“Hidden Gem”
Reviewed 21 April 2012

The great food, attentive staff, reasonable prices and BYOB policy make the restaurant a winner. Good choice for a restaurant near the Olympia theatre for dinner before the show.

From the exterior it may not seem like much and the interior is a bit somber, but do not let that deter you. I was a little concerned as I had chosen the restaurant for the four of us (two couples). However, as we started eating, the concerns went away.

We loved the crispy curry beef (we ordered twice), Peanut butter dumplings (fried and steamed), spring rolls are large, and soups are quite good.

We were all stuffed when we left the restaurant and this made a nice start of the evening before the show.

“not quite what i expected”
Reviewed 20 November 2011

came here on the recommendation of our B&B staff. i liked the BYOB policy, and LOVED the salad. husband and i split one - cucumber, carrot, cabbage, with a sweet/sour vinegary dressing and a pile of crushed peanuts - easily one of the best dishes we had in Montreal. sadly, the seafood dishes we ordered struck me as generic Chinese-American style food. too sweet, shiny, thick sauce on chewy squid rings, a few plump shrimp, one lonely scallop, the usual veggies, and pencil-eraser-sized nibs of crab stick. very so-so. saddest of all, upon paying the bill and singing the praises of that fantastic salad, we were told that - due to overwhelming complaints that the flavors are too strong - it would soon be removed from the menu. we were assured that you can still ask for it. and you most certainly should. fresh, bright, crisp, and just what i had hoped for. too bad nothing else came close.

“Yummy and reasonable”

Right across the street from our hotel. We've been here twice -- once in the off hours and practically had the place to ourselves -- another time they were hopping! Wonderful food and reasonably priced. Will go again.

“Amazing value. Second only to Saigon itself!”
Reviewed 15 November 2009

We chose this restaurant for it's proximity to the Theatre Olympia (a block away) and hesitated because we checked out the Google street view and it looked like a "hole-in-the-wall" type joint, but after reading a good review we decided to take a chance. First pleasant surprise: the decor, although not posh or trendy, was fun and bohemian. We started with the General Tao despite our misgivings (this dish varies a lot from place to place but often is very deep fried or breaded). This was easily the best version of this dish ever encountered in Montreal and, as a native Montrealer I have sampled quite a few. Next up, Salt and Pepper shrimp. Again, this is a dish that is subject to quite varied interpretations and often disappoints by being too dry, too salty or not spicy enough. Their version was spot on and again was probably the best incarnation of this dish ever sampled. After this, the Red Curry chicken was a winner. We also asked for a vegetable dish which they willingly whipped up, although none figured on the menu. The imperial rolls were perfect as well. As we had a large group and so we got to sample a lot of dishes. Although they are designed as individual portions with each dish coming with its own portion of rice, who would dream of eating in such an antisocial manner in an asian restaurant? Just tell them you want it "vietnamese style" and it will come in a communal dish with the rice (or vermicelli) in a separate communal bowl as well. No decent serving spoons though, so one must make do with a soup ladel or a regular soup spoon. A little surprise when I got to the cash to pay: Cash only. Oops, I barely had enough, left with not a cent in my pocket left and had to skimp big time on the tip! Be forewarned. Remember to bring your own wine also. This is always a great feature when possible. All in all a great value, probably surpassed only by the feasts I enjoyed in Saigon itself. We loved the place so much we returned a week later and were warmly welcomed by the owner who held no grudge about last week's cash problem. We came prepared this time and gave them a much deserved good tip. If ever we go back to the Olympia we are sure to return (otherwise we rarely find ourselves in this neighborhood as we are devoted heterosexuals)
