“Greece in Toronto”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 May 2014 via mobile

We just had dinner at Athens. It was our first visit, and will not be our last! A family-owned and operated establishment. Very unassuming, but it is clear that it is a regular spot for the locals.

As we told the owner, it feels as though you are having dinner at a friend's home.

Great quality food and friendly and efficient service.

The owner told us that Athens was the oldest restaurant on The Danforth, started by his father.

Highly recommended.

“It's like a trip to Greece for the night”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 June 2013

This is the best Greek restaurant outside of Greece. If you have the opportunity to eat here don't miss it. We live an hour away so we sometimes make an overnight trip into the city just to come here. We've been six times now and haven't ordered from the menu yet. We've gone with the specials each time and have never been disappointed. Say hi to the owner, George when you go. He'll make you feel welcomed like a guest in his home.

“Feels like your in Greece”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 June 2013 via mobile

I was taken here by some friends while visiting Toronto. It's a regular haunt if theirs and was keen to see how it stacked up to their reviews.

This is no chain restaurant and it ain't real flash inside, BUT it all adds to the authenticity.

Food was amazing, wine terrific and George the owner and his staff all super friendly and accommodating.

Highly recommended!!!

“Give him to the Greek”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 November 2012

I went there with my parents after a friend recommended it. This is a very unassuming place. We first entered the restaurant feeling a bit weird. There was one Mangas sitting at the end of the bar which is situated at the front. The dining area is at the back. He gave us a smile and said hello. This is a very low key taverna with Greek regulars. The place was empty around 5:30pm. The placed looked unprepared to receive guests. There was nothing on the tables. The server was nice and polite while running around answering the phone. During this time, we were a bit suspicious because the place was quiet for a Saturday. My mom went downstairs to verify to bathrooms, she came back and said they were spotless and very clean. When we received our food, we were astonished by the quality of it. This is truly Greek foods...like my father used to make back then. We had lam, and veal with green peas (fasolia). Awesome. We ate like kings for a very reasonable price. I will go back for sure.

“Unassuming but excellent taverna”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 September 2012

I avoided this restaurant because the men that are always standing outside smoking and drinking made me think that it was more of a bar than a restaurant. One night, a friend took us there. I've now been back 5 or 6 times, and it has been consistently excellent. The lamb chops and souvlaki are superb. I particularly like the cod with spinach; very home made and generous. The tomatoes in the salads are ripe, unlike the ice-cold pink tomatoes that unfortunately feature at many Danforth restaurants. Plus, the prices are extremely reasonable. I would say that it's the only Toronto restaurant that reminds of a real Greek taverna!
