“Location, great staff and accommodations”
Reviewed 16 August 2014

Great location in the midst of Old Quebec. Recently renovated the hotel was full. The staff very friendly and helpful.
Two caveats if you have trouble with stairs. Make sure your room is in a level where the elevator stops. The hotel has rooms in levels in some floors where, after leaving the elevator, one has to go up or down stairs to get to the room. The Champlain restaurant also has two levels so ask for the level with no steps.

Fairmont Frontenac is the perfect location for exploring Quebec City.
Fairmont Gold was wonderful- Simon was fantastic!
The Fairmont is a gorgeous historical site!
We were fortunate to experience fireworks on the St. Lawrence River and a parade in front of the hotel as the city celebrated the Founding of New France.
Thanks for the memories!

This is by far my favorite hotel. I stayed there recently for a friend's wedding. I was very impressed with the superior customer service at the front desk and the concierge. I will definitely go back!

Plush, clean, wonderful hotel in the perfect location. My only real complaint is the cost. There are many smaller hotels within a block or two, which we will look into if/when we come to Quebec again. Loved the city and being in the middle of it all.

Dear gmumba,
Thank you for taking time to post feedback of your recent stay. We are pleased that you enjoyed your overall experience. The Chateau is the only full-service property located within the historic walled city and provides additional amenities not found in smaller hotels such as indoor pool and jacuzzi, restaurants and bars, Concierge services and much more. We hope you choose to stay with us again on your next visit to Quebec City.

Hotel is beautiful inside and out, and really quite perfect. Beautiful shops in the Libby, fantastic restaurant overlooks the river with a beautiful view. Furnishings in room are nice but not spectacular -- modern, not ornate. Would have liked more than two creamers in the room as I take two with each coffee. Extra creamers and complimentary biscuits would have made the stay perfect. Check in and out is a breeze and the bellhops are fantastic. Hotel is in a great location.

Located inside the wall of Old Quebec City, The Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac is tough to miss. It towers over the most interesting part of the historic section of the city. The drive into this part of Quebec is very scenic, but have patience, because the traffic is bad.
Pulling into the courtyard of the Fairmont is a very active area, but the Valet’s did a great job of checking our car and unloading our bags. Parking fee was $20, which was a pleasant surprise.

The check-in was tedious and reminded me of check in at the “Magic Kingdom" in Orlando Florida. I'm a Presidents club member, but I didn’t feel too Presidential. I have a suspicion that my desk girl was new, because she seemed overwhelmed. After 15 minutes of waiting for her to make eye contact with us in front of her, she was cordial and gave us a key, although she forgot to tell us breakfast was included, which would cost me money the first morning, poor details.

The next issue was with the room, the front desk tried to put us in a room that’s in a construction zone. It seems obvious to me, that if the courtyard is being renovated and scaffolding is up, that those rooms should be vacant until finished. Why would Fairmont put a Presidents club member in a room where I saw that backside of a construction worker and his unsightly water cooler? At the daily rate of this property, this should never be a selection for the front desk. To their credit, they gave us another room, this one with no view, but that’s OK, there’s also no noise, which was fine with us.

Next we get the bell service to deliver our bag, and the bellman gave us the “bum’s rush”. No Ice, no orientation, like “free breakfast”, or “here’s the thermostat” or anything. He was tipped accordingly, very little, and sent on his way.

But the room was nice and roomy, unfortunately the Iron didn't work, however, so far,we’re irritated by the service and the disrespect. BUT, there’s more to come.

After settling in, we went to dinner at “Le Continental” (see Tripadvisor review), then came back for a nightcap at the 1607 Bar……or so we thought. The bar closed at 11 and we got there at 10:45 and we were told coldly by the receptionist that “last call” had come and gone. We were surprised, we only wanted a drink and with 15 minutes to closing it sounded like someone wanted to go home, or that the staff was lazy.

We tried again the next day around 3, but were told that the wine bar didn’t open till 4. Great job 4 to 11, that’s not a serious bar, that’s a hobby. Anyway, we came back at 4:10 and the place was PACKED. We were placed in an awkward corner and looked at the menu. Hmmm, the place billed itself as a wine bar, only one problem, they had no wine selection. Also, we tried to order cheese and they had no cheese selection, only prefix the chef wanted to serve. 1607 has crossed over to the WORST wine bar in existence. We would have left then, but our server Maxim, soothed things over and the manager came over and pretty much admitted to us that they were worst wine bar in the world. All he offered is to make reservations for dinner at Champlain. That’s it, nothing more for guests who had been jerked around for 24 hours.

OK, so the great service by Mr. LeClare for a reservation was at 7. We arrive a little early and stand in a procession that entered the 2 restaurants and the “wine” bar. For some reason, all guests go through a gauntlet of girls and velvet rope to go into the eating and drinking establishments at Fairmont. Now, this might not be the dumbest ideal implemented by a hotel, but it’s the dumbest one I’ve ever witnessed. People WITH reservations and those without stand in the same line. It’s Studio 54 velvet rope waiting to be allowed to enter. The girls at the door did not have the skill to handle this kind of system. They were too slow and as witnessed the night before, not adept at handing the interpersonal part of the job with guests. No motivation to go the extra mile.

Anyway, the Champlain itself was good (see Tripadvisor Review), but we were done with the Fairmont “amenities”

The next day, we had to call twice for bell service. This with the fact that I had to call twice the day before for a working iron. Service was indifferent at the Fairmont and they weren’t as classy as they try to portray.

True, they’re in a great location and it’s a stylish historic hotel, but the service and amenities do not warrant the room rate that they command. Don't buy the hype, This property gets 2 stars for location only, otherwise, it's a ONE.

Room Tip: Stay away from the courtyard rooms. They have a construction project going on.

We had a fantastic time here and our stay at Le Chateau was truly enchanting! Expensive, yes, at approx. $400/night (including $32/day for parking) for a regular room with 2 double beds but since we paid over twice the amount at the Ritz Carlton in Paris, this is worth every penny. While, of course, this isn't Paris, we actually had an excellent time in a very 'French' atmosphere. I had a very rude, negative experience in Montreal, a few years back, so I had resisted returning to Quebec, but now, I wish I had returned earlier! Why did I wait so long?

We were met by the most fantastic valet/porter on arrival. It was late, but this young man took
care of everything! First impressions are SO important and we were not disappointed. Not only did
he unload all of our baggage, show us to our room, hang jackets in the closet and get us extra
luggage stands but he even filled our ice bucket for us. Now THAT is service. Oh, AND he spoke
perfect English since we are from the states. He even warned us that if you remove anything from
the mini-bar, it is equipped with sensors that initiate a room charge for things removed for more
than 30 seconds. This includes the wine and water on the counter top as our daughter had
removed one of these items. Yikes! Good to know with kids along.

ROOM
The beds were premium quality with crisp cotton down duvet covers and sheets. We slept very well with the room darkening shades. It was very quiet with no outside room noise tho' the air
conditioning fan was loud, we got used to it after the 1st night. Our room was on the 8th floor with
a view of the inner courtyard. The amenities in the room included a plush robe, thirsty, large towels, shower cap, hair dryer, shoe-shine cloth, and Rose 31 brand shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion as well as hand and body bar soaps.

POOL/SPA
While we didn't use the spa facilities, the entrance is adjacent to the pool so we were able to see inside. It looked lovely. We went to the pool on the other side of the hall, however, and it was very nice. There was lap space for 4 and open area for the kids. A hot tub was connected on one end as well as a shallow, square pool. The attendants were very polite and helpful. The most amazing feature of the pool area is the rooftop patio that is open in the summer. There was an ample number of lounge chairs and tables and the VIEW from the 6th floor was spectacular! From the river to the neighboring clock tower and village below...WOW! This is the major 'guests only' location in the hotel and the best perk. Loved it here!

RESTAURANTS/BARS/SHOPS
There are 3 restaurants/cocktail lounges in the hotel as well as a Starbucks in the basement. There are also banquet facilities which were not in use while we were there. We had most of our meals in the smaller establishments in Old Quebec surrounding the hotel but we did enjoy a cocktail, apart from tne kids, in Sam's Bistro.

All in all, this was a truly memorable vacation and the castle experience did not disappoint. I highly recommend a stay here, right on the St. Lawrence river near the Citadel and in the heart of Old Quebec. Tres bonne!!!

GROUNDS/LOBBY
Everything here is immaculate! The pictures don't convey the beauty of this gorgeous castle. We were blown away by how well the Fairmont has maintained the elegance while keeping things clean and updated. My ONLY complaint is the throng of outside visitors that descend on this place throughout the day. Of course, I don't blame anyone for taking the opportunity to view this landmark but they should take a clue from The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island and charge $10/person for non-guests. The Grand's system is not perfect either, however, since even tho' we were Grand guests, I got tired of being questioned as to whether or not we were. There is no perfect solution, however.
