“Well.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 June 2013

I must say - this place is old. And it looks it. There is no covering up that mess of dated decor and aged everything. I adore antique furniture, this furniture looks poorly kept and battle-worn. But let's move past that. The hotel is located on a hill and wearing our massive backpacks we felt every inclination as we trekked from the airport bus stop to the front of the hotel and it only get's better from here because there are stairs! Oh yes, stairs! I am no stranger to stairs but it can be a bit much especially when you combine that with the uphill location. Be aware.
The front staff were nice and let us know we could access the free wi-fi if we 'liked' their facebook page. Fine. The breakfast provided was probably the best breakfast that we got in all of Canada and they provided fruit all day. It is in a good location with a short walk to the train and about 10 minutes to get to the airport bus (this feels like forever if you are carrying bags and going uphill, as noted above).

I traveled with a group of 6. We took one superior room and two economy rooms. The superior room is really spacious with old looking furniture, high ceilings and large TV. All other accommodations are very basic. The economy rooms are pretty small and it's our consensus that $13 more per night is worth for the superior room.

Hotel appearance/atmosphere - 3
The hotel is an old brownstone building, which is closer to a B&B than a hotel. They have a small dining room for free breakfast (boiled eggs, cereal, croissants, bread, jelly, butter, and fruits). The house has three stories with spiraling staircase. I found the staircase very cool, but it might not be suitable for older folks. As mentioned, the economy rooms are really small and one of them has the bathroom separated. Beds were comfortable. Our rooms had no views.

Service - 3.5
It was a bit of a hassle to get our bookings right. However, the front desk people are really nice and worked it out. They are not super helpful on their own (i guess not their job), but when you ask them for help (directions, maps, taxi, umbrellas) they were very helpful. The cleaning staff, however, were less impressive. They made the bed and changed towels and barely cleaned the rest.

Location - 4
If you are looking to stay in downtown then this is a very good location. It's very close to Crescent street. On the other hand, it's a bit further from old town and the more hip areas such as Latin Quarters, St Dennis, and St. Laurent.

Price/Value - 3.5
The economy rooms are about $100/night and the superior room is about $115/night (after taxes). Given the location most other hotels are in the $140-180 per night range. We found this hotel a pretty good value given the Montreal prices. It offers very basic accommodations, friendly personnel, and an old brownstone feel to it. It could be improved by making sure room maids are more diligent and the hotel is a bit upgraded.

Room Tip: Superior room is worth it over the economy room

Perfect location in a nice brown-stone close to the University.

This is a brief business trip, giving some talks at McGill and Hotel Ambroise seems the standard place for putting up academic visitors.

The staff are very friendly and the wireless very convenient.

We stayed at the Hotel Ambrose for one night in April. We arrived early and were given a room right away. The desk clerk, Francois-Xavier, was extremely helpful in pointing out activities for the afternoon and evening and gave us a map to use for our stay.
The room was very clean and the bed is very comfortable. They provide a nice soap in the bathroom.
Breakfast - hot, fresh coffee, croissants, hard-boiled eggs, and fruit. Newspapers provided.
Close to the footpath that takes you to the lookout on Mont-Royal. Close to Central Station (Via Rail). Highly recommended and we will definitely stay here again!

Okay, let me start off by saying, our trip was a budget trip, and Manoir Ambrose more than delivers! Very nice little place! We stayed two nights, and enjoyed it immensely.

Location: Perfect, beautiful little spot downtown Montreal; close to everything you'd want to explore. Close to the Metro and Greyhound stations.

Service: Excellent!! I loved the staff. The male who ran the front desk (I forgot his name, but he's the only male at the desk anyway) was so helpful and cheerful! They also kept our bags safe for us after we checked out because our bus was later in the afternoon.

Note: This is not an accessible hotel, but the stairs really aren't that bad, and we were all the way at the top.

Amenities: We got the classic room, upstairs. Although a bit small, it's beautiful and clean. Also surprisingly quiet, and I'm an incredibly light sleeper! Very comfortable bed and linens! Clean private bathroom. Beautiful furnishings, very cozy and comfy. Good continental breakfast in the mornings from 8-10:30 am.

The heating was odd and our room was a bit chilly, but not horrible. The shower takes a minute or two to heat up, but there is lots of hot water afterward. The only things I really wish we had was a mini-fridge and tub. It is a quite small hotel, expecting them to fit a tub in is kinda silly; but if you want a romantic getaway with the perks of a tub, this is not the room, (I'm not sure about the other rooms).

I really do wish they would fit in a mini-fridge though. It could work, and would really have made my stay much more enjoyable.

End thoughts: Great place for the Price. I would stay again, but I will do some more research first to maybe find somewhere with a mini-fridge/tub. Great staff, beautiful (for a small) hotel.

We stayed in the Family Suite and found the room clean and comfortable. Close to downtown. Easy access to Metro. It was great that breakfast was included. We wished there'd been more fruit but the croissants were delicious and the coffee was good too. We really liked that we could come in after a day out and enjoy a hot cup of tea at any time. The Hotel staff always had a welcoming smile.

I was able to score this hotel last minute deal from their website. For two nights it was only $115 all in but with no refunds on cancellation. For my purpose (last minute trip to Montreal) it was well worth the value.

Location is perfect. Walking distance to eaton centre, st. Catherine's and a variety of restaurants as well as close to the Metro.

Check in was fast and easy. I was on the third floor so those who have problems with stairs this might not be an ideal hotel. However, the stairs are a beautiful touch to this hotel. I am one who can appreciate the old charm that Montreal has to offer and it's nice to see that there is an effort to retain it.

My room was small, but clean and had a phone, clean washroom with towels, soap and shampoo, clock, iPod docking station, clock and tv. No coffee maker for those who like that amenity, however you do get continental breakfast every morning that included coffee, juice, water, bread, fruit, boiled egg. Just enough to get you started for the day.

For the price, location and cleanliness this little charming hotel is worth a couple nights stay over. If you are looking for fancy and luxury, spend the money and go elsewhere.

Check out was also fast and easy. Very friendly staff including the cleaning lady who greeted me with a smile when I was leaving one morning and she happened to be outside my door.
