“Old Town Montreal”
Reviewed 13 June 2011

Our visit to Montreal in September was just perfect. The people are very friendly and all speak both English and French. The weather was cool but comfortable and the city is very clean. We stayed at the Holiday Inn at the edge of Chinatown which is within easy walking distance of the Old Town district and has a good view of Notre Dame. It tends to be very quiet in the mornings in the Old Town because all you the see are the city workers cleaning the streets in preparation of the day. Most people tend to stay out late in the many wonderful bistros there in Old Town. And why not? The food and drinks are great.

“VIVA La Montreal”

Never having been to this great city I did not know what I was missing. Booked a train ticket, yes train and sat back and watched the scenery go buy. Had cocktails and really enjoyed the time. A little long 8 hours from Waterloo, Ontario. return trip however was only 6. As luck would have it one of my many point cards send me an email saying they had hotels on sale. Booked a King corner room at Queen Elizabeth by Fairmont hotels. Great room lots of history and bingo directly above the train station. You hear no noise but literally one escalator ride up to lobby. ASK FOR thE CORNER ROOMS, we were originally moved to be closer to the other couple we were with and got a room very small if they are standard. Corner rooms are a great size lovely bathroom and amenities. There is a pool inside small but adequate and 2 hot tubs gym and spa. Location, location, location, we were near everything walked everywhere. The people are friendly and converse in either english or french. Old Montreal is awesome. took the carriage ride 45 min for 48 dollars no difference if 2 or 6 riders. Got a great history lesson saw all of the core area and you must try the restaurants....all are good .Shwartz's for smoked meat sandwiches, Pio the Italian restaurant was amazing St. Catherine's street always hopping and the Jazz Club has the best entertainment. Everyone should make this a trip on your bucket list you will not be disappointed. sorry haven't downloaded pics yet but will add this weekend

“Great city”

Great city. Clean, good restaurants, great shopping and always felt safe...even at night. They have an awsome "underground world". Found people very helpful. They would stop to offer directions when we looked bewildered on the street corner and were more than glad to help us with our rudimentary french.

“Montreal”
Reviewed 8 June 2011

We visited Montreal for 4 days in May, 2011, so that our son could see some of his favorite bands that were playing at Metropolis on St. Catherine Street. Since the hotels were so expensive (and those that weren't had warnings about bedbugs) we decided to camp at KOA-South which is about 14 miles outside of downtown Montreal.

The best part of our trip was the campground. The Manager was extremely helpful, very knowledgeable, answered our questions, and provided us with great maps.

The last time I was in Montreal was 1980, and I had memories about how clean the city was. This time, I was very disappointed. There is road construction everywhere and related traffic delays. We did not go into the venue "Metropolis," but our son did and he said it was very nice. However, that end of St. Catherine Street was filthy and disgusting. We walked approximately one mile and observed (and were approached) by MANY, many homeless persons, some of whom were frightening. This also occurred during the daytime in other nicer areas of Montreal.

On one evening, our vehicle was approached by a homeless man who banged on our car and demanded that we roll down our window and give him money. Later in the evening, we drove into the parking lot across from Metropolis and stopped briefly to wait for our son to come out of the venue. There was no parking lot attendant, but while we were sitting in our car, a tow truck drove in and stopped right behind us. We got out to tell him we were leaving. He appeared very angry and stomped through the lot checking plates and was only interested in out of country plates. Since we were with our vehicle, we were not towed. Be wary that you don't illegally park in Montreal, if you are from the U.S.

I spent a day in the underground shopping and was NOT impressed. There were no "deals."

With the U.S. dollar weaker than the Canadian dollar, be prepared to spend a lot. Many items are much more expensive and the exchange rate is not in favor of the U.S. dollar. Then, add the Canadian taxes.

There are some lovely architectural aspects of Montreal. At the other end of St. Catherine street (shopping area) apple trees and tulip gardens were in full bloom, and were beautiful.
