“There were cockroaches.”
Reviewed 1 June 2014

The price was right... but not for what you end up getting.

So, I know this is really a student residence but if you're also going to be a hotel you need to do a better job. I've stayed in residence at other universities as it's often the cheapest accommodation in a given city but I would gladly pay more for better digs.

My room had a funny smell that I could not identify. It was musty in the room itself and the bathroom alternated between smelling of sawdust and the plastic shower curtain (it was curiously pungent).

I saw a cockroach saunter across the bathroom floor like it owned the place. I mentioned this to a colleague also staying in the hotel and she said she'd seen several in her room as well. (I will be notifying staff upon check-out.)

The furniture was mismatched, the TV remote was broken, and there was no alarm clock so remember to pack your own. I didn't try out the continental breakfast on offer. There was a grocery store down the street and a mini-fridge in the room.

The drain in the shower also didn't really work. After a 15-minute shower there were six inches of water in the tub. When I left the room half an hour later there was still water in the tub. I let the front desk staff know and housekeeping took care of it.

Staff were friendly and helpful but unless you really need a cheap place to stay in this neighbourhood I would suggest finding another hotel.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms facing av. du Parc. The traffic noise is loud, and in this student-oriented neighbourhoo...

As 2 star hotel's go - this place is pretty good!
OK - this is a student residence by school year, and dirt cheap accommodation by summer. Make no mistake - this place is a bit long in the tooth, and is well worn, but it is clean & quiet, and if you simply need a place to rest your head and have a decent shower - well, this fits the bill. I have stayed in worse 'regular' hotels, and paid a lot more. Location is pretty good - a quick 5 minute walk to the bustling Rue St-Laurent - where there are tons of bars & restaurants. A 7-10 minute walk and you're shopping on St Catharine's. Not bad! Downstairs is a underground mall with a full size grocery store, and a liquor store - that's pretty convenient, and attached parking is $19 overnight - reasonable for Montreal.
The room was fairly large, and had a very large mini fridge which kept my Stela's at an appropriate temperature.
I would stay there again under the right circumstances - namely - not traveling with the Little Lady !!!

The building is old, and parts are in real disrepair and shoddy. The three days we were here the elevator rugs were not cleaned. The lobby area presents well, however, the fourth floor and the room we were in were disappointingly shoddy. The carpet in our room was dirty. The furnishings are dated and a bit scuffed which is fine, the beds were comfortable, the bathroom was a bit disturbing as it is so old that it just feels dirty, although it wasn't. Window coverings shoddy.

The toilet plugged the first night we were here and they were not able to help,us as the maintenance staff does not work at night. We were advised we could use the lobby toilets until the following day when maintenance came back to work. They did not have another room to offer us. I found this to be upsetting.

I felt the rate we were charged at $115.00 a night was too high for the accommodation we received actually. The staff were helpful in directing us about town and were very pleasant. The continental breakfast is basic but plentiful and nice

It was difficult to find this accommodation from the address, but we found it eventually after asking around. The rooms are student quarters normally during the academic year but appear to be let out during vacations. The room we got was large with good-sized desks and working wi fi. Bathroom was clean though ageing, as were the furnishings and flooring. It was quite adequate for our stay, quiet and met our price range. Because it was within walking distance of old Montreal and other major attractions including the restaurant districts, it can be recommended.

Very old (and old fashioned) hotel. The rooms are enormous yet not often clean. My bathroom had yellow stains and the bath towels looked old and not properly washed.
The wi-fi was instead working well in my room.

My family and I stayed for one night (we were supposed to stay for two), a Wednesday, because of the poorly insulated walls and the fact that there were drunk pothead girls who kept laughing like maniacs on our floor hallway (16th floor, highest level in the building). We were also able to hear some kind of sorority gathering with at least 20 people clapping from time to time. Also, the toilet in our room was broken and kept flushing on its own. I basically did not get any sleep that night. I called the front desk twice to complain. The first time they said that they would send someone to quiet the girls down. They kept screaming/laughing crazily so I had to call again an hour later. They pick up and say "oh, you are room XXXX right? we will send a person now". I got pretty angry and said that they shouldn't let regular visitors stay at the "hotel" if this kind of noise were to happen. An hour later they sent a person and the girls were quiet from then on.
Being from the U.S. and having graduated from college two years ago, I guess drinking and being obnoxiously loud is not so uncommon for many colleges. However, (from my knowledge), most U.S. colleges also don't let just anyone (including people traveling in family units and those with small children or elderly) stay where other students are dorming. So if you are traveling with college-age friends, this can be a "cheap" alternative (although my father was able to get a better deal at a better hotel so go figure). But maybe you would not get the quality sleep and experience that you would get paying a little extra at a real hotel.

Stayed for a night while visiting the Montreal Jazz Festival. It is near the action and easily accessible via public transportation. The room was comfortable and quiet. It is not a new hotel, so it's important to keep expectations reasonable. The front desk staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Recommended!
