“Best So Far”
Reviewed 11 November 2005

This lovely boutique hotel in Toronto was everything I expected and more. The service was absolutely wonderful from the valet, to Melissa on the front desk. We had a suite which had all the amenities you needed. The bed was perfect and the fact that the windows opened was really nice. The ambiance is serene and upscale. We had massages in the spa where we were treated like a King & Queen. This is the third boutique hotel we have stayed in in Toronto, also South Beach and by FAR the best! The little restaurant is not too trendy and overpriced. The price is amazingly good, especially for the Romantic Retreat pkg. we had. We highly recommend it.

After reading rave reviews for this hotel I was considerably disappointed once I arrived. The first issue was hot water, or lack of it, and after asking four times for it to be fixed I was finally moved to another room (albeit better), where there was no bath plug (something which took another three days and numerous mentions to fix). If you order food it comes from the adjacent cafe, and is served in plastic cartons and is often not warm. Plus the hotel is already feeling a bit run down - the corridors are already in a state of disrepair. I don't think there's enough staff to go around in general. Considering the cost I think this hotel requires a serious management overhaul.

My husband and I spent our first anniversary here on Labour Day weekend.

We booked with Expedia and paid an average of $170 Canadian per night. Expedia offered a Queen sized bed, but we requested a king on a high floor and were accomadated accordingly.

Front Desk:
Most front desk staff were plesant and frank when you spoke with them. Late check out is a joke as we were told that it all depends on who is at the counter so beware!!! Upon checking out we overheard the girl at the counter quoting higher pricing than what we were told. The valet guy was not always around and not in a uniform so you may wonder who this guy on a smoke break is coming up to you to take your keys. We gave our keys to the front desk several times just to make us feel better. As we said the valet wasn't always around and nor was there a full time bell boy out front to help you with your bags, so we unloaded our car ourselves.
Room:
The room did not look exactly like the hotel pictures but was quiet close.
The bed was comforatable and roomy. The duvet and pillows were down-filled and bothered our allergies, but once as I told the front desk they replaced them with hypoallergenic ones. The mini bar was very expensive but there are many alternatives in the area. We took an inventory of our things and found some items missing and reported this to the front desk in hopes of avoiding any extra charges.
There was no DVD or VCR in our room, just the pay-per-view, which was kind of pricey.
Yes there isn't much of a view but if we were in the Dominican they would have charged us extra because you could see a tiny spot of the lake.
There is a washer and dryer in room but only a tiny box of tide, so if you are staying a while you will need to bring your own. That goes the same for the dishwasher detergent, although we didn't ask the front desk for more, so this is an assumption.
We did find it odd that there was only one robe in the room as it was based on double occupancy.
If you are an out of town travller you might want to ask about a safe as we did not have one in our room nor were we offered one.
The only yucky thing was the carpet in our room as there were many stains on it.
Food:
It was a pleasent surprise to find a basic bacon and eggs breakfast for free at Fran's as we understood that only a continental breakfast was included. Not only could you have bacon and eggs but also pancakes and french toast but, you had to order the bacon and sausage on the side if you ordered the french toast or pancakes. Juice was also extra. We agree the waitresses were not as friendly if they knew you were from the hotel. Our first waitress was nice but not on the following days. I suppose it's because some cheap people won't tip them. A case of bad seeds spoiling it for the rest of us.
Overall we enjoyed our stay but are going to try somewhere else in November as there are many nice hotels out there for us to try. We would definetly go back at some point in time. If you want soem thing a little more non-traditional this is a great place to stay.

My wife and I returned today from a five night stay at the Pantages in Toronto. As usual, the reviews on TripAdvisor were spot on. So, let me give you the good bits:

* Good location - not in the entertainment district - but after exploring this area found it rather seedy anyhow. The location of the hotel was just right. The eaton centre was just across the road; bars across the road; theatres next door etc. Really just right.

* Great Hotel - this really is a boutique hotel (even though some reviewers seem not to agree). The price was super (booked via Expedia and paid £60 per night). The amenities were superb - great gym; extensive tv and film selection; nice comfy bed; nice bathroom; everything in the room (and I mean everything! e.g. from chopping board to iron to CD player to dishwasher to dish cloths to washer/dryer!! - everything!). Free internet in the lobby was a real plus and really didn't need to be provided.

* Breakfast is included - we took the cooked breakfast at Fran's next door (they have an agreement with the hotel so that the breakfast is provided free to guests). However - my goodness, I've never seen so many miserable waiters/waitresses in my life. When they knew we were from the hotel, they just couldn't be bothered and the service was awful. Not sure why as the guests tip them - having said that, I tipped every day and that is probably my biggest regret! BUT - nice to have a great breakfast in the deal.

All in all, I'd certainly stay there again. It was a differently nice hotel, certainly better than a stuffy old Toronto 5 star hotel.

(oh and by the way - didn't hear much at all from the hospital - I think some people have sensitive earing. The key point is this - if you needed the hotel, couldn't think of a better location! - but if you are going to go and sleep in a big city (and anyone who's been to New York/London/Paris will understand)....there are sirens!!!

If I had to use one word to describe this hotel it would either be relaxing or chic. The rooms are very big, comfortable, clean, tastefully appointed with modern furniture and accents. To our surprise, the rooms were incredibly quiet. Service was incredible, with the front desk answering promptly and effectively to any requests. We made use of the spa for a massage and found it to be an oasis of peace. The meditation channel, spa, and crystals placed on your bed gave it a gentle new age twist which we enjoyed.

If you stay here, you are blocks away from the metro which is clean, easy to use and safe. The hotel is conveniently located close to shops, restaurants, and cafes. Overall, we give the Pantages four thumbs up and would certainly return as well as recommend it to friends and family!

A hotel with a lot of pluses and some minuses. On one major point, though, I think other reviewers have been overly harsh. The room we were given is in the Serenity Suite and is across the street from a downtown hospital, St. Michael's. But the two nights we were there, we didn't hear a single siren. Indeed, we didn't even hear all that much street noise, which is amazing, considering that Shuter is a fairly busy downtown side street.

PLUSES

Extraordinarily comfortable (and spacious) bed, probably one of the most comfortable I've ever slept in at a hotel. Big plus.

Also nice to have other furnishings -- not just a bed and a desk and a nightstand. There was a chaise longue-type chair on one side of the room and a sofa-type piece set into the desk unit by the window.

Terrific location (in the south-central part of downtown near Elgin & Winter Garden Theatre, Eaton Centre, and Dundas Square, and right across the street from Massey Hall), just a block walk from the Queen Street metro station.

Extensive cable TV channel selection.

Not the largest bathtub in the world, but the water pressure was right and the water temperature was always hot, which was a huge plus.

As mentioned above, relative lack of street noise for such a central urban location.

MINUSES

Harried (seemingly understaffed) and sometimes sloppy desk service -- they are more than somewhat scattered and, although they are apologetic for their lapses, it's irritating to arrive at the hotel to check in after a long day to discover that the front desk is claiming that your reservation was cancelled.

Parking when you first arrive is a confusing ritual. There is no clear signage on the front of the building indicating where parking is supposed to occur. The parking is done by valet but that is not evident from either signage or activity outside the building (unless you happen to see a valet actually moving a vehicle). The street is quite busy until after 10pm and it's not a simple procedure to pull to the curb and run inside to ask for the valet.

A stack of goodies sitting on top of the fridge and inside that look tempting but are all sealed and come with a hefty price tag -- $4.95 Canadian for a bottle of Coke that you could get for $2 from a vending machine is ridiculous (and that's just one example).

No glasses in the room anywhere (except a couple of decorative glasses sitting on a shelf as part of the desk unit), and the front desk seemed mystified by our request for a bucket of ice.

Shower was very roomy and sleek, but the water took five minutes to heat up.

All in all, the room was handsome and impressive, but in terms of conveniences versus appearance, the hotel is weighted too far toward the latter at the cost of the former. It's nice to have hardwood floors and bubbling fountains inside bamboo floral settings, but it's nicer to have efficient room service and some of the basic amenities that you would find in a Motel 6.

We arrived from Rochester on the ferry early at 12 noon - they had a room ready so we could immediately check in (check-in is usually 3:00 PM). Rooms are beautifully equipped with complete kitchen, including washer & dryer if you need one -very serene atmosphere even in the elevators -
We did not hear any sirens from the hospital at night and slept better than ever in very comfortable beds - a continental breakfast is included in your stay and it was delicious and is served from 7-11AM - we stopped at the Spa at the hotel before we left and the staff took us on a complete tour of all their facilities - next time we definitely want to book some spa services - on the web site for the hotel you will find a complete listing and prices for all the spa services - we were leaving on the ferry to go home but we didn't need to leave the hotel until 5:30 PM - they kept our luggage for us in a separate room as we had to check out by 11:00 and actually they offered us a later check out at 12:30 if that would help us - they called a taxi for us to get to the ferry which was there in 5 minutes -
