“Great value, great location, clean rooms, no frills”
Reviewed 10 July 2006

I was looking for a reasonably priced Hotel or B & B in Old Montreal. My sister, (whom I was traveling with) and I are not in our twenties any longer and are not quite up to staying in a Hostel anymore, but we were looking for a great location and a clean and confortable place, although we can do without luxury. Casa de Mateo offered a clean room, with a comfortable king size bed and plenty of space for $92/night. The gourmet breakfasts advertised was a stretch at best, it was a hostel-type breakfast with eggs, croissants, store made muffins, over-ripe fruit, coffee & orange juice. The service was very friendly. Be prepared if you are not french or spanish speaking to communicate with the owner of the restaraunt below (who speaks only french & spanish), he was very friendly & was willing to store our luggage, but the language barrier was a bit of a problem until Octavio arrived to help us out with our reservation. Once he arrived all went smoothly. Be prepared for a somewhat noisy air conditioner and a window that does not open (because of the AC). We visited in June and Montreal was REALLY HOT & HUMID for western Canadians like ourselves, so we were thankful to have the AC and could not have slept without it. The restaurant below (Casa de Mateo) was excellent authentic mexican cusine. The area around this hotel boasts numerous delicious restaurants and beautiful architecture. It is literally around the corner from the Notre Dame Basilica, blocks from the port and about a five minute walk from the Place des Armes metro station. We were able to take the metro from the train station right to Place des Armes and walk the 4 to 5 blocks to Case de Mateo. It was very convenient! I would stay again.

My husband & I stayed at Casa de Mateo recently and were thrilled with the location - it's literally around the corner from the Notre Dame Basilica in Old Montreal; we did a fair amount of research on the internet before going & this auberge was priced substanstially less than many others. Warning, this is NOT a luxury accomodation by any means, it's quite basic, but for the price we didn't care. The cons were that the breakfast was disappointing (go across from Notre Dame to a place we think was called Eggspectation for a MUCH better breakfast!) and that it was fairly noisy, partially due to the Mexican restaurant downstairs (which had always emptied out by around 11pm so this would only affect those who go to bed early) and also to street noise. Also, there was no remote for the T.V. for those who care. On the upside, the manageress was very nice and let us store our luggage all day on the day we checked out and, again, you can't beat staying in Old Montreal! We would go back.

I stayed at this hotel on May 10/11 2006, at the same time the previous reviewer was there. My experience was different. My room (203) was directly over the restaurant. I guess it was a bit noisy, but nothing my aeroplane earplugs could not handle, and it was not open all that late. My room was very basic and spotlessly clean as was the shared bathroom. The bed appeared to be new and extremely comfortable. The management (especially the lady in the Reception Office were pleasant and very helpful as were the Restaurant staff), I was charged as per my Internet booking. The $60 per night I was charged included a nice breakfast of juice, coffee, muffins, croissants, fruit, eggs, and a smiling waitress. It was in a fabulous location in Old Montreal. For $60 a night it was great value. However if you want quiet, a private bathroom and a bit more luxury you can always spend an extra $100 and go stay somewhere else.

The best thing going for this hotel is its location - you can't get any better than the Old Montreal Port area. The rooms are of a large size, and the view from the window was of a cute cobble stoned street. However, the room seemed somewhat dirty - hairs here and there... and the room was only a metre from the reception area (and directly above their Mexican restuarant), so it was noisy. The exhaust fan had to be used as whitenoise.

The worst part about our experience at this hotel, was the bill. We pre-booked (with depoist) on the internet. However we were not charged what we booked in on this particular website - although we did mention this when checking in- we were overcharged on our c/c when checking out. So Beware!!! Very poor act.

I must admit tho, the same people own the Mexican/Spanish resturant downstairs, and the food was pretty fab.
