“Bed bugs (room #1)”
Reviewed 16 July 2010

The Havinn B&B looked fine and a good price for the location but unfortunately on our second night there we discovered bed bugs in our mattress (room #1 on the main floor). We told the owner and he seemed to take it seriously so we hope they won't rent that room until it is taken care of. However, he did not offer to give us any discount on the room rate for the two nights that we had stayed there.

Reasonable stay for the price paid. Very good location, walking northbound you get to Casa Loma quickly and looking southbound you can see CN Tower and there is a subway station nearby. The room I got was spacious and clean and the washrooms, though shared, were clean and, at least when I needed them, available. Breakfast was fine, with some variety of bread and coffee. The owner was friendly with me on the first day and then left me on my own, which was good. If you're traveling on a budget, I completely recommend. If you're expecting a hotel, then you'll be disappointed.

freezing cold accomodations (room heater requried), overpaid for the room that i got, had to go upstairs to access the tiny bathroom... no microwave or coffee maker available (can you imagine).. an added gift: an owner (husband) who regularly laughed at female guests,.... if you are a female traveller, do not stay here.

I stayed at the Havinn in July 2009.

It is well located close to the train station. After checking in I was left alone by the owners which I appreciated. The room was spacious & clean. The bed was comfortable. My bathroom was just outside my door across the hallway.

The breakfast was continental style but generally adequate and the kitchen facilities were very good if you wanted to cook your own meals.

There are plenty of bars & restaurants close by catering for students at the University.

Walk up the hill to Casa Loma - well worth a look

Very low-key, almost utilitarian common areas, in contrast to the well-furnished and comfortable big rooms. Old and sad-looking furniture in the kitchen and lobby with very little furnishings. Not warm and cosy as I imagined a B&B to be, but this was in comparison with a fantastic establishment I came from in Magog. Hardly see the host or any others staying there, as common areas are simply not inviting. Perhaps ideal for researchers looking for some peace and quiet, but it saps the energy out of a traveller looking for a good conversation.

The Havinn is in the Annex area of Toronto, near where many students live. It's very near a subway station, as well as a liquor store (you need these in still-puritainical Toronto), cafes and a big drug store.

For about $65 Cdn I had a big room on the top floor with a futon sofa, king bed, lots of nice oak pieces, and a TV. The breakfast (served on the second floor) includes yummy danish pastries, nice wholemeal breads, although a bizarre fact is that there is no milk for coffee, just a tiny thing of coffee cream. Still, a minor complaint, and there is a fridge to keep your milk container in! You can use the kitchen to cook in and there are two and a half bathrooms to serve six rooms. So there's always somewhere free.
It's a bit like a hostel because they don't do your room up every day, but at this price whaddya want? I've already recommended it and will again.

Stayed here for two nights and was wary at first of a shared bathroom, but in fact there a couple of bathrooms and it was not a problem.
It is more of home than just a simple bed and breakfast, which probably make the people staying there a little more respectful.
I would certainly recommand this place for value and location.
