“excellent chef, good food, cozy place”
Reviewed 25 February 2012

We were looking forward to Le Grain De Sel experience. We continue to read great reviews about this place and it has been rated Montreal’s number 1 restaurant on Trip advisor for quite some time and so we knew we had to visit. The place is somewhat small and modest and the neighbourhood is an interesting choice. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and take their time to explain the menu in detail.

They start you off with a variety of home made sauces such as ketchup, mayo, butter and home made bread which are all succulent and delicious. Next we had the Spicy steak tartare with home-made potato chips and balsamic vinegar and the Wild boar mini burgers with pickles and a spicy home-made mayonnaise. Our entrees were excellent and well balanced in taste and spices but that being said we feel that the steak tartare wasn’t the best we’ve had. As our main we had the Wild mushroom raviolis and Xérès wine sauce and Parmigiano Reggiano and the Smoked organic pork shoulder, cucumber, King oyster mushroom and dashi which I believe is their signature dish. The Ravioli was exquisite and the mushrooms are probably the best we’ve ever had. Unfortunately we cannot say the same about the smoked shoulder pork, we were not fans of this dish but it could just be personal taste. On a positive note, the chef does take the time to visit your table and enquire about your vist.

Overall, we find the chef at this place is an expert at fusing different ingredients and flavors together and creates beautiful dishes that are different but tasty. We expected it to be a little more than what we experienced but maybe we fell for the hype this restaurant has received.

“Not as good as we had hoped”
Reviewed 19 February 2012

I was really looking forward to this meal after all of the great reviews but was disappointed. The atmosphere was lovely and the staff/ service excellent but our meals were a bit lacking. Our first course, escargot and soup were tasty but both were barely warm. The fish and chips were very good but my main, which was recommended by the waiter, was a skirt steak and it was chewy and had no seasoning to speak of. I wish that I had ordered something else as I am sure that many of the other choices would have been better.

“Great food. Friendly service.”
Reviewed 18 February 2012

Enjoyed dinner here very much. Room is simple. Food is very good. Portions are not too big; so you can enjy an app - fois gras was delicious as well the chicken soup - and a main course without being uncomfortable. Service is excellent. 3 servers floating around, enjoying the challenge of translatng the many ingredients into english. Chef pops by to make sure you enjoyed the meal. Very enjoyable, slow-paced meal. No set seatings so no pressure to leave at a certain time.

“Excellent food”

Although it is a bit out of the way for us, each time we travel to Montreal, we make a point of having dinner here one night. We have not been disappointed yet.
