“Rooms with Style - Great Casual Service”
Reviewed 24 January 2010

Coming to town for the Interior Design Show, it seemed appropriate to stay at the Gladstone. Artist designed rooms and loads of character is right up our alley! We weren't disappointed. Our room was painted in the colors of twilight, with an enormous bed and a great custom neon grate on the window. We asked for a quiet room (there is a popular bar on the first floor and the second floor was hosting a design event) and they didn't fail us. Our fourth floor room on the back even kept us from hearing the streetcars (conveniently with stops in front of the hotel) With the door shut, we couldn't hear a thing and slept like babies.

The cafe had lovely food and strong tasty coffee. Can't go wrong there.

If you like a casual hotel with character in a fun neighborhood, this is your place. If you like a chain hotel with fussy service, a pool and a gym, this is NOT your place.

This is a wonderful boutique hotel and I highly recommend it to travelers who are seeking a unique, eclectic, art-oriented small hotel with extremely friendly and helpful staff and fresh, creative, casual, gourmet dining. My wife and I are in our early 50's from New Brunswick Canada. We visited relatives in Southern Ontario over the Christmas holidays and stayed in Toronto for a couple of days of shopping, dinning, and to see a concert on New Year's eve. Instead of the standard cookie-cutter chain hotel, we wanted a small hotel with character and excellent, friendly customer service and absolutely found it at the Gladstone!

Rooms: Each room is unique and decorated by an artist, some of whom are living in-residence at the hotel. It was great fun exploring the hotel's website to select a room and we ended up in the "Billio Room" which includes many antiques and is finished in rich velvet, red, and gold fabrics with a beautiful wall of exposed brick. The room was spotlessly clean, the bed was extremely comfortable, and the bathroom modern, functional and with fine-quality soaps and conveniences.

Dining: The restaurant is a beautiful bright room with antique wooden tables, high ceilings, exposed brick, beautiful artistic glass lamps, and tall windows which look directly onto the busy sidewalk on Queen Street. The food is fresh, creative, emphasizes organic and natural ingredients, and is surprisingly reasonably priced considering the quality.

Overall Ambiance: Apparently this is the oldest hotel in Toronto and fell upon hard times a few decades in the past. However, it was purchased by new owners in the 90's and beautifully renovated and restored. They kept many of the original furnishings and accessories, and especially attractive is the abundance of natural brick in the interior rooms and hallways. The public areas exhibit many works by local artists which apparently change regularly.

Service: The staff is young, friendly, cheerful, and extremely knowledgeable and helpful.

You won't find some of the amenities of a chain hotel such as business center, exercise room, or pool; so it may not be the best choice for business travelers or families with young children. However, if you're seeking a romantic or cultural retreat and a base for exploring, shopping, and attending shows in Toronto; then the Gladstone is a perfect choice.

I highly recommend this hotel and we will be returning again.

  • Liked — Artistic and interesting ambiance/decor, great food, great service, friendly atmosphere.
  • Disliked — No significant problems. Only one elevator so may not be ideal for people with mobility issues.

Right smack bang in the thick of everything exciting, cool and good, the Gladstone was a unique slice of home in a city I had never visited before. Great location. Brunch is good and so is the bar. The salty dark chocolate bars in the room are addictive. Lots of information in the hotel about what's happening all over the city. Look out for the magazine/ new stand at the door. Some very interesting art installations around the place and I love the idea that each room has a different theme. And the staff are a genuinely helpful and friendly bunch. Thanks for a great stay.

From a purely practical standpoint, the hotel rooms were clean and beautifully decorated, the staff were helpful and cordial without being overly perky (pet peeve of mine). But the really amazing aspect of the Gladstone is the fact that each room is a different work of art, they are just truly beautiful, the idea for having such diverse decorating themes in each room is so innovative, it was amazing. I was there at Christmas and sometimes hotel staff at holiday time can make you feel like they're annoyed that you're there, this was not the case though. I will definitely return to the Gladstone and I would suggest that visitors to Toronto check out their website - www.gladstonehotel.com to check out the different rooms available.

My husband and I stayed at the Gladstone and were very impressed. As many others have said previously, it's a very different hotel full of life and charisma. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to anyone staying in Toronto. In addition, we enjoyed a hearty breakfast in the morning and were very pleased with the portion size and value for our money. Great place, would definitely go back if I had the opportunity!

Staying at the Gladstone was such a wonderfully unique experience. The hotel was very accommodating when we experience delays getting there due to winter weather conditions. The room was warm and cozy, the homemade soaps where a special touch. We had breakfast in the morning at the cafe... the food was fresh, local, and amazing. We're planning on coming back in the summer!

I visit Toronto three or four times a year on business and always stay at the Gladstone. The artfully designed rooms somehow combine odd, even stricking, interior design with old fashioned hotel comfort. The food in the bar and cafe is very dependable- I'd rather eat breakfast here than anyplace else in the city.
