“Great location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 April 2005

I have to start by saying that this accommodation was selected for me, and had I been given the choice, it is not where I would have chosen to stay. Charlottetown has a good variety of inns in the downtown area as well as a Delta Hotel. On the other hand… this property is within easy walking distance of everything that you will really want to see in town, and in summer, parking in Charlottetown can become a little hectic, so this may be the place for you.

It’s an older motel property that once had exterior corridors, but the property has seen considerable renovation over the years and the exterior corridors are glassed in and the original building has been enlarged. When it came time to really expand, a large annex was build across the street and linked to the original property by a pedestrian tunnel under the street… it was well done. As a consequence of modernization, you will find many things that one would expect… there are a good-sized indoor pool, a sauna, an exercise room, an attractive, little restaurant downstairs as well as a pub. (MacLauchlan’s Pub and Eatery).

We were in the annex across the street and the rooms were typical motel rooms… two double beds, television, clock radio, a table with two chairs, a closet which had an iron and ironing board, a coffee maker and a complete bathroom. As a typical motel room, it had the same dreary colour scheme and bed-spreads that one will find in countless such rooms across North America. But… you are in Charlottetown, and we hope that you won’t spend more time in the room than you have to.

The July rate for the room I just described is about $145 CAD. I find that a bit pricey for this property, but I guess it’s all about the location… it is a good one and Charlottetown gets expensive in summer as a lot of people want to experience the restaurants and the theatre. The highways are often alive with buses full of Japanese tourists who come for the Anne of Green Gables tour and the one thing they all have in common is the need for a clean place to stay.

We stayed here in August 2004. Our party had two rooms, but we already had some difficulties getting the rooms at check-in, although we had reserved the rooms well in advance. After receiving the keys, we found the other room to be a total disaster. It was as small as a closet and there were nothing slightly related to a hotel in it. Both rooms were non-smoking, but there was a strong odour of tobacco smoke in the rooms. All the rooms in the new building have connected rooms, but it's a GREAT MISTAKE to accept one of these. There is no sound proofing between the rooms, and the laundry machines are also quite noisy. However, the rooms in the main building are older and in worse shape. The beds were also quite worn out.
The few good things about the hotel were the refrigerator (only in the new building), free parking and good location. Next time I'm going to P.E.I. I'm definetely not staying here. As an experienced Best Western "goer" I can say that this hotel is way below the regular quality.

When we arrived at the hotel to check in at 3:00pm we were told it would be 20 minutes. We were repeatadly told this every 20 minutes for 2 1/2 hours. By this point, the lobby was full of guests all waiting hours for their room. The most troubling aspect was that the staff was very rude and really did not seem to care about any guests.

Our room was extreamly small and desperatly needs a makeover. Not what I would expect from Best Western.

On the plus side, this hotel is in an excellent location but this was not able to redeem the overall poor experience.

This guest at our hotel did not have a good experience and I truly apologize for this. It is difficult for me to reply in detail due to the vagueness of the comments. We value hotel guests who are here on business, especially on government business and I encourage the this customer to contact me directly at the hotel to review what I can do to demonstrate a sincere apology and possible gesture for a future stay.
Thank You,
General Manager

We chose Best Western because it was well known and my previous experiences with this hotel chain were quite good. We booked the hotel knowing that it is a 2 star hotel, so our expectations were not high, but there are some things that need improvement.

We arrived at the hotel on Saturday July 3rd (2 days after Canada day). It was a busy weekend because of all the festivities in town. We booked for 3 nights.

The bad...
- When we checked-in, I asked if there was a complimentary Continental breakfast and the lady responded with "Breakfast was downstairs and runs till 11am". I understood that as a yes. I was wrong. The following morning we went down to the restaurant and when we asked about it, they said that we needed coupons. Then, my wife asked if we can verify this with the front desk. The supervisor of the restaurant didn't seem pleased because we were making her go out of her way and ran up to the front desk to find this out. When she came back, she seemed disgruntled and gave us 2 coupons for breakfast. She didn't elaborate if we did get free breakfasts for our entire stay.

- The morning that we were checking out, the fire alarm went off at around 10:30am. There was an announcement over the intercom in the hallway, but couldn't quite make it out. We started packing up to go out, but the alarm eventually ended and another announcement came which said that it was a false alarm

- We were travelling with our 10 month old baby and needed to keep his food cold to preserve it. So, we brought along a cooler for our trip and decided to just get ice from the hotel to keep it cold. Turns out that both ice machines (one on the 2nd and another on the 3rd) were out of order. We ended up going to the restaurant and asking for ice and had to deal with the unfriendly restaurant supervisor again.

- The hotel room smelled like smoke. We booked and got a non-smoking room, but it was definitely smoked in.

- The bathroom needs a renovation. The bathtub had a leak and you could see calcium/rust buildup in the tub. The tile in the bathroom has never been changed and the floor definitely came from the 70's. It was disgusting!

- We got the basement suite. It made the room very dark. If you ever go to this hotel try to book a room upstairs or on the main level.

- The first night that we were there, there were some teenage kids staying in the room above us. You could hear every footstep they took. Unfortunately, these kids were drinking and up late in the night. We ended up calling the front desk and they took care of it. I'm not blaming the hotel for this, but if at all possible try to book the upstairs level so you can't hear anyone above you.

- Our card keys stopped working after the second day, so my wife went to the front desk and told them that we couldn't get into our room. The gentleman didn't even ask for ID or our names and simply reset them for the room number that she requested. I think anyone could have easily accessed our room if they had a card key.

Some good things.
- The room we booked had one queen bed and the room was spacious.
- Had internet access in the main lobby
