you swoon, but not so soft that your back hurt the next morning. Perfect. I woke up with all the huge pillows surrounding me and laying horizontally across.
I had fairly noisy neighbors when I checked in. I turned on the TV and then I couldn’t hear them anymore. They went to bed before I did. They woke me up in the morning when they were checking out (yes, I asked the desk clerk if they had left). I told her they weren’t noisy enough for me to complain, but I was glad they left.
I had poutine (the Canadian dish) in the English pub (one of several restaurants in the hotel) and a beer after a grueling bus tour (that will be another review at a later date). It was pretty darn good. The pub was quiet, though a blues band was setting up for the evening festivities.
In general, coming back to my room was very pleasant and relaxing. I felt like I had been talking non-stop since December, and just some solitude in a nice large, comfortable room was just the ticket. But next time I’ll stay at a mid-sized hotel off the beaten track.
