This was a great place to stay-we had a small apartment in one of the cottages, and it was immaculate.I think the staff were the best in any of the ten places we stayed in on our recent trip to Canada, and Julie on the front desk was outstandingly helpful and informative. She also made two dinner bookings for us,both of which were excellent.

Charlottetown is a really delightful small city, and the hotel added to it's charm. All it's buildings were attractive and in really good condition, and the breakfast delicious. Perfect!

We were fortunate to receive an upgrade to a long stay condo about a block from the main property. It did make our experience a bit different from what most would likely encounter in that we had to walk a block to enjoy breakfast or to deal with the very accommodating staff. From beginning to end of a week long stay the staff were unfailingly pleasant. The breakfasts were quite satisfactory. The decor of our condo was very nice and what we saw of the main reception area would make us think the accommodation in main complex would be very tasteful.

Definitely worth staying at this property.

I have been staying at The Great George for the past few years as I am required to travel to Charlottetown on a regular basis for business and have always been 100% satisfied with my stays. This hotel is BEAUTIFUL. I have stayed in both a "room" and a "house" and enjoy both experiences very much.

The rooms are always very clean. I especially enjoy the complimentary "wine & beer hour" at the end of a long work day :) . There are always snacks available such as fresh fruit, muffins, ice cold water as well as fresh baked cookies.

I have yet to take the time to write a review, however I felt this time around I just had to take a moment to mention what an exceptional service we received from Ryan. We returned to the hotel after being there two weeks ago. He remembered us and from the moment we walked in this time (he was also very nice to us last time), he made us feel just truly welcomed. He went out of his way to get ingredients to make us special drinks, he suggested a WONDERFUL restaurant for dinner and even offered to make reservations for us. We were very sad to learn that it was Ryan's last day of working at the hotel, but I wanted to make sure I came on here and shared our latest experience at The Great George, which was without a doubt enhanced because of Ryan. This young man is the definition of wonderful customer service!

Thanks Ryan!

My wife and I recently spent two nights at the Great George. It proved to be, just as advertised, a boutique hotel with outstanding service and comfortable tastefully-furnished rooms. A few improvements could make it truly great:

The hotel is made up of several connected houses. Our room was in the house most remote from the main lobby and breakfast area. There was no way to go from one to the other without going outside which could be a major issue in the middle of winter and wasn't the greatest in a cold windy drizzle.

Our room was on the ground floor with street level windows on two sides. For any degree of privacy we had to constantly close the window blinds. With the blinds closed but with all of the room lights turned on, it was still almost impossible to see anything in the closet where we stored our suitcases requiring us to constantly move them back out of the closet to find or re-store clothing or other personal items. A light in the closet would be a cheap and easy fix.

Breakfast was adequate but served in a lounge furnished only with easy chairs, sofas and low coffee tables which required my wife and I to have to constantly balance and eat food from our laps. Even though the decor is charming, a far more practical approach would be to furnish this area with regular tables and chairs. Additional hot food items and cereal options would be an added bonus. We also found the area inconvenient in that we constantly had to line up to access food.

Room Tip: Request one close to the lobby

We had a very pleasant stay at the Great George hotel at the beginning of September. The hotel encompasses most the houses in a block of the historical center of Charlottetown. The main building blends perfectly with the surrounding that it is hard to believe that it actually is a fairly recent building (from the late 90’s) meaning that that it has all the modern amenities while keeping an historic and antique flair. The hotel is very well located within a few minute walk of all the main attractions of the city including restaurants.

The Great Georges advertises proudly itself as a boutique hotel which it indeed is. You can expect a personalized and friendly service and enjoy a very nice and unique environment both in the public areas and in the rooms. It also means that you have to put up with some of the idiosyncrasies of boutique hotels where the search for uniqueness and flair goes sometimes in the way of practicality. One example is the breakfast which is served in the lounge which is beautiful but not best suited for breakfast with its low tables and comfortable and large armchairs. Similarly the bathroom in our room was lacking a place to put our toilet kits. Most of the amenities including the hairdryer were in a basket on the ground. The room was also lacking conveniently located electrical outlet to hookup your laptop or recharging your electronic devices. I had to choose between the coffee machine and the computer and crawl under the desk to switch cable each time my priorities changed. However, putting up with those idiosyncrasies was hardly a hardship and I will certainly go back to the Great George during my next stay in Charlottetown

We had not stayed at the Great George for a while and this was a nice return visit. Things were mostly as we remembered them give or take a few changes to the lobby which is much bigger now than it was on our last stay. Our room was cozy and relaxing, the feeling we remembered from previous stays, and the bed was very comfortable. The service as always is very good. It is actually less comfortable at breakfast time than it used to be. Eating off a tray on your lap because the seating is basically couches and chairs with low tables is a bit of a challenge. I also remembered fresh flowers all over the lobby on one of our previous stays and it may have been because we were just there for one night this time, but I didn't see any and I missed that grace note. We were invited to complimentary drinks in the lobby on the night of our stay. This was a nice touch which unfortunately, because of our schedule we could not enjoy, but we appreciated the invitation. The Great George is still a very pleasant place to stay. I also love the small courtyard gardens outside, they are so beautifully done and it has always been a dream for me to stay in one of the pretty little houses they have adjoining them. Maybe one day we will.

If you are one of those people who enjoys complaining about service everywhere you go, you won't get any satisfaction staying at the Great George. The staff goes above and beyond to accommodate and do what they can to enhance your stay.

However, things started off on a bad note for us. Due to a reservation error (One Travel is to blame, not Great George), the room we received upon checking in was different than the room type we booked. They made an attempt to switch us to the correct room, but the entire hotel was 100% booked with no other options. We ended up in a basic room with 2 doubles on the 2nd floor of the main building, directly across from the elevator. The room smelled very musty. Everything else about the room was nice, but the odor was an initial turn off. The A/C helped pull the humidity out of the air and later it got much better, but it still lingered throughout our stay.

Breakfast is served until 10am and it is quite good. It's odd, though, how there isn't a comfortable place to sit and eat. The lobby is very nicely decorated and provides plenty of seating areas, but no real tables. Instead, everyone awkwardly carves out spots on end tables and coffee tables to eat breakfast. Either that or you need to hold your plate in your lap.

Moving on to the high points; like I said, the service is top-notch. The staff felt badly about the reservation mix up so they gave me a few bottled beers from the Gahan House Brewery next door (great brewery by the way) and some wine to bring up to the room. Also, fresh cookies are constantly being baked on-site so they fully stocked us on those as well. When I asked about dining at the Claddagh Oyster House later that evening, they immediately offered to make a reservation and confirmed it within a few minutes. The next morning at breakfast we talked to a couple guys on the kitchen/wait staff about our plans for the day. We planned on going to a beach so they gave us pointers on where to go and what to do; plus, they loaned us a park pass to get into the Provincial Parks for free! Then, after discussing options for different plays/musicals showing that night, they offered to purchase tickets for us, charging it to our room, and we found the tickets on our bed upon our return from the beach (along with a personalized note...nice touch).

The location is ideal. Everything you need is walking distance. All things considered, the Great George is probably your best bet in Charlottetown.
