“Friendly, comfortable, within the walls of the old City”
Reviewed 15 October 2011

I hope that I get to return to this hotel someday. Everyone at the front desk was cheerful and knew the city and the neighborhood. We felt as if we were truly welcome throughout our 2 day stay.
The hotel provides a written guide to a self-guided walking tour of Old Quebec - but if you want to be led around the area- a young man dressed as a member of Samuel Champlain's initial troop to Quebec takes guests on a easy morning ramble up to the Hotel Frontenac.
Free Wi-Fi! Tea kettle and tea! Lots of counterspace, desk, coffee table.
Excellent recommendations on restaurants in various price ranges and cuisines.
Bed comfortable, room very roomy. Newly upgraded rooms - quality work.
Quiet. The large salon/living room on the first floor has a library, a piano that is in tune, board games including a great chess set and comfy couches and chairs.
Close to the train station. Close to the cruise ship dock. Willing to let you check into a room in the morning.

You will not find a better location in all of Quebec City. This hotel has every everything going for it, from clean, quaint and relaxing accomodations to the perfect breakfast (in bed) to start your day. The staff is second to none, each one more willing to help than the other. At the end of each day I looked forward to picking out one of their many movies and settling in with their fresh made popcorn. I wouldn't even consider another hotel and would recommend this to the most astute traveler. We will be back for sure.

We chose this hotel because of its location in the old town and proximity to the rail station. It is a short up-hill cab ride from the station (+ 1 mile). Hotel is small, as are the rooms and bathrooms but the essentials are there but you don't want to spend a lot of time in the room. There is a first floor lobby with comfortable chairs and tables for a small gathering. Included breakfast is a basket with assorted breads, jam and sometimes meat, that is delivered to the room. Coffee maker is in each room. A walking tour of the old town is included in the warm weather months and was excellent for an over-view of what we wanted to visit later in our stay. The separate restaurant on first floor was very good--wide menu selection. We ate several meals there during our stay and each was special.

de Vieux location is perfect for walking around the city. The staff were friendly and helpful. They helped with directions and restaurant ideas. They steered us to a great pizza 3 doors away.
Our deluxe room was exactly that. No view, but it had everything else. King bed was comfortable. Pillows were just right. Room was very clean. Room included a big screen TV and a gas fireplace. There was a coffee maker and much to my wife's surprise and pleasure, a tea kettle and tea bags.
The bathroom was spotless. Cleanest I've been in for many moons. Nice adjustable shower head and plenty of towels.
A real nice place to stay. I would never stay anywhere else when in Quebec City.

After 5 nights here we were sad to have to leave. While we can probably afford the big chain hotels, we tend to choose these smaller boutique hotels for the personal service they tend to offer. L'Hotel du Vieux Quebec was no exception. The front desk staff were very accommodating, even booking a tour for us at 1 AM for the next day.

Breakfast being delivered was a time saver and money saver compared to having to eat at a restaurant, and the large size rooms made staying in quite pleasant. The wife hoarded the maple butter, and neither of us liked the bran muffins so much but the croissants were great--especially the ham and cheese ones we got one morning. We did eat at the attached restaurant for a late lunch, and had good service and a good meal.

The bathroom was ample size and the tub was huge. I'm 6-4 and took a bath the first night after the rigors of travel. I fit in the tub quite well, which is not always the case I can tell you. Way better than the showers in France with the lame half a door set-up and usually no tub. Big bed and a decent size flat screen TV as well. This was my first experience with the room key that you just wave at the lock instead of inserting, and it was so enlightened that I am certain it will be everywhere soon but it was neat that it was actually already in use at this little hotel. On the coffee, it was good to have in the room, but if you want it stronger just double up on the coffee filter packs and you'll be good to go.

I tried to imagine staying at the Frontenac, which had a huge, busy lobby teeming with tourists (like us). All the lobby seating was usually occupied and there seemed to be little chance for a truly personalized experience. On the other hand, the lounge in L'Hotel was ample and always offered seating and solitude. And if I forgot something in my room, up one flight of stairs above the front desk and I was back at my room without a lengthy wait for an elevator. And the front desk recognized me and my lame French. It was more like staying at a friend's place to the point you forget you are paying to be there. I can't recommend it enough, especially the location. Yes, it is uphill to most of the major points of interest, but guess what, it is downhill coming back!

Room Tip: First floor above the front desk was easy stairway access and no noise problems.

We spent 6 days in lovely Quebec City and stayed at this small hotel on the busy Rue St. Jean. Despite the bustling streets and traffic from the restaurant next door, our King Superior room on the third floor was very clean, comfortable, and quiet. The view from our room was not great (faced another building) but perhaps that's why it was so quiet. Staff was friendly and helpful. Lots of restaurants and shops nearby, only a 5 minute walk from the Chateau Frontenac and the boardwalk. For middle class folks like us, this hotel is a splurge price-wise but for a romantic getaway it was worth it. This is a green hotel, which means you won't find the little bottles of shampoo and lotion; instead, there are dispensers in the shower, which kept falling apart but that was OK to deal with. Comfortable common lounge on reception floor has notebooks of restaurant menus, books, and 2 computers. Fireplaces were not functional unfortunately. Has refrigerator. Overall, a great hotel and would recommend it to others who can afford it.

Room Tip: If a view is important to you, ask the hotel explicitly for one; some rooms don't have great vie...

My family (2 adults, 2 teens) spent 4 nights at this hotel and enjoyed it immensely. The staff was the friendliest I have ever encountered. There was even a free 1.5 hour walking tour. At night, a pianist played beautiful music in the lounge while we checked our email on free wifi and read. The rooms were clean, bathrooms spotless (but tiny). Sheets and pillows were very luxurious. I loved the location and we walked everywhere. The breakfast was in a wicker basket daily and included croissants, muffins, jams and fruits. Got a little boring by the 4th day but was still nice and free!! There is a coffee machine in the room which makes typically bad coffee, but there is a good coffee machine in the lobby for only about $1 per cup. All in all, I would higly recommend this hotel

Room Tip: We overlooked the main street and it was still a quiet night sleep !
