“Nice But Expected More”
Reviewed 14 December 2012

We read about Camerini Ristorante and since we were staying nearby we decided to give it a try. The idea of an authentic family owned Italian restaurant really appealed to us. Opon arrival we were surprised by the simplicity of the place. The bright lighting and yellow paint theme was not necessarily a bad thing but not the atmosphere we were expecting. The staff were very welcoming and obliging throughout the meal. They helped us with entre selections and suggested a great Merlot which we really enjoyed. The problem was that meals were nothing to rave about for the prices we paid. I had the linguini with black tiger shrimp, one of the most expensive items on the menu at $25 which was delicious but it came with only two shrimp. I was shocked to say the least. At any rate a good time was had by all and I must say the service was great, just a bit pricey for the overall package.

“Great Italian food in a friendly place.”
Reviewed 11 December 2012

This is the sort of place where you love to come back. It's unpretentious and very friendly. As regulars you will feel as it you were returning home for another one of your mother's meals, always provided your mother was a great cook. The salads, the soup, the escargots, and especially the grilled calamari are all excellent starters. Whether you like pasta, sea food, chicken or veal doesn't matter: all of them are well-prepared and tasty. Our sons both like the gnocchi in Gorgonzola sauce on the side: not the low-cal option but very tastyThe wine list is short, and the wines are a tad expensive, but no one says you have to drink a lot. Among the desserts the tiramisu and the tartufo ice cream are our favorites. It's always a pleasure to chat with Domenico or one of his sons, and you leave the place feeling well-fed and well-cared for.

“Family-run neighbourhood ristorante”
Reviewed 30 August 2012

We recently moved to a midtown Toronto condo in a neighbourhood with a seeming infinite number of eating choices, from special occasion to plain diners. We always like to have a go-to restaurant within a km of our home where our priorities are, in addition to food, atmosphere, friendly service, and a non-chain look. Camerini has well met out criteria and is our special place for those Saturday nights when we want to go out.

It is a smallish place with somewhat fewer than 20 tables. Not extremely quiet due to patron talk and the owner wanders throughout talking to regulars, even accepting an invitation to sit down with a glass of wine. The waiters seem to be the sons of the owner. Music, alas, plays but is fairly quiet and usually operatic in content.

The menu is not enormous but there are plenty of choices, in addition to a few specials every night (my wife swears by them). We ignore the chalk boarded wine list (a bit steep) and settle for un mezzo litro vino rosso della casa, which is quite good enough. That will keep the bill below $100 even with a salad an two espressos.

Everything we have had has been good. Camerini is a reliable and consistent ristorante for all occasions.

“I almost don't want to tell you about this jewel of a restaurant.”
Reviewed 23 September 2011

Mt partner and I discovered this place last autumn, and we were knocked out by the service, the food and the overall charm of this little place. Imagine our surprise when, more than a month later, we returned to find that our server recalled what we had ordered the first time we were there. The meals is always start with a complimentary serving of bruschetta. The house wine (red) was really very good (no, we don't recall the brand name). And having ordered something different every time we have been there, I am never disappointed in the quality of the food. When asked for whole wheat pasta, they promised that the next time we were in, they would have it for us. We have taken several friends there, and all have been delighted. You need reservations for the weekend and they are closed Sunday. But maybe you would like somewhere else better, thereby ensuring that we can always get a table.

“Outstanding Food”
Reviewed 25 June 2011

We have been eating at Camerini for years now. The food is always outstanding and the number of regulars atests to that. The atmosphere is like eating at a friend's house or a Trattoria in Italy. We have never had anything that was not prepared to perfection. A very good wine list and excellent espresso round out the evening. If you want good food and a friendly atmosphere, then this is the place for you.
