Ideal in the summer to go get a coffee and a croissant at Premiere Moisson at Marché Atwater and sit at a picnic table by the canal.

I like to walk the Lachine canal from Old Montreal to Atwater market.
You get a nice view of the downtown core. There are benches and areas to stop. You can bring a picnic and chill out. You get exercise and it is very relaxing. There are washrooms midway on this route and also an area to rent boats if you want to go on the water. It is very safe during the day, I would not go at night.

Friends took us to the Atwater Market along the Canal, which was full of beautiful flowers, and wonderful food! People were biking along the Canal, and boating along the Canal. Boats and bikes were available to rent.

nice enough walk outside but certainly not beautiful. Very very industrial with lots of noise from big machines-- this is clearly an area for bike commuting, exercise and work not for enjoying the lovely nature. There were weedy patches of grass with lots of trash all around and the canal is basically a very small concrete ditch.

Lachine canal was an industrial park 60 years ago. A nice bicycle path runs by it. It can be busy on the weekends (in PM) but it's a nice place to feel Montreal in a different way. If you go until the end (15km) there is a beautiful marina a park (ReneLevesque) that you don't want to miss.
