“Lovely place”
Reviewed 27 June 2014

We were nervous coming here due to some reviews but our room was lovely. It was incredibly spacious with a lovely stone feature wall (room 26 I think)

The location is brilliant, right near restaurants, bars, historical attractions etc and the staff are lovely. Be warned the reception is up a flight of stairs so if you have mobility issues pack light or try to find some assistance. Would definitely stay here again, we really enjoyed it.

Room Tip: Room 36 was spacious and nice but had zero view - this didn't bother us at all but may be import...

For my husband and myself, the location of this hotel directly on the Place d'Armes, opposite the Chateau Frontenac and the promenade was its greatest selling point. We had easy access to the upper old city, including Rue St. Jean with its profusion of restaurants, cafes and pubs, not to mention shops which hold little interest for us. We were entertained each night by a street musician playing skillfully near the hotel's restaurant. Our room was simple and uninspiring, but had a view across the square to the Chateau Frontenac. We missed such conveniences as coffee and tea making supplies, available nowhere in this hotel. We carry our own bags easily, but the staircases from the entrance to our room would be difficult for someone with mobility issues. The highlight of the room was the lovely spa shower, worth indulging in daily. We found breakfast at this hotel in its bistro restaurant a little on the pricey side, but in fact it was a generous and nicely served start to the day. The walk to the historic lower town was also easy, whether by stairs or down the streets, past a park with a panorama. Staff were helpful with parking details and directions, but didn't give us full instruction as to the method of paying for parking with our bill; this made checkout a little more cumbersome than necessary. All in all, we'd return to this establishment on another visit to beautiful, historic Quebec City.

Room Tip: We wondered if being in a room overlooking the square would bring lots of noise into the night, but...

I stayed a few days ago with my husband. The only positive is the location. As for the rest, it was bad. Choose another hotel.

Bedroom: It was very small. It did fit tightly a double bed and a desk and chair. The carpeting was old throughout the hotel. In our room, it was in poor condition in parts near the wall. It also had a nasty cleaning product smell, which gave me a headache.

Bathroom: Small, but functional. You could not turn on the light without a loud fan turning on. The towels had a strong bleach smell.

Bed: The bed itself was very, very firm. The floor would not be much harder; and the sheets were a bit on the rough side.

Parking: There's is none. You have to drive about 2 or 3 blocks away to get underground parking at an additional cost. Parking in front of the hotel to check in was also tricky. There is only about 4 spots and they are always taken.

All in all, I cannot conceive how it got a 3 star. There are much better choices.

The location of this hotel is what drew us to it. It is right by the Chateau Frontenac and at the beginning of a pedestrian area. The room was nice and was quite large as was the bathroom. It was icy and people were tracking in a lot of salt so I thought they could have vacuumed the stairway a little more often. They did make an error our room charge but corrected it when I provided the confirmation. The restaurant downstairs was very good and had many tempting dinner choices. All in all, we were happy with our stay.

We booked a "Comfort" room based on the description on the website and ended up in Room 23... which certainly doesn't "sport a view on Ste-Anne street and Fairmont Le Château Frontenac"... it sports a view of a kitchen extractor duct and a near vertical metal clad roof. When we pointed this out to the sullen young male on reception we were told "it's got a window and it opens" and that nothing could be done because the hotel was fully booked. The young lady receptionist we spoke to later in our stay was a little more apologetic but said that we had a wall to look out on... so that should be alright... It wasn't and it was rather like sleeping in a noisy vault (the kitchen extract was switched on at 6am so at least we were up early. The hallway and staircase were grubby and remained so throughout our stay and housekeeping was slapdash with equipment and supplies left in corridors. There must be better in Quebec. Not recommended.

Room Tip: Better rooms may be obtained at other hotels - avoid this one

Location matters! The location of this Hotel is just fantastic. Situated right in the middle of the old part of Quebec City with a nice view (upon request) to the famous Chateau Fontenac this place was a gem with a special atmosphere to us. All the things you want to see in Quebec are within walking distance and on ground floor there is a nice restaurant with local specialties where we’ve enjoyed breakfast and dinner. Parking is a few minutes away and costs Dollar 17.50 a night, which was ok for us.
The only thing that we didn't like, were the bed sheets. They were stiff and uncomfortable. Everything else was great and we would come back any time again.

Room Tip: Recommend to take the room with view to the Hotel Chateau Fonteanc

I'll keep this short- I was in Quebec City at a conference at the Fairmont across the square. I decided to book a room here because I've never really liked staying at Fairmont Hotels and the room here was half the price. I'm very glad that I did. My room was clean, nice and well appointed. The bed was comfortable, the staff were friendly and the restaurant downstairs had great food. I would certainly stay here again when visiting Quebec City, which is a beautiful place by the way. Highly recommended.
