Description: Authentic South Indian cuisine is nowhere near as popular as North Indian food in Montreal simply because of shortage, but Kumaresan Muthukrishnan and his wife Geetha are determined to shed some light on the staples as they grew up eating with their restaurant. Dosas, idlis, bondas, uttapams … while these words appeal to South Indians longing for a taste of home, they also arouse the curiosity of Montreal restaurant goers looking to discover new facets of Indian cuisine. Thanjai, Montreal’s first authentic South Indian restaurant, fulfills both these desires. It is comfortingly familiar to the Desi community who have made it their second home. Furthermore, it is the first to expose Montreal foodies to Indian gastronomy beyond the more ubiquitous cuisine of the North. Hailing from the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, Thanjai’s dishes offer Montrealers the opportunity to sample the healthy, vibrant flavours of South India. Favouring the use of different spices over excessive oil, South Indian cuisine satisfies taste buds while minding waistlines! Today a resounding success, Thanjai has a come a long way from its humble beginnings as a 10-seat counter on Victoria Avenue. Since 2012, its more spacious location on Van Horne Avenue has introduced even more people to such delicacies as the tangy Chicken 65, the crispy Masala Dosa, the fluffy idli and the fragrant Hyderabadi-style biryani. It is also the one and only restaurant in North America to offer a 6-foot dosa – and it can be ordered anytime! With enough seats to accommodate 70 and an 80-100 capacity private hall, Thanjai invites you to partake in this sumptuous South Indian feast! Our Features: Bring your own wine and beer (BYOW) - Catering - Coupons & Deals - Groups Welcome - Kids Friendly - Private Functions - Reception Services - Reservations Recommended - Take-Out Food - Wireless Internet (WiFi).

Went there on the weekend for dinner - Sat night. Chose this restaurant b/c I read the reviews on Tripadvisor. Restaurant was busy, glad we made reservations! as soon as we walked in we met Vinki the owner and manager. He was very kind and polite, it tells you alot that when you walk into a restaurant that you have never been to and the owner takes the time to greet every single customer you just want to come inside and enjoy. We all ordered the 4 chicken briyanis and it was excellent - quantity and quality wise. Just the right amount of spice without being overpowering. Parking is also free on the street the weekends after 6pm so that was a bonus. Great service and we all enjoyed our dinner. Next time we are in Montreal, WE WILL DEFINITELY BE BACK! I strongly recommend this restaurant - there is so much variety and choice from meat to to curries to rice to noodles to dosa so if you love indian food this is the place to go!!

“Excellent S Indian Restaurant in Montreal”
Reviewed 11 June 2014

I have travelled far and wide and enjoyed good food and good service in many places.

But, Thanjai restaurant in Montreal is outstanding in every way. It is the best Indian restaurant that I have ever been. The food was great and so was the service. You get good value for money. Besides, the owner/manager comes around to speak to us and to find out whether all is well. I have been to Thanjai a few times last year and I am looking forward to more visits during my next trip to Montreal in mid June 2014. This will be one of my "must do" items!!

“Good food to share between friends”
Reviewed 16 May 2014

We were 8 and order a whole bunch a food to share. The food was good and it is a bring your own wine place so no need to say it becomes a reasonable place to eat out!
The restaurant itself is basic but people warm and service good.
Its 2 steps away from the Metro station so easy to get to for everyone.

“Wonderfully authentic”
Reviewed 12 May 2014 via mobile

Off the beaten track but worth the trip. The only problem is deciding what to pick from the extensive menu.
Our dosas were thin and crisp, perfectly cooked. The generous portion size means you dont really need anything else to make a substantial lunch but the lemon rice was delicious.
Dont bother with the south Indian coffee but a slaty lassi makes a perfect accompaniment. We are already planning to return, prbably for the idlis.
FYI there is plenty of affordable meter parking all around.

“Best Indian Food outside of India!”
Reviewed 14 February 2014

I've been a fan of this restaurant for a few months now and i've never had a bad experience while dining with them- from the great service because of all the friendly waiters who are never too far away if ever we needed anything to the food that is easily customizable and always served hot, a personal favourite of mine would have to be the Dosas, which always amazes my friends at the enormous size of it. It's Indian food that's not only spicy but also well seasoned and has generous proportions, would definitely keep coming back here.
