“Wonderful stay, great location- skip the bars downstairs”
Reviewed 23 September 2012

We stayed two nights at this hotel for our anniversary weekend. After looking at many reviews, we decided to go with Hotel Port-Royal. We were so happy with our choice - the hotel is in a wonderful location - close enough walk to old town, also close to bus stops, close to the port and farmers market. We walked easily to Chateau Frontenac and also to shops on Rue St Jean which is just a bit farther. These walks have some uphill climbs, but were very easy to navigate and streets are lined with nice shops and restaurants. The Ecolobus is $1 per trip and stops within a block of the hotel and can take you right into Old Town. Wonderful location overall.

The hotel from the outside is in a safe area, right on the border of old Quebec with a beautiful fountain and cobblestone plaza in front. Our room was amazing - room 105 - it's a corner suite room (might have more windows than a non-corner) and looked right out onto the beautiful plaza. Wood floors, high ceilings, old stone walls and wooden ceiling beams, refrigerator with stove and kitchen essentials (wine opener, glasses, pans) center bar island. The bed was very comfortable and clean, as was the entire space. The windows and stone wall added a lot of character and wonderful light. Nice sized bathroom with spacious tub. Since we were on the second level of the hotel, there was a bit of noise. During the day, the street noise was sort of enjoyable...later in the evening, it can be less enjoyable as it is from the bar below rather than people walking around the plaza and cafes, etc. To get a little less noise, maybe you would prefer a room on an upper floor - overall, the noise did not pose a problem at all to us, it was one of our most favorite rooms we have ever stayed - loaded with character, spacious and clean.

Parking is $15/day and "valet" - no one really comes out to greet you (at least at 8pm), so we inquired at the front desk, and were told to leave the keys on the car although it wasn't in a space (the hotel lot was full) and they would move it to an adjacent lot. The valet and hotel receptionist were very friendly about this and all other matters.

The only reason we gave 4 instead of 5 stars was based on our experience at the two hotel bars on the main level. The terraces look so inviting, but as we came back from dinner to have a nightcap at these two bars, we just were not satisfied. The bars are manned by very young people, pours are very, very small. Xo lounge was relatively quieter with a nice jazz duo playing, but still, small pours and very inexperienced bartenders....the other attached bar was loud, trying to be too trendy, servers were attentive but not helpful and definitely not personal (we sat at the bar in both). So we say, skip both of these, save some money and spend it on a nice bottle of wine or make a cocktail up in your own amazing room.

We fully recommend this hotel - you will not be disappointed!

Room Tip: 105 is a corner and is wonderful!

I was so happy I chose this hotel in the old port area of Quebec City. It's beautifully appointed and offered all of the amenities I was looking for during a vacation through the Northeast.

The room (practically a studio) was amazing. Great mix of old and modern style. We took advantage of the fully equipped kitchen and cooked a little bit on the stove. We also used the comfortable sofabed.

The laundry facilities on the second floor were really convenient. Parking is $15 a day in the lot right next to the hotel - very convenient. Although you don't even have to drive to get to the major sites - it's all very walkable to restaurants and shops.

The staff was really great in directing us to good places to visit and getting us last minute dinner reservations in Montreal (Au Pied De Cochon!). They were fluent in English.

The restaurant on the ground floor, LE 48, was pretty good as well. Served good drinks and small bites. They had a lovely patio where we took in the lights of the adjacent plaza. I also highly recommend visiting the Marche du Vieux Port, about a 5-10 minute walk away - great public market with lots of things to taste and purchase. Overall we really enjoyed our stay at this hotel and would go back in a heartbeat!

Located right in the thick of things, you can walk to wonderful restaurants, shops, and to the funnicular that goes up to Old Town. We were there three nights, had a car and never used it. It is a small, recently rennovated hotel with wonderful ammenities including kitchenette with real stove top as well as large microwave & frig. Very soundproof rooms. Wonderful, friendly and helpful staff. Had lunch at the hotel, wondeful outdoor deck and weather was glorious (mid-Sept). I would stay here again in a heartbeat!

The location cannot be beat, walking distance to all of the old city, both upper and lower town. Once the car was parked, it didn't move for the entire weekend. The front desk staff were courteous, knowledgable and efficient. Our room was lovely. The outside walls must have been a foot thick! The kitchenette was well equiped and the clean, modern lines of the decor contrasted nicely with the old feel of the exposed brickwork. We would absolutley stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to stays in the old city, Great value at a very reasonable price!

Loved having a freshly renovated decor of the room.
Love the full modern kitchen in the suite.
Loved the location. In the heart of old quebec.
We even went to the market to buy fresh produce to cook a romantic dinner on one of our two night stay.

Service was average.

Our room was one level up from ground and felt like we could not open up the blinds as we stayed directly at a bus stop and their passengers and vice versa. For that reason, it lacked a little privacy.

The smell of the suite was off putting. It was coming from the bathroom and it was as if the cleaner had used a moldy mop and rags to wash the bathroom. The smell was still there when we checked out. We did not bother to change rooms, as the cleaner would use the same mop, same tags for every clean. They should implement a lemony washing detergent as the smell left behind by the damp mop smell was like bad body odor.

Having said at, we would go back again. I would just bring some room refresher or nice scented candles.

I planned a weekend getaway in Old Quebec with my husband to celebrate his BIG birthday, and we just got back from this charming hotel, which was just perfect for us! Since it was a big celebration, I had looked into The Frontenac, but for the same money, I would have had a tiny room (less than 200 sq ft), and after researching this hotel, I decided I'd best spend my US$ here. If you are looking for a clean, boutique hotel with a great location, then you've found it! Our room was not ready when we arrived early, but they let us park our vehicle (included in our reservation), giving us most of the day to visit all the glories that Quebec City has to offer. Upon check-in later, we were ecstatic over our room. It had what they call a kitchenette, but it even had a dishwasher, granite countertops, and an granite topped island with a bar sink. Our reservation also included breakfast each day at Le 48, an attached restaurant on the lobby floor level. The Le 48 staff was wonderful, and the variety of breakfast combined with the laid-back hours that we could get breakfast (until 2 PM!!!) was fabulous! We are the kind of travelers who like to sleep in, get up slowly, and then eat. No rush-rush-rush.

On another note: We did not see a Concierge, so if you're the type of traveler the needs to have one, I'd suggest picking a larger hotel. There are only 40 rooms on a few floors. I guess you'd say we are no-nonsense travelers, since we didn't ask any staff members for any directions, any assistance at all during our stay, because everything we needed was already there. Wi-Fi was available, although I believe I messed up the password entry area, because I could not get back on after my initial try.

Go and visit the friendly people at Le Port-Royal. I know that we will, the next time we stay in Quebec City!

Room Tip: All rooms are on floors above the lobby level. Try to get one facing the front of the building, and...

I think this was the best hotel for a great price. We chose the two room suite and it was perfect in fact I wish we could have stayed longer. I only have good things to say. This may not be the fanciest hotel in Quebec but it was just what we needed. large room, excellent staff. the Location couldn't be better just foot steps from the Cafe's and galleries of Old Quebec. Loved the time we spent there.

Room Tip: don't bother yourself about the parking directly in front of the Hotel the parking across the st...
