“Disappointed B&B lover .”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 August 2011

My husband and I stayed her as part of our 12th Anniversary trip. I found it on the website and the person taking the reservation assured me that it was agreat place to stay.

But it was far less less than I expected and I am a lover of B&Bs.
The Inn was highly overpriced for what they have to offer. Our room had updated furniture but in an old added on building. The rooms have paper thin walls and the bathroom was very dated. The bed was very hard ... my husband did not mind it but I was not able to sleep.
The breakfast was terrible. We expected the typical B&B wonderful breakfast but instead were offered a 2x2 egg and mushroom dish with a very small portion of fruit. You were able to serve yourself toast and bagels with packaged jams...more of a continental breakfast.

The Inn keeper as he addressed himself was not overly friendly but polite. When I explained that we had been kept awake most of the night by the closet light that keep coming on for no reason. his reponse was that they were trying something new and "sorry".

The only thing charming about this B&B was the lovely lady in the breakfast room she must have been japanese and was very kind and very polite.
Unfortunately... we will need be back to stay at this B&B which is most disappointing because I frequent Charlottetown and I like to stay at B&Bs .
Signed... Karen - Halifax NS

Room Tip: Find another B&B there are many in the area for the same price.

Thank you very much for your review. I'd like to take the time to respond to a few of your remarks about our establishment. I was the person you spoke to on the phone, and I stand by my statement that The Sonata Inn is a wonderful place to stay.

About our rates. You mentioned that “The Inn was highly overpriced for what they have to offer.” Interesting. Here’s a list of what we have to offer to every single guest that walks through our door: Free highspeed Wireless internet (with 30mbps download and upload,) available throughout the entire property, a public computer for internet and printing (free) use, fax services, full breakfast (which includes a variety of hot dishes combined with an all you can eat assortment of yogurt, pastries, cereals and breads,) a public area with a microwave and coffee maker to make complimentary tea and coffee (as well as free cookies!) A coin operated laundry machine is located downstairs as well.

Our big spacious rooms are all equipped with brand new pillow top mattresses, luxurious sheets, flat screen televisions with a cable package, a dvd player with free DVD rentals available (our library of DVDs now grows almost everyday,) a mini fridge, as well as an ensuite 4 pc bath (shower, bathtub, sink, and toilet,) and of course, the most important amenity in the summer: air conditioning.

All of our guests are exposed to my incredibly knowledgeable and courteous staff who speak multiple languages (English, French, Spanish, Dutch, Japanese, Mandarin,) as well as my innkeeper, Dale, who is more than just “polite.” He is constantly vigilant at maintaining an incredibly comfortable and warm environment for every single guest we encounter. He is always available to help with any dinner suggestions, sightseeing adventures, or to book a few tickets to any performance venue in Charlottetown. Dale strives to provide a top level concierge service to all of our guests, and from the feedback I have received this year, he is succeeding.

Did I mention our location? We’re only two blocks away from the city centre! Close enough to walk to every attraction downtown, yet far enough to avoid any traffic noise. Walking to town takes only 5 minutes. Your car will be safe in our off street parking lot (which of course, is also included in our rates.)

This is true luxury, and this is what every single guest at The Sonata Inn experiences; and given our competition in Charlottetown, PEI, this is also true value.

About the breakfast: Portions are always hard to figure out when you serve a wide variety of guests from around the world. Portion size is always subjective, however, as you’ll see on the photos on our website (and our listing on tripadvisor,) you will be able to gather your own opinion of the portion. For our hungrier guests, we offer the extra pastries, yogurt, and cereals to add to the experience. To call our breakfast “continental,” makes no sense if you follow the actual definition, and to label our breakfasts as “terrible,” is very harsh, not to mention incredibly insulting to my mother, Jinny, who prepares the delicious breakfast entrées and pastries every morning.

About the bathrooms: While our bathroom floors may be older, the shower, and fixtures are all brand new, so I'm not sure how you came to the "dated," conclusion.

About our paper thin walls. They are not "paper thin," however, the doors to the rooms are older and do not quite seal the room, hence, noise tends to bleed in. This will be solved soon, as we are in the process of replacing all of our doors and adding additional soundproofing options to further soundproof our rooms. I appreciate you pointing this out.

Let us address a real concern you had here during your stay: The closet light. This year, we have installed a system in each of our rooms, that automatically activates the closet light when the door is opened. However, thanks to this reviewer, we have discovered that this system is faulty, and the sensor seems to turn the light on even when the door does not open. We are going to be tweaking this system to prevent this from ever happening again. We apologize greatly for this inconvenience; it should not have happened. However, seeing as you were only here for one night, it is impossible for us to rectify the issue the morning after.

If you would like to offer us an idea as to how we can rectify this situation for you, please let me know personally. You can find our number on our listing, and our email is located on the website. All emails send to The Sonata Inn come through me first. Let me know if you have any more questions or concerns.

Yours truly

As part of our tour of the Maritimes my wife and I stayed at the Sonata Inn for 3 nights. It is conveniently located in a quiet residential area that has other B&Bs. Downtown Charlottetown is relatively small so it was easy to walk to all the locations from the Inn.

The Inn is very clean and bright as are the rooms. Our room had a queen bed, couple of comfortable lounge chairs, a desk, HDTV & DVD and bar fridge. The bathroom area was roomy and contained a large closet. The linens were top notch (both on the bed and the towels in the bathroom). I didn't see anyone commenting negatively about sleeping at the Inn. Although the bed was comfortable we found it 'hot'. Our room heated up during the day due to the sun coming through the large front windows so we used the wall mounted air conditioner. However, the mattress seems to have a cover under the sheets that doesn't breathe. It must be designed to protect the mattress but it made it very uncomfortable.

The Inn is not a typical B&B in that it is run by hired staff. The manager, Dale, lives at the Inn but is not the owner. The cleaning staff are Japanese on visas. Everyone was friendly and helpful although some of the Japanese staff struggle with English and none speak French.

The breakfasts were good. A selection of cereals, muffins, scones, bagels, yogurt, juice, teas and coffee are available. They also offer a hot selection and small fruit bowl each morning. As an example, we had ham & scrambled eggs one morning and pancakes with fruit topping on another.

The Inn has excellent internet connectivity and they do provide a computer and printer for general use. One coin operated washer and dryer is available in the basement. Adequate parking is available.

A common kitchen is available on the 2nd floor with a fridge, coffee maker, toaster and microwave. House rules require guests to not use the facilities past 10 pm. It would have been appreciated if the other guests cleaned up after themselves, especially the coffee machine.

Over all the Inn offers good value. The problem we experienced with sleeping due to the mattress cover will likely influence future visits.

A college friend and I were exploring PEI for a long weekend and found the Sonata Inn to be ideal. It's a classic Victorian with a pleasant uncluttered decor. The place is very clean, located in a quiet residential area that is within a few minutes walk of the downtown. Our hosts were very pleasant and provided great directions anywhere we needed to go and equally good restaurant recommendations. The minifridge in the room, library, computer/printer, and kitchenette available to guests were some special bonuses you don't normally find in a b&b. Stay with confidence!

My family stayed at the Sonata in during July and it was a perfect home base. The rooms were large and extremely clean. Bathroom was big, clean and had everything you could need. Having two children, 9 and 11, it was great to have a little fridge in the room to store drinks and leftovers and the closet was huge and stored all of our luggage and bags. Breakfasts were good and there was always cereal, fresh baking, fruit and an egg dish with sausage or meat. Breakfast began at 8 and went until 9:30. We also made use of the washer and dryer which was greatly needed and appreciated.

The coloured lines you see on the streets are walking tours. You can follow a colour and they will take you around different areas of Charlottetown. Look in an information book or ask to see what ones mean what. We ate at The Gahan Brewery and it was amazing. Children are allowed and they had a good kids menu too. Everything was fresh and the salad was one of the best I had on our 3 week trip.

During our three days there we went to Cavendish and although we were not huge "Anne" fans my daughter loved it and we are now reading the books. Great walking trails, ice cream and information. The little video they show is worth seeing. On the way back we went to the Great Canadian Soap Company just down the road. It had wonderful soap that we have been using ever since and about 12 baby goats had been born and my kids were able to feed them ( a highlight). We also went to the Gouda Cheese Lady and saw how cheese was made on a video. The Saturday Market in Charlottetown was fantastic with lots of choices of vegetables, baking, cooked foods, meats, items etc.

Overall we had a wonderful time in Charlottetown although we did not do a lot in Charlottetown as it was quite rainy while we were there and we were not able to see the light show though we heard it was very good. It was only half an hour at most to many of the beaches, Brackley was fantastic for the kids, and to any of the sites we went to. I would definitely stay here again if we come back. The host could not have been more helpful and friendly.

The Sonata Inn was a great base from which to explore Charlottetown. It's located just a short walk from the main shopping/restaurant area and is also only a few steps from the waterfront in a quiet, residential area.

The guest room and the common rooms were clean and comfortable with nice homey amenities like self-service tea at any time in the common kitchen area. Breakfast was filling and delicious with a warm dish, fruit, fresh-baked goods, cereal, coffee, tea, etc. The atmosphere was friendly as well and we shared many warm conversations with both the owner and other guests. A great place to stay in Charlottetown!

The Sonata Inn is located in a wonderful historic home central Charlottetown. It is located about 3 blocks from the Confederation Centre on a quiet street. It's only a short walk to Victoria Park, which has a boardwalk that runs along the harbour front.

The room was large and spacious. The euro-top beds were extremely comfortable and everything was extremely clean and modern.

The hot breakfasts were very good. The salmon quiche we had on the second morning was very well cooked. They also provide a nice variety of bagels/muffins/etc and a plate of fresh fruit.

My children and I enjoyed this place very much and will stay again when we return to Charlottetown.

My family of four enjoyed two rooms over two nights, and we were very pleased with the charm and ambience, the cleanliness, and great customer service from the staff. We also appreciated that the Sonata Inn is conveniently located within a 10 minute walk of many events and sites in Charlottetown.
We suggest that the breakfast menus need a bit more imagination. Also, where there is space, it would be preferable for the futons to be replaced with bona fide double or queen-sized beds. However, we would be happy to return and to recommend it to others visiting Charlottetown.
