“Parlour of Twilight”
Reviewed 21 February 2011

My spouse and I are both Torontonians who recently left the city. On our last night in Toronto, we stayed for one night at the Gladstone in the Parlour of Twilight room. I would highly recommend both the room and the hotel. The bed was comfortable, the bath products were both lovely and local and the food in the cafe and the Melody Bar was very tasty.

If you love art and history, you'll love this hotel! It's full of beautiful details and artistic touches. And they have a morning coffee service - you fill out your order and leave it on your door and it's waiting in the morning at your specified time! The individually decorated rooms are just exquisite and charming. A lovely experience!

This is the first time we stayed at the hotel. We decided to stay here based on the Trip Advisor reviews and searching the hotel website.

Room - We stayed in Billio. We liked the design, it had a full-sized bathroom and the room itself was spacious. When we arrived, the smoke alarm was beeping indicating that the battery needed replacement. We contacted the service desk and someone came up quickly to address the issue. What we didn't like about the room is how clearly we could hear the noise from the street below. The room itself faced Queen Street so we knew that we would have some noise to contend with so we were prepared for that. What we didn't anticipate was hearing the construction that started the following morning at 7AM. It was very loud and it woke us up. The windows are original and are not designed to absorb sound. Double pane windows would make sense. Speaking some more of noise, when we arrived, we were told that there would be an art exhibition taking place on the 3rd and 4th floors of the hotel where the guest rooms are located. We were told it would run from 7-10PM and that everything would shut down promptly at 10PM. The cash bar was located about 20 ft from our room and guests were permitted to roam around until 10:30. Voices carried right into our room. The fan in our room was quite loud too. I'm sure hotel management is aware of the noise issues because ear plugs were provided in the room.

Service - the hotel staff are friendly and attentive. We were at the Drake for dinner and brought dessert back to our room. We had no utensils. We called the front desk and someone brought up utensils quickly which we appreciated. As mentioned before someone came up quickly to address the smoke alarm issue. No complaints, service was great.

Location/Amenties - the hotel is in an up and coming trendy, artsy, neighbourhood. An interesting part of Toronto. It's about a 10 minute cab ride to downtown T.O.

Likes - prompt service, ambience, friendly staff.

Dislikes - noise issues and over-night parking is too expensive at $15.00. If you have a car, it will be parked outside in a grocery store parking lot behind the hotel.

Please don't go completely by our experence but read this review along with the others and make up your own mind. Based on our stay, we would not recommend this hotel until the noise issues are resolved and the hotel no longer provides ear plugs in the rooms. In our opinion, we paid a little too much for the type of stay we had.

We liked the groovy indie spirit of the Gladstone. Lots of fun rooms with an artsy feel. The rooms are a little on the small side with a bit of an upscale dorm room feel, but luckily they had artists redecorate. For example, although small and a bit campy, the WHITE room is indeed white from the floor to the ceiling with whitewashed recycled art on the walls - since it's all white it gave the feel of a bigger space.

The hotel room walls are thin so if your neighbour is noisy, too bad for you. The hotel did provide a package of ear plugs (lol) so it's aware of the issue I presume...

The scene is young - really good for 20's-30's with a peace & love groove to their soul.
The entertainment that night in the ballroom was a funny Burlesque show with a flexible sexual-orientation flavour...

The hotel bar had karaoke the night we stayed. We're not big fans since it usually involves giving a drunk a mic to howl into, but then if you're into it, it was probably a good time since the place was packed.

The staff is so helpful (from a genuine interest in doing their jobs well) and went out of their way to attend to the little things. The hotel itself is a wonder for the senses. Very cool vibe. Great location. My room (Canadiana) was extremely comfortable and I never wanted to get out of the extremely comfortable bed. I felt totally at home. This hotel is a great antidote to the vanilla boringness of other boutique hotels. I will be back!

Overall a great experience. The hotel and rooms are gorgeous. The food and drink in the cafe were wonderful - the best Ceasars we've had in a long time. My only bug was having to pay 15.00 for parking. Beautiful place in fab part of town.
