“Above expectations”
Reviewed 30 July 2014

The decor was fabulously elegant yet comfortable and cozy. The staff was courteous and friendly. Ordered the steak and it was superb. Tender and flavourful. Overall it was above expectations and I was very satisfied.

“Lovely Dinner!!!”
Reviewed 3 July 2014

The poor reviews for this place don't seem fair based on our experience a couple weeks ago. We arrived around 9pm without a reservation, were greeted with a smile by a man in a sharp suit, taken upstairs to a nice table overlooking the main level, and other than the waiter taking too long to come back with our "water no ice lemon on the side" (he apologized before we mentioned anything) everything went smoothly. It's a steak and seafood place & the steak is great. We had an inexpensive Malbec that was perfect, split a delicious apple crumble for dessert, although it was marketed as a pie :) , and we walked out with a reasonable bill for a fine dining establishment. It was our first time dining there after driving by for years. Yes, it is dark and art deco and historical and is furnished to suit the period. Before going read http://www.davidduncanhouse.com/HISTORY.html.
If you want a steak at H60 or somewhere else modern go there instead. TDDH is special and unique and firmly rooted in Don Mills. Pretty cool if you ask me.

“Return toBad Old Days.....”
Reviewed 7 June 2014

It is a pity that this traditional restaurant seems to rely on its décor for whatever success they have rather on quality of culinary offerings.
Three of us dined there to celebrate an occasion, with miserable results.
For an appetizer a couple split Caesar salad, a blandish mixture of some greens and plenty of soaked-through croutons. My grilled squid was OK if bland as well. Bland is the predominant word here.......
One of the ladies had sea bass (bland, you guessed it) thin strip of fish accompanied by a huge baked potato. Big deal!
My pepper steak was tough, un-aged and not really worthy of a backyard barbecue. Accompanying pepper sauce was, how would you call it, bland.
The other steak was also reported as mediocre.
Our $100+ bottle of California cab was good given 300% mark-up.
Finally, the service from the "old boys" was OK, nothing more.
It seems to us this place must be great for functions when appreciation of good food does not come into play.
P.B. Toronto

“The Ultimate Fine Dining Experience”
Reviewed 29 May 2014

I am a regular diner at the David Duncan House. However my first experience dining there under the new management was two months ago when myself and a group of friends, all of which where first timers to the David Duncan House, decided to try it. I must say from the moment we walked in we loved the atmosphere and ambiance, the place looked fantastic. We were welcomed with a warm smile and hello from Jimmy and Bill. We were immediately taken to our table. The service was impeccable, We were never neglected by the restaurant staff. Now for the food, I had the rib steak which was cooked to perfection; my friends had the prime rib which in their words was out of this world both in size and taste. They all agreed this was the best prime rib they ever had. Throughout dinner we just could not help but emphasize how great the food was as well as the service. After dinner we capped off the evening with dessert. The dessert was also fantastic. The creme brule is to die for!!. We left this fine establishment feeling like kings. Since this initial visit, we have been back for lunch and are planning to come back for dinner. This is definitely quite the fine dining experience and would recommend it to everyone.

“Okay but not great”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

I used to come here with my family about every 2nd or 3rd saturday night. Then about 8 months ago or so the ownership has changed and it has never been the same. The service has gone down, as well as some of the standards. The waitress we had was just not fine dining material. We really did love this place and have only been back about 3 times in the past 8 months hoping they could get there act together, still disappointed. The service is not great anymore but the food is still good.
