Attraction details
Owner description: Established in 1979, this "gay, lesbian and queer" theater company produces edgy and provocative new Canadian works. Their work is not for everyone (the list of upcoming productions identifies shows that are "not for the faint of heart," and they mean it), but Buddies produces shows that you simply won't see anywhere else. The theater also stages Canadian adaptations of some well-known works, such as Ibsen's Hedda Gabler. American Sky Gilbert has helped build the theater's cutting-edge reputation.

“Absolutely fantastic”
Reviewed 30 September 2013

Went there for the first time to see a play. Loved everything about it. Simple, friendly, interesting, great space for an intimate play. Definitely lived up to their value mission of a safe, friendly, non-judgemental environment. Play was fantastic, audience was great. Will go back again for sure!

“A fun night dancing”
Reviewed 11 June 2013

We weren't looking for a gay club but stumbled across this place as it was the only one that had music that we could find !! There was a $7 cover charge and when we arrived around 11.15pm it was very quiet. The staff were great and we were treated to our first drinks :-) By 11.30pm the place was getting busy and come midnight it was wall to wall dancing.

We didn't see the theatre part but if you are looking for a cool place for a few hours dancing, a few drinks and are not threatened by the gay scene and culture then stop by and take a look. We met a few new people and had an awesome time.

“Penelopiad was fantastic theatre”
Reviewed 10 February 2013

This is an interesting little venue mounting great theatre. The play was the best I have seen in a long time, and I am a regular theatre goer. Staff are pleasant and helpful and there doesn't seem to be a bad seat in the house.

“Theatre Turned NightClub for LateNight!”
Reviewed 7 April 2012

Most travellers looking for a gay club in Toronto end up at Fly or maybe Crews & Tangos. But not a lot of visitors know that Buddies in Bad Times Theatre turns its space into a nightclub each Friday & Saturday night after 10:30-11pm. It's a nice change from the massive club anthems played at FLY.

I'd recommend Saturday nights. It's probably the most fun crowd in Toronto. It's a pretty young crowd. Mostly 19-30 aged. Not much drama. Just a group looking to have fun with friends and "buddies" to dance and Top 40 music.

It's not a big club. It's very no-frills: no fancy lighting or special effects. It's definitely the people that go to Buddies that makes it such a fun, friendly place to go.

Cover is usually around $7 cash
