i came here in 2004 and really don't remember it! glad i came again. came with friends who happened to be visiting Montreal at the same time as we were. no information pamphlet to be seen so it was hard to know what we were looking at. i had read the info beforehand so i knew it had been started in 1904, thus had its centennial in 2004. and built with canadian granite and copper. a formidable approach from off the street. attractive gardens. 2 buildings not open at the bottom approach, not sure what they are for. 2 women were climbing up the stairs on their knees when we arrived. a fairly steep climb up the stairs. entrance to the left. no entrance fee. first floor possibly the crypt church. expanded a few times over the years from 1917- 1924. the entire basilica finished in 1967. up the escalators to another worshipping area, don't know the name. beautiful blue lights. amazing view from the terrace on this floor, looking out from the west side of mont royal. cafeteria and gift shop on this floor i think. down a different staircase and out to the "garden of the way of the crosses". fairly steep, numerous statues. a lovely fountain and pool at the top. we didn't come across the original chapel. didn't see the statue of st. joseph. the basilica is described as an art museum, national shrine, canada's largest church, one of the largest domes in the world, has gardens and organ concerts. plus tours and events. I'm sure a number of visits here would sort out what is what. i still was interested in all that i saw.

If you have been to Cathedral in Euro, You will find the architecture here is pretty simple. It is not a wow.
What you have to expect is the view from top and that is it.
The entrance fee is 3 Usd/ pax.

We went to the 11:00 am mass on a Sunday. Climbing the many stairs was a challenge, but once inside there were escalators between the different levels. The service was in English, but it was not in the main sanctuary. It was in the "chapel", which is larger than most churches. A service in Arabic was conducted in the main sanctuary at 11:00 am, which is beautiful. In the chapel there was a echo from the sound system that made it difficult to hear, especially the homily. They made a point of informing the congregation that only Catholics can take communion.

I could have spent another 3 hours here. We walked the Stations of the Cross, and purchased beautiful keepsakes in the gift shop.
