My family and I stayed at the Hotel Clarendon for 4 nights. The hotel is the oldest in Quebec City and the small room size reflects this. However, the room was very clean, tastefully decorated and the beds were very comfortable. Location was great; 2 blocks from the Chateau Frontenac, the Promenade, bus tours of the city, historic sites and dozens of restaurants and cafés. Our stay included the buffet breakfast which was ok but the options did not change beyond the fresh fruit, 2 types of pastries, bacon, sausages, scrambled eggs and chewy crepes. Internet was painfully slow even at "off peak hours."
The staff we encountered were all friendly, bilingual and patient with our attempts to speak French.
Overall a very nice stay.

After I booked the Hotel Clarendon, I read in a guidebook that the jazz performances in the ground-floor restaurant could make for loud acoustics in the hotel. Since we were looking for a quiet place to stay in the old city, I was worried about this description, and asked for a room away from the restaurant. We were placed on the 6th floor, where It was extremely quiet, and we had a nice view (though there's only one window in the room, an oval shaped one).

We had a standard room with two queens for a family of four, and though it was hard to find places to put all our suitcases, we didn't feel cramped. (There were plenty of bureau drawers, but we weren't staying long enough to use them.) There's a small sitting area in the corner, next to the window, and there's much more space than in a standard NYC hotel, for example.

The beds were firm and comfortable, and the pillows and comforters were wonderfully soft. The a/c was quiet, and we all slept well. Although the hotel is right next to a busy corner, we didn't hear any street noise. The bathroom was updated, but with old-fashioned faucets. The water pressure wasn't great, but it wasn't a problem.

We used the valet parking mostly because we arrived late on a rainy night and then didn't want to bother moving the car the second day. But the City Hall parking is right across the street and would have been very convenient if we hadn't been so tired. (There's an underground walkway connecting it to the hotel.)

Since the Internet connection on the 6th floor was extremely slow, we sat in the lobby to use our laptop, and greatly enjoyed the atmosphere there. We were able to hear and enjoy the jazz singer in the restaurant next to the lobby, but contrary to the guidebook I'd read, the acoustics were not a problem.

The staff were always friendly and eager to help. The reception staff all speak English perfectly, but the maids could not, so it helps to know at least a little French to communicate any needs to them. I found that they rely on whether you have the door card saying "Do not disturb" or "Please clean the room," because the maid knocked on the door (around 8:30 am) when we didn't have the card in. The room was spotless, and ours was tastefully furnished with cherry wood furniture and white bedding.

Although there wasn't a refrigerator or microwave in our room, we were mostly in Quebec to enjoy the food. When we wanted to spend less on food or drinks, we went to the epicerie (convenience store) on rue des Jardins, where you can buy fresh fruit; they have a microwave for dishes they sell such as pasta, sandwiches, etc.

After checking out at noon, we were able to lock up our bags until late afternoon when we got our car to leave Quebec. We would love to come to the Hotel Clarendon again, and are happy to recommend it. (Although we traveled as a family, I think it's a romantic place for a couple to stay.)

Traditional hotel in excellent location for walking to sites in Quebec City. Lovey art deco lobby. Beautifully maintained older hotel with rooms updated and redecorated over the years so not all are the same. Ours was generous and well-equipped. Stayed here with a tour group but will definitely stay here privately in the future.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front on the top two floors (5 and 6?) at the front have a nice view.

I booked this hotel a month prior after consulting those in the know on TripAdvisor's Quebec City Forums. They did not steer me wrong. We were in town for the Paul McCartney concert. My first time driving in old Quebec....we were running late...lots of pedestrians making their way to the concert and got I turned around trying to find the hotel because streets were closed off. I am sure I was called something very interesting by a Quebec taxi driver who hollered and honked as I made a u turn.

Well, we got there. Our car was tucked away by the valet, which was appreciated. Front desk staff tried to hurry things up, knowing we still had to walk to the concert. So in two snaps of your fingers, we were in our hotel room and left soon after with directions to the Plains of Abraham. Concert and city at night were magical. It's a nice walk from the hotel to this area.

I had booked two double beds, but we ended up in a small room with one double bed, so we asked at the desk if we could switch. The hotel was fully booked and the clerk brought up a cot for us. The room was small, but the ceiling was so high. Bathroom had been upgraded and had lots of hot water and good water pressure with nice toiletries. We were a little cramped in the room with the cot, but were so tired, we both slept like rocks. The night was quiet and peaceful.

I had prebooked breakfast and what a breakfast it was! The dining room is lovely and we had a full buffet breakfast with an assortment of delicious pastries, fresh fruit and juices and cheeses and a good selection of hot items. This was a meal to remember.
I would have thought that the bill would have been adjusted for the smaller room that we ended up with, but it was not and I was not in the mood to argue too much about it.

We hit the road refreshed and well fed. I would recommend this hotel to friends.

Thank you for your detailed review!

I am glad that you enjoyed the hotel, the restaurant, and Paul McCartney's concert ! Walking around the hotel is fantastic as you said.

Our chef was happy to hear that you enjoyed your breakfast. Next time, do not forget to stop by for lunch. We have a brand new menu creative and different from all the other restaurants in the city.

Hope to have you or your friends as our guest in a near future!

My wife and I took our granddaughter to Quebec City in July. We could not have ask for a more convenient hotel nor one of greater value. Located just two blocks from the Hotel La Frontenac and the heart of the old city. Rooms are a bit small but very clean. We were unable to get into our room before check in at 4 PM but they did store our luggage. The public parking garage is connected to the hotel.

We spent two nights at the Clarendon and loved it. The hotel is right in the centre of Old Quebec City and within walking distance to most sites.
The rooms are very small, but comfortable and very clean. The staff were very friendly and more than willing to talk in English as well as French.
I'd stay here again without hesitation.
