“Family run restaurant brings a fresh taste to the neighbourhood”
Reviewed 13 October 2012

Just got back from our first visit to El Pulgarcito, and I'm sure it won't be our last. The restaurant is decorated in "Cheap and Cheerful"; it's very modest but nice. The television on the wall is permanently on and tuned to spanish music videos. It was a bit distracting but the younger family members enjoyed it.

We ordered the nachos, and two pupusas, the bean one and the cheese and bean, for starters, and for mains the five of us ordered a chicken quesadilla, a beef burito, a chicken burito, the tiger shrimp and the grilled chicken.

The nachos baked with cheese came heavily laced with sour cream, chopped romaine lettuce, tomato and cucumber. They were good and the portion was generous. We have never tried pupusas before so we quartered them and everyone took a piece or two, dousing it with the thin tomato salsa and vinegar cole slaw that was served along side. Not greasy at all and very tasty!

Each of the mains came with a generous portion of spanish rice and a generous portion of the romaine lettuce, tomato and cucumber salad. The salad dressing was a bottle of Kraft Creamy Caesar Salad Dressing placed on the table. No pretensions here. I would rather have that than have my salad swimming in a lake of oil and vinegar that's been sloshed in by a cook who's not paying attention so I was fine with it. The buritos, quesadilla, and chicken also came with a blop of refried red beans. My guys aren't refried bean fans and everyone passed on eating theirs so no comments available on how they tasted.

The buritos were both very generous in size, topped with sour cream and grated white cheese. Both had been ordered as "mild" and the designated eaters said they were "fine" and could only eat 1/2 each as they were so filling. The quesadilla was also judged "fine" and filling as well. (Sorry, that's all the description I could get out of the kids!) The grilled chicken was sliced and flavoured with a dry spice rub before being grilled. It was flavourful but a little on the dry side. I thought it would have been improved with some kind of dipping sauce to moisten it up but the designated eater liked it just the way it was. I had the grilled tiger shrimp in garlic sauce. It was really, really good. You have to use your fingers to get the delicious morsels out of those pesky shells so you are forced! Forced! I say, to lick your fingers at the end to get them clean. You won't want to waste a drop of sauce so go ahead, lick your fingers. It's that kind of place. Thankfully, the owner provided a wet serviette so once the fingers were licked clean they could be wiped properly. :D

Service was fine. We had called ahead to reserve a table just in case. It wasn't really necessary but you never know, so I'd probably call ahead again because there are 5 of us. When we arrived we found our table and got ourselves the menus. After we ordered the owner let us know that we should just go to the refrigerator and grab the cans or bottles we wanted. Again, it's that kind of place. The food was a bit of a wait, but that's because the ladies in the back are making up each plate fresh as they're ordered.

Bottom Line: A delicious meal, enjoyed by everyone. We'll definitely be back.

“What a fantastic find...”

We can't wait to back. The food was great. The service was friendly and efficient. It doesn't look like much but it is one of the best restaurants we have found in Scarborough. The menu is simple and freshly made. We will be back and we will take people back with us.
