“Comfortable stay downtown Montreal”
Reviewed 28 April 2014

While I grew up in Montreal, I have not been back since I moved in 2001, though there is not much change to the City itself, I recently went back to attend Montreal Fashion Week and decided to stay at the Sofitel on Sherbrooke street.
The Hotel is clean, service is not over the top, the room was nice, spacious and clean for what its worth.
It is closer to the luxury boutiques (i.e., Holt Renfrew (a Canadian version of Saks/Bergdorfs); Tiffany & Co., etc.) as these stores are along Sherbrooke street, but literally the next block down is the downtown centre, so a close proximity and within walking distance to good ol' St. Catherine street. A famous street known for shops and dining.
During my stay there was a temporary black out, and the Hotel provided complimentary bar/drink service in the lounge area, which was a nice touch. Luckily the black out was temporary and the electricity came back on within an hour or so.

This is a typical business hotel. Nothing to rave about but nothing against it. The crowd is extremely business looking and the staff in the lobby a little intimidating (there are a lot of them!).

Rooms are comfortable and quiet. A great location for a business trip to Montreal. Probably not first choice for a vacation though. Lack of charm.

While on a recent trip to Montréal we decided to treat ourselves to what is supposed to be a 5 star luxury hotel. While many people had great success with this hotel we’ve learned there are some terrible rooms and if you get stuck in one of them your experience, may be like ours where the luxury is in name only.

If your idea of a luxury hotel includes swimming pools, bathtubs, in-room coffee, big-screen televisions, spacious rooms or comfortable chairs will find none of these. The room is very basic, it consisted of a king size bed but barely enough room to walk around it, one chair and a small TV. The bathroom does not have a bathtub, (shower only), and not enough counter space to put down a toiletry bag.

In the morning I enjoy having a cup of coffee and taking a look at the news before having a shower. However in the Montréal Sofitel, this presented a number of challenges. 1st there’s no coffee in the room, the television was not working and there was not hot water for shower. On top of this, the heat in the room was not working. To be fair, the staff was very responsive we had quite a number of calls trying to fix the hot water situation and they eventually allowed us to shower in another room in the hotel that had hot water. By check out time the temperature in the room was quite comfortable. They did offer to send a technician up to repair the television but seeing as neither my wife nor I were dressed yet and it’s a very small room I thought that was just too much intimacy.

When asked about the lack of in room coffee, I was told their experience showed that people who stay at luxury hotels do not like having in room coffee. (Wrong, we do) If we were to follow this through to a logical conclusion, people who stay at luxury hotels do not like swimming, bathing, hot water or heat either.
The staff was very nice and very professional. They were quick to fix whatever they could and quick to apologize for anything that can’t be fixed. Parking at the hotel is $40 a day including taxes.

I have spoken with hotel staff since our stay. They had made an offer to me that if I come back and book the room directly with the hotel , they will ensure that I get an upgraded room which will include a bathtub. While they may consider this a tremendous incentive to return, I have to point out that I can get a room with a bathtub almost anywhere in Montréal, so I do not expect to be returning to the Sofitel.

The purpose of this review is not to trash the hotel, but to let people know that despite many people having very positive experiences at the Montréal Sofitel, there are a number of low-quality rooms that are passed off as superior and somebody needs to stay in these rooms. My advice would be to avoid any 3rd party booking sites such as Expedia, hotels.com etc. and deal only with the hotel directly. If you find yourself being booked into a superior room, go somewhere else. There are many fine hotels in Montréal, and you can have a much better experience for a fraction of the cost and if you do decide to stay there, be sure to bring your own coffee maker.

The service was excellent. The hotel is nicely decorated, very clean and comfortable. They have a restaurant and both the service and the food were fantastic. It is conveniently located near tons of shopping, dining and museums.

This is an excellent hotel. The location is very good; very centrally situated. Rooms are clean and beds are comfortable and they offer proper robes. Wireless Internet works well and they will take pets with no add'l fee.

My only issue is that Orbitz and Hotwire, at least, consider this a 5-star, and it's not IMHO. For the following reasons: 1) Standard guest rooms are on the small side, more functional than elegant, 2) Standard guest rooms do not have bathtubs, only showers.

So while I would wholeheartedly recommend this place, and would not hesitate to stay here again, I'd also keep in mind that there are places I've stayed in Montreal that cost 30-40% less and are almost as good.

Courteous, professional service and a spotless property with great conference facilities and an outstanding restaurant/bar in the lobby. Located close to McGill on Sherbrooke, just steps from major shops, and a short walk to both old town and saint Laurent/plateau.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Sofitel in Montreal. From the moment we crossed the entryway we felt taken care of. Paul, who was working at the front desk, put us in a lovely corner room and sent up a delicious chocolate treat for a birthday celebration. Our room was always taken care of and we appreciated the fresh orchids in the bathroom, Bose stereo, and super comfortable bed and excellent linens. That said, we found the parking fee to be high at $35 plus tax and the $2 fee for local calls a little dear. However those charges can be avoided easily by parking nearby and using one's cellphone. I would stay here again and again and again. Easy to get everywhere by food or metro and so appreciate the kindness and professionalism of the staff.

Room Tip: Get a corner room if possible...Two big windows and a little more space. We didn't have a tub i...
