“Good youth hostel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 July 2014

I went there with 4 other friends. The place is very well located, have enough room, and the receptionists are welcoming, knows the city well and gave us very good advices and helped us discover great places (although we already came to Québec several times).

Beware of the dog, that is for sure... The entrance is small so it might be tricky at first to see it.

The beds are plastic (as said in other comments) but sheets are of course given so no problem for sleeping. Anything else, everything looks like a good youth hostel, same quality as HI hotels in general. There is a nice terrace behind the hotel.

Room Tip: rooms on the street side are a bit noisy

The location is good. They didn't receive our reservation from this site. We called in advance, but no returned call. Lucky to have vacant room. Parking is near the hotel, per day about cad15. A supermarket is near, and many restaurants and coffee shops around, too.

Room Tip: The air condition was broken. Luckily, it was cool day, and qe could survive without. The matress...

i stayed in this place in late December 2013. The place itself seemed ok and decent. The building inside is a bit old, but in Quebec city you get that (not that it was a negative for me). The staff were pleasant. The front desk is at the bar, so you have to walk into the bar to check in. We stayed in a double room. It had 2 old couches in it and a desk and a bunk bed. The bed and pillows were not that comfortable. It was all plastic. They probably have this as it is cleaner, but its not very comfortable. The showers were a little dirty. It is only a 10 to 15 min walk to the old part of Quebec city. You will have to climb some stairs and walk up some hills (welcome to Quebec City!). There is a bar and grocery store nearby. We only stayed there for one night. It dont think i would stay there for more than that, simply because the beds and pillows are plastic and uncomfortable. Apart from that, and the shower being a little dirty, every else was ok.

I got charged 2 nights for staying for one. Tried to contact with email, the owner (Pierre) said he would refund it, but he didn't. After 2 weeks I called him on the phone and he answered, after I explained the problem he just hung up on me. I tried to call again three four times the week after looking for explanation, he just simply didn't answer the phone. I am disappointed with the kind of treatment they give to customers, you could find a lot better hostel with a little bit more money.
The stay itself was OK, considering it is one of the cheapest, if not the cheapest hostel in town. Location is good, pretty close to the old town.

Firstly, we booked to stay at La Belle Planete because it was the cheapest. It's the reason we book most of the hostels we stay in. We've stayed in lots of places and they all have their pros and cons. Here is no different. It's cheap, it's location isn't bad and Quebec City is so small you can walk round it from there. The girl on reception (who seemed to be the only one and was there all day and all evening) was quite nice and helpful.

The cons however were greater; the rooms aren't very nice (again for the cheapest hostel not such an issue and quite common). The beds, though, were pretty terrible. The mattresses and pillows are all made of plastic, the kind you give to young children who wet the bed. It really wasn't very nice and while I slept on it no problem, it's pretty horrible and clinical. Breakfast is included and when we arrived we saw lots of it. When we woke up every morning for it, however, there was none. Every morning.

One morning we were eating breakfast (our food) when the owner came out with his dog. There are things I could say about his appearance and personal hygiene here but I won't. The dog though is not friendly at all. When my pet-friendly girlfriend tried to stroke it, it growled and tried to bite her. We left it alone after that until the day we had to check out. It wandered downstairs to the door we had to leave through. As we opened the door slightly the dog tried to get out and we tried to block it's way but it seemed pretty intent on escaping. Not wanting to release it we decided to try and move it, causing it to go mental at us and in the end we had to dash, bash and crash our way out the door with it snapping at our heels. The response from staff was "Oh, did it bite you?" Decide for yourself whether this is a common occurrence.

This is the first review I've ever written and the reason I'm starting now is after my girlfriend wrote a review of it on hostel world (giving it a reasonablish 57% considering) the owner responded with insults. We gave honest reasonable feedback, and he insulted us. Looking at other reviews this is not uncommon. Decide for yourselves whether you want your money to go to someone like this.

THERE ARE OTHER NICER HOSTELS THAT MAY BE A LITTLE BIT MORE EXPENSIVE, BUT ARE OWNED BY SOMEBODY WHO ACTUALLY DESERVES YOUR MONEY.

This hostel was a relaxed, and friendly place, the atmosphere was casual and welcoming. Providing a map with details of all the things to see and do in Quebec was really helpful and a nice touch. The location was great for getting to the Old Town and was close to good bars. The rooms could be warm at night, but Quebec can get very hot in the summer.
