“Quirky!”
Reviewed 4 November 2012

Normally one expects to be greeted by one's host - but not at Castel!. When booking, you receive an entry code which allows access from the road to an inner lobby. Her one finds a named envelope with keys inside - one for the inner door, one for your room. So you don't get to see mine host(ess) until the breakfast!
If you are planning to come here by car, be aware that there is no on-street parking and the official car parks near by cost an arm and a leg.
What can I say about the house? You will either love it or hate it! The bedroom we were inwas HUGE, with a large double bed (very comfy), a large settee (bed settee?) various tables and chairs. But the bathroom was poky. Why wasn't this extended to the small dressin-room adjacent, which served little purpose other than housing a fridge. Decor was mind-blowing - it was like going back over a hundred years. Not so much antique as simply old-fashioned.
The breakfast room was rather cramped if everyone ate together. On booking, a breakfast time is given - but it is doubtful if anyone took notice. So we (a party of four) found it advisable to arrive by 8.15. The food is buffet style, with ample choice (but short on fruit/yoghurts) - but getting at things was awkward when the room was full due to the lack of access. It is possible to make oneself a hot drink at any time, as the kettle and facilities are always there (you may need to fill the kettle yourself in the kitchen down the corridor), which is good.
Being in the old town, it is very convenient for most things (shops/restaurants).
Staying at Castel was an experience. The comfort of the beds and the quality of food are real plus points - but the decor is an acquired taste! If you plan to stay, note the comment above about car parking.

Nice hostess and staff. Good location. Lovely suite. But, the staff is family of owner and is reluctant. Location is not that important, given how small (and walkable) the City is. Breakfast was adequate. Pastry was frozen-defrosted. In 7 nights, there was no regular cleaning of the room, or making of the bed. I had to ask (and only bothered to do so twice), to have the room attended to. In a week, the kitchen trash was never taken out. I eventually did some cleaning on my own, but at this price, that is absurd. Also, the bathroom mirror is useless for anyone taller than 5 feet.

I absolutely LOVED this place! There were a few problems, but all in all it is absolutely gorgeous. Careful while unloading luggage as there is no place really to park on the street. My Aunt and I parked the car in front of a dumpster with our hazards on to unload and while we were unloading our stuff in the rooms somehow the dumpster was set on fire. Fire trucks came and we moved our car out just in time before the fire truck would've broken windows to quench the dumpster fire. It was a little unnerving. There are quite a few stairs and the place is NOT handicap friendly. Fortunately for us we were given a room on the second floor so we only had to climb one flight of stairs. This was difficult with 3 suitcases though. My 82 year old grandmother was able to do it, but if you are traveling with elderly individuals there is one room on the main floor you might want to ask for. Our room was really what made this my favorite place as it had a huge ceiling, a chandelier, bathroom ensuite and an extra room to do makeup in etc. It also had a view of the Hotel Frontenac which is lit green at night. The breakfast room was very crowded in the morning and the food is simply okay. You do have to pay in cash which I thought a little odd, but the B&B owner makes sure you are aware of that before coming.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the ground floor or first floor as there are Many stairs if you do not.

We were given the code to enter the building and information regarding our car. On entering the building there was an envelope with the key and information giving you the location of your room etc. Then you opened the second door........... And a beautiful entrance and passage welcomed you.
Our room was through the kitchen and out the back (ecurie - stable I think) was magnificent. The bed was very comfortable, the room well furnished with paintings and antiques etc.We had a private bathroom, a kitchenette, and a mezzanine floor with another double bed.
The breakfast was everything you could wish for. Cereals, fresh fruit, cold meat, cheeses, a different hot dish each day which was delicious, toast, preserves and a sweet cake.
The location was so handy to restaurants and the sights of the old city.
Would thoroughly recommend this accommodation. Only one thing that is worth keeping in mind is if your room is on the second or third floor whether you can manage your luggage up the stairs.

Room Tip: Ask location of room

While looking online to find a place to stay for our 3 nights visit to this area, there were so many B&B places to choose from that the choice was difficult. After reading so many nice things about this B&B, I decided to rely on the comments made from others here on T/A and booked here. Great idea. As is always mentioned, the location is the best advantage but what is that unless you are happy with the place itself? Well, let me say that this place has so much character and unique rooms that staying here is an adventure in itself. Quiet, clean rooms with hosts that will happily answer any questions you have about the area or needs.
Then there is this breakfast that is put out every morning. If i did not live 500 miles away i would consider coming here every morning just to eat. Wonderful spread of cereals, fruit, breads, baked goods and casseroles...MMMMMMMMM.

Room Tip: if health issues prevent you from walking too many stairs, ask for a room on the first or second flo...

I booked this property because my 15 year old daughter is going to France and we wanted to give her a chance to experience Quebec City and use her French. The rooms are large and very comfortable. The only complaint I would have is that there was lingering cigarette smell in the room which I did not like. However, the room was enormous, the breakfast was delicious and kept us going all day. They served quiche, croissants, cheeses, tarts, sausage, cereal, fruit, nuts, coffee, and tea. It was a very rich breakfast. We did not need to stop for lunch. The property is a few blocks from the Chateau Frontenac and there is a lovely terrace that overlooks it. Rue St. Jean is a few blocks away with many shops to visit and places to eat. I would highly recommend this centrally located B & B

Room Tip: The Chateau Frontenac room accommodates four easily and has a large bathroom. It is also close to th...

This B & B is in a great location in Quebec City within easy walking distance of a number of restaurants and shops. However, the long, narrow staircases are difficult to navigate with luggage. Also the room seemed a little worn with chipped furniture. The continental breakfast was fine but the breakfast room was small and crowded. And you must pay cash for the rooms, no credit cards are accepted.

Room Tip: If you have luggage ask for a room on a lower floor.
