Description: Hawthorne Food & Drink was established for the sole cause of giving back to the community. On the one hand, the restaurant serves delicious farm to fork city food made from local, seasonal and sustainable ingredients. On the other, it provides free training and career development for people in need of skills and employment. The menu represents the amazing diversity of Toronto. Hawthorne Food & Drink is a social enterprise of Hospitality Workers Training Centre (HWTC), a non-profit organization based on a sectoral workforce development approach.

This is a small restaurant with an open kitchen. It was full but even so it was not noisy making conversation easy and comfortable. There was one server so service while not slow was a bit neglected. We were here for lunch...first impression is the menu felt limited. A couple of apps, sandwiches and entrees that did not appeal. The chicken/pear sandwich had limited flavour. It was served with fries or a salad - the salad was almost a garnish. The brisket sandwich was deemed OK but not enough sauce. Not enough appeal to bring me back.

Food was good, very reasonable, small wine list but they have all Ontario wine ! Very local, must try the beef brisket and tongue sandwich, so yummy!

This is one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had in years. Seems a well named establishment as Hawthorne trees are trees you want to stay away from due to the thorns -- I would say you want to stay away from this restaurant as well.

Some of the worst service I've ever experienced matched with a poor wine list, ill-described food items, plates that ill-paired or feel empty, and a price-point much too high.

The music is too loud and any vibe there might have been is soured by the faces of the patrons who are all frustrated and disappointed.

If you feel like waiting over an hour for an appetizer and a good 30+ minutes for an awful and overpriced glass of wine from Niagara then this is the place to go. Bleck.

With so many wonderful places to dine in Toronto. We will never, EVER, be back to Hawthorne.

We tried Hawthorne this week with 5 adults. We found the appetizer items very good (peach/tomatoe salad a surprise favourite, zucchini salad, minestrone soup, corn flan and Montcorte cheese options were well worth ordering). The fried oysters were delicious but honestly... THREE tiny oysters for $12..that's outrageous. The the pork ribs (which was the only substantial dish, size wise) were greasy and tasted like ham (they were ok, but not great). The fish was bland, the quinoa salad was bland. The best dessert was the date bar, hands down.
The music is way too loud also, we could not hear each other and we were at a table for 6.
I would drop in for craft beer and a few snacks if in the area but I would not come back for a full dinner.

Been here a couple of times, the food has been good no matter what I got. Service was great, but they've had some turnover so need to check out the new chef's creations.
