I really enjoyed staying at the B&B St. Louis in Quebec City. It has a nice and desirable location inside the walls in the upper city. Near everything. People were impressed that I was staying in such a desirable location. In the historic district! A few blocks from the chateau.

The best part of staying at B and B Saint Louis is the hostess and her husband. They are so pleasant and friendly; they want to make sure you get out and enjoy Quebec City.
They told me about seasonal festivities, and how to get around town and out to the Montemorcy waterfall using public transit instead of expensive tour buses.

Breakfast was excellent. Homemade pastries or crepes; a different breakfast every morning with fresh made juice and a cup of the fruits in season. That's what they mean by a healthy American breakfast!!! SOoo true.

There was a microwave oven and mini-fridge for guests to use. Shared bathroom. Sinks in each room. No problems there. The rooms were spotless with nice bedding. (I peaked into the other rooms).

The building is modest with modest prices. Can you say affordable??!!!

I loved this place, and I hope to return as soon as possible.

You can't get a much better location than this. The B&B is within Old Quebec and within blocks of everything.

Not only was the location great but we had a wonderful time with our hosts. They made it feel like you were staying at a friend's place and made you feel at home. Breakfast was great and an awesome time to meet everyone else at the B&B. Starting the day with great food and excellent conversation made the rest of the day more enjoyable.

The room was clean and had everything that I wanted especially given the great value for money that this B&B is.

Others on Tripadvisor seem to want 4-star hotel service from a mid-level B&B. If you care about location, B&B hospitality and feel, excellent breakfast, clean rooms and a friendly host this place is for you. If you want a newly renovated space with all the amenities and services of a hotel then pick a hotel and pay twice as much.

We personally loved our stay and will be back to stay here again.

Room Tip: We had a room with a private bathroom and loved it.

No complaints whatsoever; hosts were marvelous, breakfast was very good, and bedroom was comfortable. Worth the money.

let's start of with the good side of this bnb. The location is superb. within walking distance to Chateau Frontenac. Very strategic, and you really really cant complain on the location.

The breakfast was good. we stayed there for 2 nights, different breakfast everyday. Previous reviewer has describes the menu very well. i have no complains on the breakfast, and frankly, i quite like them.

now comes the less favourable points. the room conditions - it's old, has an odour (tolerable, not that bad, but it's there). the furniture is sort of old. no tv in the room. the room condition is very basic. we had shared bathroom with very basic functionality. The previous reviewer said it all. the whole bnb as a whole, is quite old and requires renovation.

i am not sure how the previous revierwer manage to get internet access. I was told by the owners that there was no internet service.

My boyfriend came down to visit me over Thanksgiving weekend while I’m here working for a few weeks. We made a reservation here a week before the stay; phone reservations are more effective and quicker than email. The price for the very end of high season was $85/night, plus taxes.

The location: The location is excellent, right at the gates into the city on Rue St Louis, which turns into Grand Allée just outside the gates. The Plains of Abraham are a block away, and the street is lined with little, if expensive, restaurants. There are a few good nightclubs within a few blocks, and there's a small grocery store ("épicerie") not too far away - turn left out of the doors and take the third left.

The service: The owners are middle-eastern family that speaks accented French and little English. We had to ring the bell to get into the place, and the young man answering the door looked a bit confused at our arrival. We were shown to our room, and left with the key. They didn’t tell us how to get a hold of them if we had any problems or questions, and had to go look at the front door to get the phone number; we figured out later that they live on the first floor. We were not given the password to the wireless internet and had to call and ask. The man who answered the phone wasn’t quite sure, nor did he know what case the letters should be in. An older man who did not identify himself knocked on our door on our second evening when we were watching a movie file on our computer to tell us that we shouldn’t watch movies because it was very expensive for the internet…I guess he thought we were on YouTube. Either way, the internet was cut off when we awoke the next morning. There is no in-room temperature control – we had to call to have them turn on the heat, which they did for a few hours; we had to call again the second night (night-time temperature reaching 2 degrees Celsius according to weathernetwork.ca). Upon checking out (we had to call to find out when it was), we found out that it was cash-only payments and had to go in search of a bank.

The house: The house is very old and has high ceilings, but is in need of repairs. The house has an austere and cold feel to it – there are no decorations, aside from pictures hung at odd locations to cover chunks missing in the paint, which was noticeably cracked. The wallpaper was peeling and stained in areas. There are no carpets in the rooms or on the landings, and there is no soundproofing between rooms; you can clearly hear people talking and climbing the stairs with your door closed.

The room: The room had two beds, a queen and a single, and we were told we’d be charged extra if the second bed was used. There was no TV, though one is promised on the website, nor was there a phone. There was a bar fridge out in the hallway we used for things like drinks and restaurant leftovers; it had some fruit in it that looked to have been there for awhile. The towels were a bit ratty, unmatched, and smelled slightly mouldy. The comforter on the bed had a faint but persistent scent of old hockey gear. The queen bed was extremely soft, a pillow-top, and was lined with the kind of plastic sheet you put on kids’ beds when they’re potty-training. The walls were white-washed and completely unadorned, save for a small print of the Mona Lisa in a chipped frame. The closet consisted of two hooks in a 6”-deep recess in the wall behind the door. We had one of the few rooms with a tiny private bathroom, which contained a stand-up shower, toilet, and tiny sink. We were provided with a hair dryer and hand soap, but that's it. The shower was a good size and the water pressure was good, and we had no problems with running out of hot water. There is a noisy fan, as well as a vent from the shower into the room. The rest of the bathroom was the same size as the shower. The electrical outlets are standard North American 15A sockets (type B), but a few had no grounds (type A). The room had a funny smell to it, which disappeared after a few minutes, and the window looking out into the back alley area opened easily.

The meal: The food is good, if nutritionally unbalanced. The table can accommodate eight people, but there was only one person serving, so try to plan breakfast around that of others. They won’t ask about allergies or dietary requirements, so inform them. We didn’t appear to have any choice in the menu, which changes depending on what morning it is of your stay – literally, the people next to you may be eating something completely different. No is meat served. The first day menu consists of what can only be identified as either an exotic pancake or a poorly-made crepe – the batter was very bubbly, and the pancake itself was extremely thick (at least 3 crepes worth) and only cooked on one side, though it tasted like a regular crepe. There was only jam, butter, or real maple syrup to add to it. The first day also saw an un-sliced toasted sesame bagel, a small glass of fruit juice and a small cup of fruit salad, all homemade. I asked for a glass of water and was refused, given the juice instead. The second day, you get a cheese and two-egg omelette with three slices of fresh tomato, along with a small cup of homemade (I think) plain yogurt, a different fruit juice, and a bun topped with poppy, sesame, and anise seeds.

we arrived late afternoon and no one was there, but the husband quickly arrived to let us in (he drives a taxi)
the room itself was basic but had a tv, heater, double bed and single bed. Very spacious, and also had a sink. As we were next to the bathroom we were lucky, though the fan was a little noisy through the wall.
The breakfasts were wonderful - juice, fruit/yoghurt/coffee/home made bagels/bread, and crepes/omlette/quiche. No choice, but plenty of what was there. Something different each day, and all home made. Madame Balti was an excellent host, bi lingual, and with lots of info on the local tourist spots. The only down side was they could do with re decorating the bathroom, but apart from that it was very good value for money. We have paid a LOT more for a LOT worse.

My husband and I traveled to Quebec City with some friends and spent a few nights at the B&B Saint-Louis. When our friends booked the two rooms they were told we would have private baths and wireless internet. We did not have either. The owner also never told us that he only accepted cash so upon checkout we had to leave one couple at the hotel while the other ran to the ATM. The breakfasts were not filling and we all hit local cafes for a snack about an hour after leaving each morning. The B&B was also in need of repairs. Holes in the wall were covered by pictures and other walls had large cracks running up them. The towels we were given had seen better days and in my house would have been sent to the basement to line the floors when we paint.
