Owner description: The birthplace of Confederation and the seat of PEI's provincial legislature since 1847, Province House National Historic Site is Charlottetown's most significant cultural landmark. Walk in the footsteps of the Fathers of Confederation as you learn about the history of this magnificent example of neo-classical architecture and see how it remains a centre of political life for Islanders today.

Charlottetown makes the most of its role in the Confederation of Canada in this lovely, old building. It is presently under construction to bring out its best for the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Charlottetown accord next year. Enjoyed the very friendly, helpful staff and the video of the history of the building.

“This attraction could inlcude so much more.”
Reviewed 12 September 2013

We are history buffs and are very proud to be Canadian. We took this trip especially to experience the history. We were so disappointed. The only attraction in all of Charlottetown, that is operated by the federal government had very little. Province House was fine, but the thought of having people in character (we saw only 1 in all of Charlottetown). There was no in depth tour about this history. The video shown at Province House was old and in desperate need of upgrade. The picture was grainy and the narration wasn't that great.

The federal government could certainly throw in a few dollars to provide a better overview of "where Canada started".

As someone from the States my knowledge of Canada is very limited. The importance of what took place here is very interesting.

“Living History”

The place where the idea of Canada as a nation began. The ten-minute film was very informative and fun, as it was set inside the very building. So when you walk down the corridor to see the rooms, it is all pretty much the same as then!
I did not look into the gift shop. It is a self-guided tour, with friendly guides to tell about the two main rooms. There is no admission, and frankly, there isn't enough to warrant an admission fee. Donations are accepted.
From Province House there's lots to do within walking distance.

“Canadian and PEI historical centerpoint”

I felt a sense of awe being in the place where confederation came to be. The building itself is imposing and impressive, but of course its place in our country's history is the real pull.

The reenactment in front was fun to see, and gave a glimpse of the period represented...

Definitely pass by when in Charlottetown!
