Hotel Champ-de-Mars
Ranked #138 of 165 Hotels in Montreal
Reviewed 26 June 2013

My husband and I recently stayed at Champ-de-Mars in Montreal. It was very affordable and in a good location within walking distance to the center of town and Olde Montreal, and the Metro. The D-4 at breakfast was excellent with delicious eggs, toast, fresh fruit, potatoes and bacon or sausage with beverage. (Each day, a $3 service fee) We got the package that included breakfast; if you don't, keep in mind they charge a la carte for even a bagel with fruit ($10). I would not recommend the Champ if you have any cardiac or pulmonary issues or if you have any physical handicap, as there is no elevator, and we had 38 steps to the second floor (there are three floors in the hotel). The rooms are extremely small; we lucked out getting a room with a few windows (that don't open) and a larger bathroom. In addition, the customer has no control over the temperature in the rooms. There is central AC, but management controls the temp. We were ok, but at times, it got a little hot (the beginning of June). Staff was helpful at times, but management can be manipulative with money issues; make sure everything is on the table before you arrive and what you are expecting is what you'll get! No pool being an older hotel. Walls are thin and you can hear your neighbors, but this was only a problem a couple of times on the weekend. So if you are young, energetic, and staying in Montreal for a few days on a budget, the Champ is for you! If you can enjoy the beautiful city of Montreal and put hotel worries away, the Champ is for you!

Room Tip: If you can, choose a room with windows in a corner. If you have a hard time with steps and have a l...

Its a renovated older historic hotel and so the rooms and beds are small but they are clean and comfortable and the bathroom was actually a fair size. The lobby is inviting in a quaint sort of way and the restaurant is a very viable option for breakfast lunch or dinner, with friendly service. The best of Montreal for most visitors is the old city "Vieux-Montreal" and its all within easy walking distance,- being that Rue Berri demarcates the eastern extent of the old city which is not all that large,- though it is densely packed with interesting sites. Also, buses do run right along Rue Berri and the nearest subway station is within walking distance, so therefore all of Montreal's modern downtown is very accessible. Wifi is available only in the restaurant or lobby, but the large sofas make it make a comfortable experience. There are no hairdryers in the bathrooms but that's a minor thing if you bring your own.

We stayed at Hotel Champ de Mars for one night in May, including made to order breakfast and dinner for two. The meals were very good and service excellent.
The owners were very knowledgeable and it was a pleasure conversing with them.
This hotel reminded us of “Old Europe” with it’s quaint rooms and décor. Don’t expect a four star hotel at this price but it was good value for the price we paid. Parking is off-site with fee.
The hotel is located only about 2 km. from Rue Ste. Catherine. and Chinatown and easily managed on foot.

Charming, family run, cozy hotel in an unbeatable location. Rooms are small but clean and quiet. Private bathrooms. Air conditioned. The staff was very helpful and the breakfast menu had delicious options. When I travel, I mainly want a clean, safe and comfortable place to sleep and shower. This was exactly a great deal and the location made it very easy to explore Montreal and catch public transportation. It is an older building, so no elevator but charm to spare! I only wish the windows could open.

This 3 storey Hotel is in the heart of old Montreal and within walking distance to vibrant Ste. Catherine St. Our room was small but adequate with private bath. Ground floor contains a bar, bistro and restaurant, serving 3 meals a day. Breakfast was included, from basic toast and coffee to a full cooked meal. A very 'bluesy' atmosphere

Room Tip: Stairs only. 1st or 2nd floor if you have heavy luggage.

It is a nice, clean friendly place, with a small restaurant. It is small and not luxurious, but for the price, it is a great deal. The location is good, a short walk from the village and the old port. Staff was very helpful.

My friend & I decided to escape from Toronto to Montreal as a treat to the end of the college year.My friend purchased her ticket on a deal site that offered an overnight package for 2.She purchased 3 nights. Before arriving she was overcharged for a 3rd person she never confirmed and was stuck with the overcharge on her credit card bill.As she approached the person at the reception desk (OWNER) to explain their "mistake",she was quickly dismissed and told that nothing will be changed, that what was charged would remain and that we should be lucky to even be staying in a hotel for a reduced rate when the room usually goes for $225 per night. The lady referred to us as "you people" by the way (yes we are Non Caucasian ). She told us that we could go or stay she doesn't care. This was done in the presence of her staff and guests. We had just traveled 6 hours by bus and our return tickets were for three days later. To have her condescending attitude blasted in our faces was the lowest point of our trip. Her manager was called in after my friend called the police. He was able to rectify the situation but as i explained her poor customer relations and discriminatory disposition,he informed us that it was her "home" and she has to feel comfortable. What this meant we still have no idea. She was defiant as I pointed out her deficiencies as a hotel owner in the hospitality industry. She said I merely misunderstood her accent.Ridiculous..an accent is simply the way words are pronounced, not the content. We were not shown our rooms and if we had questions staff always replied "I don't know" ,even to the simplest of inquires such as "Is there cable in the room?". It started our retreat on a bad vibe but we were there to have fun and that we did. There were many helpful friendly people in Montreal that sweetened our trip but this hotel with its small old rooms were not worth the attitude we had to endure. We found hairs in our sheets, the floor boards were unstable, the TV was a tiny thing that gave us neck sprains just looking at it.The decor was old ..not antiques...just old, poorly kept pieces of cheap furniture. If I had to pay $225 per night was this room at its regular price I would check out faster than I checked in and run for the Hilton or Delta Hotel.Never again.

Room Tip: Rooms in other hotels would best serve you.

Adam Y, Manager at Hotel Champ-de-Mars, responded to this reviewResponded 1 May 2013

Dear Trip Advisor Reviewer:

We have thoroughly investigated your complaint following your Trip Advisor review dated April 26, 2013.

While clearly you did not have a pleasant experience at the Hotel Champ de Mars we must strenuously object to your characterization that our staff is racist. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, several of our employees and management are not native Canadians and represent many diverse cultures and ethnic backgrounds.

While reviewing the events of your stay at our hotel, we believe you may have misinterpreted certain verbal exchanges, due possibly to your highly charged emotional state. For that we are sorry. We note that when the manager appeared on scene, he was able to address your issues and provided a refund for the additional room charges.

And, as with every guest at our hotel, at that time he made every effort to make you feel comfortable. We, at the Hotel Champ de Mars, try to treat our guests every bit as well as someone staying in our own home. We remain somewhat confused why you find this difficult to understand.

On a final point, we cannot help but notice the 'clever' heading you have affixed to your Trip Advisor review. We are deeply offended by this brazen attempt to sensationalize the events of your stay, which as we have pointed out earlier, may well have been exacerbated by your own comportment.
