Super location. Great breakfast. Rooms are quite tight but clean so the advantages definitely outweigh the benefits ! Huge huge hostel. Well run. Staff v helpful about what to do and where to go and it's location beside the metro is perfect for exploring!

My friends and I stayed here for three nights. The reception staff were unhelpful. No lift or help with luggage. The breakfast catered for my friends, however being a gluten free vegan they did not for me. I understand its not the easiest requirements, but fruit would have been quite okay. The rooms were clean but cramped with luggage. The showers were fine and there were lockers. Wifi was available, but could be patchy at times, but on the whole okay. Location was average. Overall, a good place to sleep.

This hostel has an excellent location in downtown Montreal. If you're coming from the airport the airport bus stops almost outside the hostel. The staff is very friendly and help you with all your questions.

I stayed in the 10-man dorm and the bed where comfortable. Linen is included in the fee and there is also lockers in the room (one for each bed). They have free-wifi that actually reach all the way up to the room. The breakfast is simple but free: bread, juice, coffe/tee and bananas.

Unfortunately I thought the bar would be more crowded at the weekends, but there where only a few people there, and no heavy drinkers.

I liked that they have blackboards with activities that you can do (some that are free). They even have a list of the best bars, restaurants, clubs etc.

Bonjour Daniel,

Thanks for your feedback. I am happy that you had a good stay with us.. As for the bar, it must be bad luck since it is normally quite busy in the evenings.. the best spot to meet other travellers. By the the way, we just launched our «beer pong» game on thursdays... A lot of fun, especially for «heavy drinkers»... You should come and give it a try! ;)

Bon Voyage!

HI Montreal hostel is located conveniently near Lucien L'Allier metro station on the orange line, very near to some of the major streets which intersect the city, and for those arriving by Megabus - just a short walk from the Place Bonaventure metro where the bus drops off/picks up. Additionally Mackay (street its on) has a lot of cool bars/restaurants nearby. Helpfully, the hostel have a board that suggest good local places to eat and drink. Their WiFi was the fastest of any HI I've been to.

All their staff were very friendly and helpful. The free breakfast from 7.30 - bagels, cereal, juice, milk, bananas, was great and a nice gesture was a voucher for 1$ off a cooked breakfast from their in house cafe should you wish it.

I stayed in a 10 bed male dorm and was happy with the room. It felt air-conditioned or at least not stuffy - a pleasant rarity amongst hostels, even though I was on the top floor, and had a big window and communal table for overlooking the city within the room.

The bed was comfortable (linen and towels provided) and I was grateful for the numerous plugs around to charge electronics.

They do have lockers in the rooms. Mine was half broken - locker H in room 301 (the others looked fine), and they are small. It was tricky and noisy putting my quite small rucksack into it. As the room is relatively small though it's hard to think how they could have bigger lockers. Perhaps put some larger ones to share under each bottom bunk which slide out etc.

There was one shower/toilet/sink for the room of 10. There was a bit of a queue at times, nothing outrageous though. Shower worked well, no problems getting hot water.

Overall a very good hostel, good price, would stay here again, and I like what they have done with the renovations. The communal areas and kitchen were good too.

I think I got what I paid for, maybe got a little more since i booked a 4 room and the weekend i had only one roommate. i enjoyed the activities they planned.I liked that it was close to subway and things to do around town. staff were friendly and helpful. my bedroom was clean and spacey. Though the building looks really old and i was disappointed to find out that by "free breakfast" they mean only free toasts, bagels, cereal, coffee and tea. Thought it was free eggs, bacon, etc. But at least the price to buy was reasonable. I would come again.

Room Tip: Bring a lock for your locker and don't expect a very big locker to fit bigger than a backpack...

Hello and thanks for you review!

I am thinking the same as you regarding the breakfast... How great could it be if we could offer eggs, bacon, sausages, pancakes, yogurts, etc. options as well... We do offer it already, but it is a side menu that you have to pay for. Hopefully we will soon manage the costs to pimp our free breakfast buffet to an «ideal breakfast»! ok, now I'm hungry...:)

The hostel is clean, friendly, and well organized. Great price and awesome atmosphere. I highly recommend it. The beds are comfortable, and the rooms aren't over-crowded (6 person room). The staff is also very helpful with traveling tips, and pointing out great spots to visit/eat/etc. Also, great little bar in the basement! Fantastic price on drinks and food.

Stayed February 2014.

The hostel is located on the western edge of downtown, near the Centre Bell. It's an alright place to stay. They were doing some renovations while I was there, careful to not trip on exposed work being done.
The rooms were decent, shower was really quite old with not a lot of hot water or pressure. only real negative I can think of. Lockers are also VERY small, maybe fit a daybag or just your valuables inside. Staff was helpful too.

Also, the train station nearby (Métro Lucien-L'Allier) is crawling with homeless people, I guess there is a shelter(?) right nearby so might be bothered by that.

I would probably stay here again.

Room Tip: Make sure shower works and has hot water
