“Cool Design Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 October 2011

I loved the Gladstone! Housed in a beautiful historic building, each room has been designed with care by a different local artist to create a unique experience for all. I really appreciated the care that was put into crafting a comfortable, well-designed environment, both in the room and in the public areas of the building, while still being able to keep costs reasonable. The art in the public areas was really fun and I loved that there were cool events happening each evening that I could pop into downstairs.
The room I stayed in was small and the bathroom is tiny (more like staying in a European hotel), but it was perfect for me. The design was simple, but was effective in creating a calming ambiance.
The food in the cafe downstairs was excellent - healthy, delicious and reasonably priced.

Room Tip: My room on the 4th floor was very quiet even on evenings when there were multiple events (bands, art...

This hotel was really fun and artsy. It felt like I had a trendy studio loft of my own. The people working there were very friendly and helpful. I would say the only problem was that when people came in late, it was very loud and the shower in the room I stayed in was VERY small. Other than that it was really interesting and I would definitely recommend it!

After a long flight we found reception to be slightly frosty and unfriendly. You need the opposite after a long trip. The room was also slightly disappointing. We found it to be small and the design a bit half hearted with a very strange shower!
It's beautiful old building but could do with a bit of warmth and character. Having stayed elsewhere in Toronto I'd recomend the hotel a couple of blocks east.

Spent 3 nights in Room 402 which is decorated as a room would have been in the hotel's hey-day. Exceptionally well done. Though not one of the largest rooms it was extremely well-designed so we never felt cramped. Wonderful large windows that did open, contrary to review below. The hotel is a historic gem that has been renovated to preserve history but also to add a contemporary vibe. Each floor's "lobby" is actually a gallery which fits well with the hip and up and coming neighborhood full of galleries, unique shops, and ethnic food. Its definitely a scene at night with 2 bars in the hotel and several on the block that go late into the night, so we appreciated Byron recommending this room as one that wouldn't have any street noise. We found the streetcar right outside the door incredibly convenient - basically can get everywhere you need to go on a day pass that the staff can sell you (unlimited on and off for 2 on the weekend). Breakfast was fantastic and we had a fabulous early dinner in the cafe. All in all, you can't beat the ambience, value, friendly staff, and quirkiness anywhere in Toronto. If you like antiseptic cookie cutter rooms, this isn't the place for you, but for everyone else, its a great find.

Room Tip: Choose a room that has a north view (noted on the description of the rooms on the website) to avoid...

I loooved the artist-designed rooms! I stayed at 3 different rooms for the 3 nights I was in Toronto just to see the designs. They all were cozy and home-y! You can sometimes hear the guests from outside the room but it wasn't much of a bother. The elevator had to be operated by the hotel staff because it's a really old, manually-operated type. I liked it though, felt like being brought back in time. The hotel is close to nice little shops and cafes along Queen. Even caught Coldplay at the CTV lot!

Room Tip: design-wise check out the available rooms on their website for photos. i liked the rooms on the four...

We stayed there for 3 nights in total and thoroughly enjoyed the hotel. Upon arrival we were helped to our room via the fantastic central lift, a working remnant of the historic building. We stayed in the Canadiana room which, whilst quite interesting, wasn't the most inventive interior design I've ever seen. However, the room was a good size for a major city and whilst the AC worked fine, it would've been nice if the windows opened a little bit. The shower was pretty terrible, as it didn't fully switch from the bath tap supply to the shower nozzle, but there was always plenty of pressure/hot water.
Free coffee delivered to your room is a nice perk, and the dry-bar in the room has some really nice stuff, if somewhat overpiced.
The location is VERY far West and, as someone who like to walk cities, it's quite a trek from anywhere central, but the hotel can't change this and I should've realised prior to booking tbh!
Overall, it's a well designed hotel with some nice features in a great building. If you're driving, don't mind cabs, or are happy on the streetcars then the location is no problem.
