Travelodge Hotel & Convention Center Quebec City

My wife and I had planned and researched this vacation trip very carefully before booking four nights at the Clarion Hotel, Ste Foy, Quebec.
We decided to drive to Quebec through our beautiful home state of Maine and cross the boarder into Quebec at Jackman, Maine. We waited in line for 51 minutes to pull up to the window and hand over our passports. The young woman had a very snotty attitude and when I told her we would be staying longer than 48 hours she had us pull around back and report to "Immigration." We thought the tight security was rather comforting in today's world, but, it would've been nice if they could've not been so terribly rude; they made us wait another 20 minutes while they stood around the coffee maker goofing off.
Day one was not starting off that well. We had wasted so much time at the boarder that we decided to drive straight to the hotel and get checked in.
The very first thing to hit us as we got out of the car was the horrid stench coming from the restraunt dumpster that was baking in the August heat. The dumpster had been hosed out and the effluence had puddled in hotel's parking area to form a sticky stenchous goo.
We had checked in and found the Hotel Clarion nothing like Travelocity's description. We had booked a king and we got two doubles, there was no room service, no mini bar, and no free breakfast. We were not minutes from Downtown Quebec City and the traffic nightmare in the area made our stay problematic. Quebec City has a severe traffic and parking problem. Get ready to spend big bucks for gas and parking.
As for the food. If you want good food at resoable prices do not go to Quebec.
Quebec City was a destination where you never feel as though you've gotten your money's worth.
The U.S. Customs agents who welcomed us back into Maine were friendly, outgoing, proffesional, and speedy. We were never so happy to get back home.

I arrived with a tour group, one of many to stay at the hotel. Luckily, our group had dinners elsewhere, because there's not much within short walking distance of the hotel. Breakfasts were downstairs and a buffet was available if you could work your way through all the tour crowd to get at it. The buffet was a little pricier than I'd expect, but people tell me that Quebec as a whole is pricier than the rest of Canada. Room was average hotel type; utilitarian. It gave me a chuckle to see that my room had the same 2 paintings that the Holiday Inn Midtown in Montreal had had. Desk help didn't handle English as well as I thought they might, and they didn't seem to put any effort in trying to help me with my request to find an ATM that actually dispensed money. (Note to US travelers: private-run ATMs won't recognize your card, and some bank-supported ones won't either. It was a BIG problem!) Elevator broke down for a day+ of our stay. They have 2 elevators, both of which are very slow even when working and interminable when only 1 was working. Most people gave up and used the stairs. Room rates seem to be on a par with what you get.

The sign at the entrance shows 4 stars, the online booking sites list this as 3 stars, but as far as the condition of the guest rooms, I would rate this a very run-down 1.5 star hotel. The lobby has been renovated and looks decent, but the hallways and guest rooms are old, drab, run-down and badly in need of renovation. This might have been a 3 star hotel 25 or 30 years ago, but it certainly isn't one now. If I had known in advance just how dumpy my room would be, I seriously would have slept in my car rather pay $100 per night to stay here. The only positive thing I can say is that the staff were friendly and helpful.

This place used to be nice as a Holiday Inn, but since it's become a Clarion the quality has really gone downhill...doors and hallways could use some new paint. However, it's still clean and nicely located if you want to go shopping at Place Laurier or Place Ste-Foy or clubbing at Ste Foy's amazing discotheques. It's also convenient for a night stopover as it's next to the major arteries of the city.
For $76 in late August, it was a good deal.

I have stay at many hotels, but this was the worst hotel I have every stayed at. The front desk clerks were very unprofessional. Our first room had no heat and it was extremely cold outside, when they moved us they moved us to a room that was over the Atrium where a very loud party was going on which lasted until midnight, you could not sleep if you wanted to. Then for breakfast, which was continental, there were no servers the room was nasty from the night before and the orange juice was frozen. I will never stay at that establishment again and will advise those I know not to either.
