“Decent place to stay in Old Quebec for cheap”
Reviewed 24 August 2012

This hotel was OK. Not great, not terrible. If you need a cheap place to stay in 'old' Quebec, this is it. Great location. We parked the car and didn't have to touch it for three days as we were able to walk everywhere. We needed a room last minute during peak season and there were very slim pickings. The rooms were clean and actually fairly large. Furniture and room decor was old and cheap but in good condition. No real common area other than the small lobby where you check in and a coffee maker. They do offer cheap on-site parking and a small continental breakfast for $3 or so. Nothing really wrong with the place if you're not looking for anything fancy, just don't expect a 'full service' B&B experience. The lady (owner?) we saw the first day was very nice & helpful. The younger man (her son?) wasn't the friendliest host. He'd answer our questions but didn't really seem like he wanted to be there. Decent pace overall for what it is.

A cheap place for a hotel within the walls. Easy to get to most things - Rue St-Jean and le Chateau Frontenac. Helpful service with good tips on where to go and what to see, would have missed the free Cirque du Soleil if it wasn't for their advice. Rooms are dated but have their own bathroom, the higher rooms can get warm as there are only fans, no elevator so may be tricky with heavy luggage. I would stay again.

Given the price range, one should not expect 5 star everything. Having said that, I have stayed at higher rated hotels/ b & b's which this places easily beats for service, facilities, and location.
I note the earlier bad reviews, and can report that most of the issues have been addressed.
The overly high expectations of some travellers cannot be addressed.
The breakfast was outstanding, as was the service and friendliness of the staff.
Will, and have already, recommend this place to others.

We were looking for a place to stay within the old city walls of Quebec City for a reasonable price. Luckily, we found Au Petit Hotel and it was absolutely perfect for our needs. The price for the room was very inexpensive. The room was simple, but we had our own bathroom and found everything to be very clean. The location was what really made this place great. Everything was within walking distance. We were pleasantly surprised to find a mini-fridge in our room so we could keep snacks. There was also a parking lot on site so we did not have to worry about our car. We found it a little tricky to find at first, so just make sure you have good directions. We would definitely stay here again!

We arrived late in the afternoon in Quebec not havinf any reservations, we drove around town trying to find a place in one of the hotels or B&B's suggested by our travelguide. Sine those places were all fully booked we just started te enter any hotel to ask if there were rooms available. Luckily this place had rooms available. The decoration is not really special, but is ha a nice old touch that goes well with the age of the building itself. Rooms were small but were kept very clean and the price was really cheap. I think we paid about $ 40 per night.

Room Tip: There are different kind of rooms in locatio and size. Just ask what is available

Very clean, comfy bed, friendly helpful staff. Perfect location - hotel is located in the heart of old Quebec City close to many restaurants. Access to microwave and kettle.

Sadly, I ignored the few negative reviews on this site because of the charming appeal of the photos of this hotel. The location turned out to be its only asset. However, about five hotels were adjacent, so any of those would have been better. We left after two nights for Hotel Bellevue which was leagues better.

Au Petit Hotel is not a hotel. It is not comfortable, and we did not have the basic necessities. It was more spartan than a hostel, a church lock-in, or even camping, in some regards. The beds were unbearably hard, and board-like, and the rooms dirty with dilapidated off-cast furniture without any style or thought. The upholstery was dirty. There were not enough blankets and the heat was too low in a cold October. We were not served any breakfast as advertised. The bath tub was about half the size of a small standard tub. The bathroom floor was very dirty. Dingy fluorescent light over a gold formica vanity and a gold formica headboard! made it worse. I have lived in the third world, traveled to Africa, stayed in hostels, and am willing to be flexible but we could not stomach this place. Staff were indifferent and hardly spoke to us. There is a language barrier as they do not speak French or English, and do not attempt to. There is no common room and no access to any food, ice, information or recommendations, logistics assistance with travel. Other hotels start at even just $113 per night. Save yourself our experience. Do not be lured by this curb appeal.
